But seriously, this economy crisis is scaring me!

It's crazy how prices keep going up.Milk is already almost 5 bucks and cheese is high.I hate going to the grocery store now because everything is so expensive.

Uh yeah, the milk being 4 bucks a gallon is the thing I hate, but I can't get my daily chocolate intake without it, so I will keep buying. I'll probably cut out the non-essentials soon though.

Yea, I've noticed. Going to the store for one of each: loaf of bread, gallon of milk, dozen eggs, you are unlikely to escape paying any less than $10 for those staples. Luckily, I made a trip to the bread store a couple weeks ago, spent $10 and got enough bread to last 2 months. Wish we still had chickens chilling in the backyard, cuz the eggs are so much healthier, and obvs cheaper. Now, I gotta wait til I go to Sweetwater to have fresh eggs.

I'm curious about the end comment "This is bad news for our slowing economy, and is actually the largest jump in food prices since 1990". What was the food price jump in 1990? And what is it now? And I'm unclear if this jump is in reference to a jump for a year, or a month, or what. Does anyone know this information?

The last time we were in Sweetwater, 6 months ago, their milk was well over $5 a gallon. I guess the smaller the town the more they spike the prices, because you have to drive farther to get anything cheaper, or sometimes anything at all.

This makes me officially scared about the economy. I need cheese in my life, if prices keep going up, this will be one of the many sacrifices I am already making.

I don't really buy any of these foods, other than some Kellogg's cereals.

But it IS disconcerting...it makes me think that most other brands will do the same eventually too. And that stinks.

this is going to get out of hand. if the things that we need most are going to get more expensive - then we need to start making more money and i don't see that happening any time soon.

I'm a pretty big fan of "store brand" products for everyday eating. A local news channel in Minneapolis did a blind taste test of a local grocery chain's store brand versus the big name brands a few years ago. With the exception of Kraft Mac and Cheese, the store brands won every catagory! However, if I am entertaining, I will splurge on specialty items.

I heard on CNN that the price of wheat rising can be attributed to the fact that farmers are choosing to raise corn because they think it can be used for an alternative fuel.

I was wondering why the Super Bowl sales were so lame this year.

Ugh, because I was getting off so cheaply at the grocery store before now. It's literally costing about $130 every time that I go, and it doesn't last that long. Boo.

Gotta say that I can't wait for the farmer's markets to start up in Minnesota. The good local stuff "should" be cheaper since the Minneapolis/St. Paul markets only allow produce that has been grown within a 60 mile radius of the Twin Cities. Hope they don't jump on the greed bandwagon!

This is bad news. I already feel like I spend a small fortune each week on groceries. I am really going to have to keep an eye out for those supermarket promotions now!

Solution? Don't eat processed foods like Mac and Cheese and buy generic

No, I love dairy. Milk, cheese, cream cheese, sour cream, ice cream, whip cream, cream, cottage cheese, etc.

I agree with ashcwebb! I am already paying alot of money for groceries each week this is getting ridiculous.

Buy local and not processed food. It's not that hard for me to stay in the $50 range for 1 person a week and thats with fresh fish and produce. And cheese. Can't live without my cheese!

We already buy organic milk and eggs, so those prices are already over the top. I don't think this will affect us much, but I could be wrong. Oh yeah, and buying local is a good idea if you have that option. Here in Austin there isn't too much fresh produce, or fresh fish, or much of fresh anything,e except for okra.

If anything good can come out of this, maybe it is that people may start buying more fresh produce and less processed food. As for the dairy increase that just sucks. If anything you would hope that companies would start increasing the price on candy, soda, junk food and lowering the price on fruits, veggies and dairy. Why is it the food that is the worst for you is always the cheapest. Why should eating healthy be a luxury?
