In continuing celebration of the Lunar New Year, today's 'Wich of the Week hails from Vietnam, which kicked off the 15-day Tet celebration last week. Bánh mì sandwiches are like the Vietnamese version of a sub, and a delicious side effect of French colonization.

The best thing about bánh mì? They usually cost less than three bucks. But even if they weren't such a bargain, bánh mì would easily be one of my favorite sandwiches. For my latest San Francisco-bánh mì adventure, read more
Built on a fresh crispy French roll, bánh mì combines traditional Vietnamese flavors, such as cucumbers, carrots, cilantro, and hot peppers, with your choice of meat. Some of the most popular include barbecued chicken and pork meatball. The rolls are usually dressed with mayo, and the sweet marinade on the meat also acts as a condiment.
For years I've been going to Saigon Sandwich Shop in San Francisco's Tenderloin neighborhood — it actually made the best sandwiches in America list! — but last week I decided to try Baguette Express up the street. I ordered two sandwiches at around $2.50 and 10 inches apiece: the bánh mì ga (BBQ chicken, pictured above) and the bánh mì ca moi (sardine, below). I would highly recommend the sardines if you're into that sort of thing, while the chicken was some of the sweetest, moistest meat I've had on a sandwich.

I think I still like Saigon Sandwich more — its sandwiches are delightfully overstuffed — but the Baguette Express bread was better: crusty and delicious. If you're ever in SF, you should definitely stop by one of these hole-in-the-wall shops. If you can't make it to SF (or Vietnam), you can also get great bánh mì in Boston, New York, Philadelphia, LA, and most other major US cites.

Every culture has an awesome cheap sandwich. Tortas, bahn mi, blts, grilled cheese, droooool.
1My hubbie loves these!
2I love sandwiches. I wonder if I can order up an imitation Bahn Mi if I can't get the real thing.
3I second verily - in droolage and love of cheap sandwiches from all corners of the world. If there was any benefit from French colonialism it was in the uses made of the baguette! Senegal's sandwiche omlette combines scrambled eggs, spicy piment, ketchup, french fries in a french baguette. I still crave one of them and a cafe touba for breakfast sometimes.
4Gotta mention San Jose for Ban Mi. The real authentic ones are the the Ban Mi Thit, though they are all yummy. I remember when they were $1 each. My mom makes great roast chicken ones at home. She makes the home made version of the mayo...it's soooo good. If you're in SJ go to King Egg roll on Story Road. They have pretty good ban mi (which also means bread in vietnamese) but they also have cheap street type food you can find in Vietnam, but you can also get really goof Roast duck and my favorite is the Vietnamese ice coffee with condensed milk.
5I hate going to a Deli and spend $8 on some crappy turkey sandwich. Like at Cosi in DC. Sandwiches should not cost that much!
6I love this sandwich!!!!
7These are so outrageously delicious. I think the pickled veggies give the sandwich their signature flavor, well that and the bread is usually TDF. I too remember when you could get one of these sandwiches with a soda for $1.25. What comes close to that value... a Costco Hot Dog. Bah. One drawback... they smell, again the pickled veggies.
8SOOO yummi! I work in Oakland and get these sandwiches from time to time. There is a large Vietnamese community a few blocks back from Lake Merritt and most of them are great. I have either the grilled chicken or veggie. I will warn first timers to beware of the HOT pepper slices. For less than $3 they are fresh, healthy and tasty. I also hate the $8 small deli sandwich with bland taste...
9Bahn me up Scottie. Sounds tasty.
10So amazing. I almost went for Pho tonight too. I love vietnamese food.
11OMG!! I LOVE BANH MI THIT NUONG ( which is grilled pork)!!! They are the best for so cheap and they're easy to make if you have the time. I never thought I would ever see this make it to this website...I think that's fantastic!!
12I love Banh Mi. I wish there were ones in my neighborhood.
13Sounds kind of yum...
14I would love to try the chicken.
15that's kind of cool. i guess with all the flavors and veggies - it would be something that i might try as well
16looks wonderful!
17Try having one with a fried egg... really good.
18Anyone who lives in "The OC" is familiar with these sandwiches. Especially if you live near Little Saigon like me. There's a chain here that EVERYONE loves called Lee Sandwhich. I think they're a little overrated but whatever.
Next time you should do a little review on Pho...yummmm!
19These sandwiches are delish!
20I can't believe I'm seeing this sandwich!! I was introduced to them when I studied abroad in Paris by my French boyfriend. There were 4 places on his street that served these delicious sandwiches. The sandwiches served there always had mayonnaise, cilantro, carrots, cucumber, and hot pepper slices, then whichever meat you wanted. I always got the mysterious 'balls of chicken'. The meat was on what looked kind of like a kebob, and they would slide the meat off directly onto the sandwich. I've always wanted to make one but I'm not sure what kind of sauce the put on the chicken before they roasted it (I'm guessing..). Too bad I haven't seen any places selling these in Minnesota.
21mmm love these! I recently moved though and now I probably have to drive an hour just for a $3 sub.
