In case you haven't heard, "real" frozen yogurt is all the rage now. In fact it's so hot that there's not one, but two franchises that cater to the new trend. FitSugar wrote about the differences between the two celebrity hotspots, and it seems like Kirsten Dunst prefers pinkberry. I found this photo of her keeping cool with pinkberry this past October.

So, what's the big deal with pinkberry and why does everyone love it? Unfortunately I don't live in LA or New York (where their franchises can be found), so I have yet to taste it. However, since I knew you guys would be interested, I sent my YumSugar undercover reporter (aka my brother) out to do some investigating.
To read what he had to say and see more pictures of pinkberry, read more
First of all, pinkberry only comes in two flavors: original and green tea. My brother, who has a pretty good palate, says that the green tea was terrible and sour and the original is "less terrible and less sour, but still terrible and sour." It was after his first taste test that he realized it was made with live yogurt (like the kind you have for breakfast) and so he decided to try and not compare it to other frozen yogurts. He said it was decent, however he wasn't sure that the sour flavor made up for the health benefits.
"I ordered the medium with 3 toppings: Coconut, Chocolate Chips, and Granola.
I don't know how anyone would ever be able to muscle down pinkberry without any toppings but I guess it is possible.
Overall the combination I picked was semi-ok. The sweetness battled the sour yogurt, but still the sour prevailed. I cannot begin to imagine what the green tea would have been like.
With fruit it would have been excellent. It would probably be like a parfait that way."
Hrrm.. doesn't sound so promising. And yet I'm still intrigued. Even if it is another overrated trend (complete with celebrity endorsements), I'd still like to try it for myself. I think that the sour factor might be a love it or hate it sort of thing. Looks like I'll just have to muster up a visit to LA to find out for myself.

So, it's neither pink nor made with berries? Disappointing!
1Hmmm.....intriguing. Sounds like it's not very tasty, but if I am in LA, I might have to try it.
2and we should buy it because????
ha ha
3The first time I had it, I was like, "ewwwwww." It was sour and I had no idea why any sane person would shell out $5 for sour yogurt.
But then I had it again (and again, and again), and the sour went away. I go there almost every day...I am obsessed.
4Pinkberry is nothing but another Humphreys or Pengins yogurt!
I like sour and sweet yogurt, but 5 bucks for sour plain yogurt with marginal amounts of toppings scattered about? AND they don't even blend the topping in?! No thank you.
For a better alternative, head to Robeks Juice and order the frozen yogurt with your favorite fruit blend. Only 250 calories, 0 fat, 10g protein, 58g carbs (the good kind from fruit). That's $3.95 well spent! www.robeks.com

5i probably wont get to try it any time soon (and by tt i mean years) but i think like many other things, its an acquired taste? im weird, so i think i would actually like it
6My first comment. And its about food. Go figure.
.. Let's get to the heart of it. I keep reading the "sour" comment. Well, has anyone had REAL PLAIN YOGHURT lately? Yeah, it's kinda sour! ... We're just all so used to that sweetened frozen yoghurt out there that TCBY likes to push.
Pinkberry is exactly that, REAL FROZEN YOGHURT. So if you can handle that.. it's delicious! Have it with fruit topping. SO REFRESHING! And the servings are pretty big, so you can share.
Don't get me wrong.. I love a raspberry frozen yogurt (slightly tart) with some choco chips on it. But it's almost $3 for a smallish cup.. and PInkberry is far healthier.
7Wow. How do you get financing for a yogurt store with only two stinking flavors?
8i am so obsessed. you really have to taste it to appreciate how AMAZING it is.

10WOW - i can't wait to get my hands on this one!!

