I'm about to admit something absolutely dorky: I love grocery stores. I love walking through the aisles and checking out all the different products. In fact, whenever I travel I always end up popping into the grocery stores. In England, one of the biggest chains is called Tesco, and I've always been surprised how they seem to be everywhere except America. Well, turns out us Americans won't be Tesco-less for much longer. Starting sometime this year, the Tesco company is opening up stores under the name "Fresh and Easy." These store are going to be closer in size to Trader Joe's than they are to Safeway, and are supposedly catering to time-pressed and health-conscious shoppers. And before all of you Anglophiles get too excited, I hear that they'll have Tesco branded items and standard American products, but won't be importing a bunch of British items.
The first store is probably going to be in Phoenix, but Tesco is also looking at Las Vegas, LA and San Diego. Learn more about the Fresh and Easy Tesco stores.

Hmm. What strange news.
As an American currently living and studying in the UK, I am familiar with Tesco. Let's just say I only shop there if it's my only option and I'm unable to make it anywhere else.
The fruit and vegetables spoil within one to two days after I purchase them. And I mean they go dark brown. Disgusting. Their organic food is okay, but horribly overpriced.
Also, the clothing section is akin to Wal-Mart--they even sell the Cherokee brand. Now that I think of it, Tesco is basically like Wal-Mart, but British.
I'd personally stick with Trader Joes, Whole Foods, or even Publix. Unless, that is, the American version is drastically different from its British origins. Just my thoughts...

2I go to the supermarket anywhere I travel through, too. I just love them!
3I totally forgot that Tesco is the one that's like Wal-Mart (I lived closer to a Sainsbury's), it's going to be interesting to see how their "fresh & easy" markets turn out. Everything I've read makes it seem like they're going to go down the "healthy" marketing plan, I guess only time will tell...
4I'm looking forward to checking them out. I went to Scotland to visit a friend last June and we shopped at a Tesco. I thought the quality of the food was really good (but just for being in Scotland I was happy all over!)
5I'm a Brit living in the States and would die for some good ole British food. The article says they are not having much imported food so why bother coming over.
