I'm not sure why people feel the need to break Guinness World Records, but they do. And this time it was sixty Indian chefs in New Delhi. This past Saturday they cooked a 13 ton (28,600 pounds) biryani dish. That's right 13 TONS. It took three cranes and a huge steel vat mounted over a three-foot high furnace, but they managed to do it. The dish took 6600 pounds of rice, 187 pounds of chili peppers, 317 gallons of oil, 8045 pounds of vegetables and a "pinch" of salt weighing nearly 190 pounds.
A records manager from the Guinness Book was on hand to witness the cooking. Kaoru Ishikawa said:
I'm here to certify them for preparing the world's largest biryani weighing around 13,000 kilograms.
The weirdest thing, is that there is no current listing for largest biryani, so perhaps 13 tons might have been a bit of an overkill? Although the dish was then divided and sent to city orphanages, so at least in this case the food wasn't going to waste.

What I want to know is, does it smell really bad? Why are all of the chefs wearing little face masks?
1LOL partysugar that is funny. Its true! Why are they wearing the masks...I don't understand why they would need to make 13 tons either. weird. at least it was given to orphanages but does it taste good? it doesn't sound good?
2I am cooking a crock pot version of this as I type- very random as I rarely make it. 13 tons seems a bit overkill
I wonder if fumes from the chilli peppers could be the reason for the masks? I really have no idea.
3I am glad they are sending it to the orphanages and not wasting it. I want to know how they are getting it out of this big pot!
4Sorry, but this looks really gross. (And not because it's biryani.) I get grossed out when there is a vast amount of food in a vat. Something about it is wrong.
5I LOVE BIRYANI! I love indian food though..which is great because I work at an indian restaurant. I don't smell too good, but it's pricey and I made moneyy
6somehow i can't stop thinking about the bugs flying around and the other things floating into this. yuck.
7Why are they wearing haz-mat suits? Haha.
lickety split - that's a good point. Ew. :/
8GOOD LORD!
9WOW - maybe the masks are for cleanliness. I think breaking records is just to break records, why not. Let's have some fun in life and it went to the orphans, that's a good thing. I love Indian food it's so flavorful and I can't do it @ home. Anyone ever been to the Taj Mahal? I'm dying to go to India.
10I'm always timid to try out Indian food, but that is making me crave some nan and curry! I love ethnic food.
11Why is it that people instantly leap to the conclusion that because they are wearing masks that the food smells bad? And then they decided to feed this large vat of "smelly" food to orphans? Maybe they just wanted to be sanitary while leaning over a large vat of food. The whole comment seems a little ignorant....and disrespectful.
12Wow. They are wearing masks for 1. Cleanliness, and 2. The spices used to make the biryani are strong. The vapor from all those chiles can seriously hurt when you breathe them in.
13I agree with Haute. Good to know they didn't waste the food afterwards though.
14Ewwwwwwwwwwww.
