Want to roast your own coffee beans, but don't want to splurge big bucks on a home coffee roaster? Then try using a hot-air popcorn popper. Sweet Maria's has a full how to, and the folks at KK just put it to the test.
You order unroasted green beans, and put them in the popper like you would popcorn. As the beans roast (they're not going to pop like the popcorn does), the bean casings separate. The skins will float up and make a big mess. However, after a few minutes, you'll have wonderfully roasted beans — they'll need to be cooled, but you can use them like you would normal.
At least, this is how it works in theory. I personally haven't tried it, and I don't have an air-popper at the moment. But I might just have to go out and get one. How about you? Would you try to roast your coffee beans this way?

This is interesting and I hope my youngest nephew doesn't see this.
I love my hot air popcorn popper and I hate to see it ruined or burnt out because he tried this. Plus after this would the oil released by the coffee beans still be in the machine? Then when you crank up the popper to make popcorn you get coffee flavored popcorn. Which for me would be yucky.
Maybe I'll just buy the kid his own machine for his dorm room so he doesn't ruin mine.
1i agree. i would think the machine would forever smell of coffee, no?
2i think it would make sense if it was a big savings...
3I'd be worried about the oil from the beans, at some point, posing the risk for a fire. Gotta pass on this one. Nope. Nada.
4couldn't you just roast them in the oven, turning them every half hour or so? there's oil in chicken and it doesn't make a fire in the oven...
5haha... you can also make ramen noodles in a coffee pot. Just put the noodles in the bottom and let hot water run through - without the coffee.
6My brother does this. But he also never makes popcorn anymore in the popcorn popper because it definitely smells like coffee.
7I never would've thought of this idea...I never roast my coffee, though.
8This definitely encourages me to purchase a separate popcorn popper specifically for roasting coffee, as I've looked into coffee roasters and they are far outside my budget. Now I need to go price green coffee beans...
9My dad roast coffee beans in a sort of metal barrel he made up, and uses the bbq. I'm sure this would be easier for him to use, but would probably take all the fun away..
10I wouldn't want to do this...
11Not sure I'd like to waste the beans on that but would buy a coffe roaster. Save the popper for Hockey!!!
