I'm a huge pet lover and even though I'll eat just about anything, I'm pretty positive I couldn't knowingly order up dog. However if the Seoul city government has its way, dogmeat could be reclassified as livestock and will legally appear on menus in South Korea. Right now it appears illegally and there are no hygiene regulations regarding slaughter. So tell me, could you ever order dog?

Not only would I NEVER eat dog, Im horrified by this picture. Maybe if it was behind a link like "click to read more" it would have been better, because then I would have had a choice to click or not.
And I wouldnt have.
Thats goddamned horrible, and just sad. Maybe over in Seoul, seeing this picture is the norm, but its not here and Im just upset by it.
1No dog gone way.
2No.
I know it's such a double standard, since I eat plenty of other meat, but just...no. I don't even have a rational justification for why I would refuse to eat dog but not other meats. I just won't.
3absolutely not. and the picture is really horrible.
4Sure why not. My dad ate alot of dog when he was in vietnam, said it was really good, alot of villagers couldnt live without it. My neighbors dog would be really tasty, and it would bring me some peace and quiet thats for sure.
5This is beyond revolting and wrong. In this country and culture- dogs are treated as family, not food!!
6OMG! I don't know about anyone else but coming onto this page and the first thing I see is that has been a bit traumatizing and I am Chinese...but I have never actually wanted to see how they are cooked and now I have that image in my head. YumSugar..you might want to reconsider this picture choice..people will be upset by it.
Besides that...I would never ever eat dog. I guess for me..I couldn't eat anything that was a pet to me. So yes..if I had chickens as pets, I would not eat them.
7I would have rather not seen that disturbing picture...and with no warning, thanks....
8Well, a person's idea as to what a pet is varies greatly from country to country. We're strange to a lot of countries because we keep rodents as pets. And consider that we eat cow, cow that is considered Holy to millions of Hindu's across the world.
So I give this one a "when in rome" vote. if i was in a situation where it was perfectly culturally acceptable and i knew the animal hadn't been mistreated, i'd give it a try.
9whoa, that was traumatizing. i know it happens all over the world, but i couldn't eat it. i guess i know how vegans and the like might feel when they see a roasted pig.
10Absolutely not. But this is one reason I went veg, I cannot stand the thought of eating any animal. I lived in China before--and I know that's the big joke, but honestly, I never saw it and all the Chinese people I talked about it with said they would never eat it. Maybe they were lying to me, but I don't think it's that important to Asian cultures.
11p.s. i thought the picture was fake, or of a plastic dog or something. and i agree, if it's real, eeeew.
there was nothing else you could use to illustrate your point, yum?
12Horrid Picture!
13No! No! No!
I need to go hug my dog now.
if that's a real dog, oh man, i'm traumatized. i thought it was a plastic dog.
anyhow, i have tried dog meat before, but i was 5 or 6, and my aunt didn't tell me what it was.
having said that, i definitely would NOT eat it now, if i knew what it was.
14For some reason, I cant see my reply to this post - Im just hoping that this picture comes down soon.
I hate it.
Its so sad.
15For lords sake Yum decided to be controversial and the whole place blows up, so its not PC or kind to the eyes, its a valid question since alot of countries have been eating dogs for centuries and its part of thier culture and heritage.
16That picture is seriously going to make me reconsider coming to this site. Poor, poor judgment.
17I agree with everybody else that picture is very traumatizing!! Please tell me it's not real?? I would never it dog meat not knowingly because any body that has eaten tacos in TJ can't be 100% sure..
18I think it should be removed...sorry but some of us have dogs that look just like that one and it is upsetting
19Yeah, I'm really put off by this picture as well, though I do understand the point she's trying to make.
I'm still really horrified, and I hope pictures like this aren't the norm to be posted up here, even for controversy's sake.
