You've probably heard by now, but just in case, yesterday, the USDA recalled 143 million pounds of frozen beef. Yes, millions.
The largest beef recall in the US is occurring because Southern California based slaughterhouse Westland/Hallmark — the one that was recently shut down because of sick and mistreated animals — did not receive complete and proper inspections. Due to that fact, the Food Safety and Inspection Service has stated that the meat is unfit for human consumption.
The meat was sent to many federal school lunch programs, as well as several large fast-food chains. They estimate that 37 million pounds have already been consumed, and that no reported illnesses have occurred. The recall is more of a precaution since sick animals pose a higher risk of contamination.

I heard about this last night on the news...it made me thankful that I don't really eat red meat!
The news report that I saw also mentioned that this company mistreated the cows as well, which really disgusts me.
1see why I don't eat red meat
2another reason I'm happy that I don't eat the stuff.
3The video on the news (supplied by the Humane Society) of how the cows at this plant were being treated was heartbreaking.
4Let's see last time I had beef was...November. And that was kosher/halal organic beef- the only way to fly.
5WOW is all i have to say to this
6THAT is why i don't eat beef!
7Wow...
8THAT IS WHY
9you eat ---->NATURAL/ORGANIC!!!
i can't believe it, the amount ranges into the millions!
think of how many cows that is!
or how many mistreated cows
jeebus, horrible horrible..HORRIBLE!
ugh, they keep showing the clips of the cows being mistreated in our local news...i get so sad immediately and then i have to turn off the tv and hug my dog. animals shouldn't be treated like that.
10I work down the street from that meet plant. I would always see the cows being delivered if just the delivering conditions are heart breaking! My son and my niece and nephew are in schools where the meat was being delivered to it makes me very upset!
11Oh, wow. That's scary.
12Organic isnt safe either really. Remember that spinach recall? organic.
I get my beef from local growers only. I dont eat frozen prepackaged meat.
13So, this will affect the stuff you buy in the grocery store??
14good point caterpillar girl!
15UGh.... Just ugh. The thought of it all going to children makes me shiver. We're on the opposite coast, I wonder how I can find out if they serve my children's school
16Organic isn't enough, although it's better. When it comes to beef you want to eat hormone/ antibiotic free 100% grass fed/ pastured beef. If it's chicken you're looking for hormone/ antibiotic free plus free ranging/ cage free (not access to pasture which doesn't mean they actually get to the pasture or grass). Read the Omnivores Dilemma and In Defense of Food by Michael Pollan if you're interested in learning about what you're eating.
The spinach recall had to do with natural fertilizers being used... that's poop! Can't avoid that!
17I'm glad I didn't feed my family any beef this weekend!
18I don't do beef!
19I only eat chicken, turkey or seafood. Not that chicken or turkey can't get recalled either but at least I have nothing to worry about right now
How many cows died bcuz of this???...So horrifying. I saw on cnn how the cows were being forklifted to b killed...SO SAD.
20Read Skinny b*tch or Dominion. Condemned horse meat is known to be ground up and put into baby food.
21"... with an animal who pisses you off, you don't just kill it. You ... blow the windpipe, make it drown in its own blood, split its nose... I would cut its eye out... and this hog would just scream. One time I ... sliced off the end of a hog's nose. The hog went crazy, so I took a handful of salt brine and ground it into his nose. Now that hog really went nuts..."

yikes! i read fast food nation over christmas break; it's really scary because he says it takes several weeks/months before a recall can actually happen, so by then most of the meat has been eaten! i can't lie, i still eat meat, but not when i'm at the school dining hall -- it just looks sketchy.
22To all those who are saying how sad it is the way the cows are mistreated... do you still eat meat and buy animal products? Do you really believe that if cows are raised under "organic" standards that it is then okay to kill them for food? Truly, what is the difference? It just seems hypocritical to me, but that's just my two cents.
23I think I'm going to totally stop eating beef.
24Evereytime I see the footage on the news my heart hurts. I don't want that cow or any cow to die and be my dinner. How selfish of me. My husband and I have been debating this the last few days. I just can't eat beef and he insists I can't live on peanut butter and beans alone for protein. He says I'll get sick. I have some research to do.

26oatmeal_bliss, I do think that it's terrible and sad that these cows were mistreated. I eat beef, but I visited the farm that sells at my local farmer's market and saw that the cows were treated well there. I have no problem eating an animal, but I do want it to live the best possible life. Buy organic, buy local, make sure to do your research on who you buy from.
What I actually don't understand (and I'm not trying to be rude here, I just want to know) is why some posters say that they don't eat red meat, but I assume that they aren't vegetarians. What is the difference between a cow's life and a chicken's? Is it taste, not a treatment issue? I'm just really curious.
27i agree designergirl about doing your research. I'm veg but I'm not one who believes that everyone should stop eating it NOW. I don't think that's realistic, of course and I've met lots of v*g people who won't accept less.
28I'm happy with the exposure this is delivering (as disgusting and heartbreaking as it is to watch and face) and I'll be happy if it makes people stop and think to make even small changes in how they eat! Who knows, it could lead towards cutting out meat totally at some point...and it's a step in the right direction, IMHO.
if I can "recall" correctly, this slaughter house is in my city! =/...luckily I don't eat beef.