11Last October a friend of mine dragged me to it after dinner and I politely declined. But yesterday we had family in town who like to eat healthy and we were in the area, so I suggested it. The line was out the door and we waited forever. I got original yogurt with strawberries, raspberries, and chocolate chips. I ended up eating all the fruit out of it and passing it to my boyfriend, who didn't get much further. I guess it's an acquired taste, but I'm just not a fan of sour things.
12I hate, hate, HATE Pinkberry! It's a virus that's infected L.A.!!! Pinkberry is sour, disgusting, overpriced and nothing more than a trend. If you like the way sour old yogurt tastes, then by all means, go. Make sure to mask the nastiness with some fruit. I for one wanted to vomit the first time I tried it (and the second time too - mind you, I only took one spoonful before I gagged, and I gave both flavors a try at the request of my very obsessed sister and friends). One word: GROSS.
13there's a similar place in vegas called golden spoon, its really good and there are more flavors fo frozen yogurt
14This is definitely an acquired taste. And I really do mean ACQUIRED. I have been there a few times (I don't live in LA) and each time, it gets a little bit better, but not by much. Sure, the health benefits are there, but I would much rather enjoy less of something I really like than scarf down one of their cups.
It's not bad, but it's not my first choice of refreshment either. Instead, I would opt for a Match Green Tea from Jamba Juice--something that actually tastes like Green Tea.
15And I do not think you can compare Golden Spoon to Pinkberry! Golden Spoon is actually ENJOYABLE and is much more appeasing to the pallet :]
16Good point kscincotta. Kinda like those old SNL skits with Mike Meyers, "Coffee Talk". "Talk amonst yourselves. I'll give you a topic. Pink Berry, its neither pink, nor has berries. Discuss."
So if stuff is really just frozen yogurt, they owe me money because I've been throwing my Yoplait in the freezer for years.
"Party like a rock star, pound like a porn star, play like an all star!"
17great, kirsten does it now everyone will!
18I really wanted to like Pinkberry, but the sourness of the original flavor really turned me off. Perhaps the green tea is better, but I can't imagine trying Pinkberry again.
19I got a kick out of the fact that you used your brother for reconnaissance work. I too use my sibs in NYC & LA to check out hot spots. I'm not a big fan of plain unfrozen yogurt so I'll stick with TCBY.
20I'm interested!
21paris had it with pineapple the other day and it looked delicious! they are building one out by me later in the year- cant wait to try it!
22It's delicious -- at least the one I always get. They just opened one up in Pasadena. Anyway, my favorite toppings are blueberries, raspberries, and mango. I've never tried it, but I don't think I'd like other toppings like chocolate chips or Cap'n Crunch. i think it's better if you just stick to fruit toppings.
In any case, it's yummy and guilt-free (only about 25 cals i think). The only thing is the price. A bit steep if you ask me.
23I HATE Pinkberry. I personally think that people go there b/c it's trendy, not b/c it's good.
AND...I agree 100% with gummiebearz's comment above...You cannot compare Golden Spoon to Pinkberry. While Golden Spoon is sweet, creamy, and delicious, Pinkberry is disgusting, icy, and sour.
If you want something in between Golden Spoon and Pinkberry, try Yogurt Land. At least there, while the texture is still somewhat icy, there are more flavors....
24I have had it twice. Its actually very good, some people hate it, others love it. But the price makes me almost not want it.
25So I was in NYC this week, and went to Pinkberry twice! I had the original topped with pineapple, coconut, and strawberries and I have to say that I really, really like it! It's a unique flavor and is very tart, but I think that mixing it with sweet fresh fruit really out the flavors of the yogurt itself.
I'd be completely hooked, but since I'm now back in the midwest we'll see if I'm able to have it again. I can see why some people might not be wild about it (I've got an addiction with anything sour), but I'd recommend you try it at least once if you get the chance!
26omg pinkberry is the best thing in the world! the first time i tried it i thought it was kinda strange and sour but the second time i had it, i fell in love! i am now addicted and go at least once a week. I like to get the original with captain crunch and strawberries - its delicious!
27pinkberry is pretty much the best thing i have ever tasted.and people that think ewww or is gross is because its healthy and not loaded with tons of artifcial flavor and crap. its actually good for you to
i know if i lived in l.a. i would be there at least once a
week
28:]
omg pinkberry is DELICIOUS!! i am seriously obsessed i get it everytime i go to LA, everyday, sometimes even twice a day! and my friend and i saw maria shriver there too!
