A little while back, we wrote a post about saying goodbye to plain old table salt. Well, for those of you that are looking to do just that, you can now get an entire set of rare and worldly salts. The ultimate salt collection is a set of 12 full size Artisan jars containing the most unique and rare gourmet salts. In the collection you'll find gems such as Fluer de Sel (harvested from salt ponds in France), Flower of Bali (hand-harvested and very limited in quantity) and Alaea (traditional Hawaiian Sea Salt). However, gourmet salt is not cheap, the entire collection will set you back $138.50.

I'll stick with my $4.69 sea salt grinder from Costco.
1But do they have grey salt?
My mother asked me to find her some. (I have no clue why she asked me -- I'm a terrible cook. I guess she thinks that because I'm on the 'net a lot and I married a computer Geek, that we can find ANYTHING for her online. Not true.)
2^Grey salt is not difficult to find--any gourmet food store near you should have some.
That salt collection is incredibly over-priced. We have maybe 15 different types of salts and I doubt they cost that much...the priciest is probably the smoked, flaky salt from Ireland or something at $15. Fleur de sel is pretty cheap and ubiquitous, same with the red Hawaiian sea salt. I guess you pay for the packaging!
3I'm sort of a salt wh*re...I also have many different types. I wonder why a nonny mouse's mom is looking for grey salt...it has a lot of liquid in it...
4I need to start trying some of these salts. Who knew there was so many different kinds other than plain ol' white salt?
5I've heard of grey salt nad a couple others but need to learn more. Interesting!
I can't show this to my hubby - He is a salt wh*re too! Dam that food network - teaching him about salts!
6quick note- there are a few other sources for artisanal salts that are also really good. check out dididavisfood.com for a good range of both plain salt from around the world and salt blends (very cool- i actually cook now because of these). their collections are also a lot less expensive than the one mentioned (true samples instead of big jars). the other source for these is salttraders.com- this site has a lot of salt- and pepper, too. another quick note: once you have "real" salt, you cannot go back! it is so much better!