20as a vegan, no i would not. i'm pretty annoyed by the picture. you wouldn't post a picture of a dead cow like, that, would you? i get that is's all for shock value but i'm pretty sure i'm not coming back to this website.
not only am i really sensitive to stuff like this, my four year old was sitting next to me. you ought to be ashamed, really.
21bad choice of the picture. something like that should be AFTER a jump (if at all) and with a warning.
22I feel a little sick after seeing that picture!
23actually, I think it's a great picture to have up there. Eating a dog is no different than eating a cow, pig, or chicken. People don't like to face the fact that what they are eating was alive and probably very cute. Face it, the meat industry is not pretty. You can get all defensive about this picture if you want, but if you eat meat, you are being totally hypocritical.
24I completely agree that the picture was uncalled for and there should have been a warning. I expect to see such pictures on the PETA websites and other similar websites but it's so they can educate you on what really happens to animals in slaughter houses, etc.... I don't come to YumSugar for the same education... I come to YumSugar for fun.
25If you died and your dog was starving they would eat you
26That is called life
27Ugh that picture is disgusting, nauseating and sad. There is no way I would ever eat any Dog or Cat meat, like ElleJay said, (over here at least)pets are family NOT food.
28I guess I'm in the minority on this one, but the picture itself didn't upset me that much. Yes, it's disturbing, but it sure does make a clear point.
29I also agree that it is a bit hypocritical to complain about a picture if you're a meat eater, but I don't like to see dead cows or chickens any more than a dead dog.
Quick question for everyone: Did anyone see the episode of Anthony Bourdain's "No Reservations" when he went to Argentina? He had to watch Mother Cows get separated from their babies and he had to watch a bull get castrated... which I'm sure was very uncomfortable but I found it strange that he kinda freaked out when he's 1. a chef, 2. a proud carnivore and 3. he had just got done consuming a lot of red meat at a huge Argentinian barbecue. I don't know, it's weird to me... I'm a meat eater but find it amusing when meat eaters get so bent out of shape when faced with the reality of what their dinner was before it reached their plate.
30Absolutely not, and that picture is horrible.
31Was that picture REALLY necessary??? Seriously, this just ruined my day. I wish I could un-see that. I don't mind discussion of this and other serious issues on Sugar, but gross-out imagery is not something I expect or want from this site!!!
32ughh please take that picture down, I can't come to this site and have to scroll by it!!!!
33I would post a cow, pig or other meat product looking like that Ylatan. doesnt bother me.
why should yumsugar be ashamed because your four year old saw that picture? this isnt a childs website.
34Okay everyone, I'm really sorry that you were offended by the picture, it was not my intention at all. It was a photo from Getty News about South Korean dog restaurants.
We post these Would You Eat These stories not to be shocking, but to be informative. What is taboo and weird to one culture, is totally fine in another. We just want to let you know about it and learn how you feel about it.
I realize that perhaps it was a bit too graphic for the lunchtime hour and so we've replaced it. Sorry if anyone was offended. I do appreciate the feedback though.
35i saw the picture- i don't see what the huge deal is. i think people need to relax a little bit. yeah, it's sad, but seriously, it's no different than a chicken or a cow- in fact, many studies have shown that chickens are a lot more intelligent than dogs so- unless you're a vegetarian, i don't think you should freak out about the picture.
36Absolutely NOT! NO WAY!!!!!
37Never ever...
38I wouldn't eat dog meat simply because I treat dogs as pets, not because I believe it is wrong. I do believe that any livestock should be treated as humanely as possible, and anything prepared for consumption should be done so under sanitary conditions. I don't think I'd eat anything illegal...
39it is hypocritical to say "I would never eat dog" and then go and eat pig, or cow, or other animals (lamb? veal?). They all live, feel pain, and are killed brutally for meat. Just because one is more commonly eaten as meat here doesn't mean it's morally wrong to eat another one somewhere else.
That being said, I would have a tough time eating dog unless I was in dire straits -- but then watch out Rover! It's all just conditioning I guess.
40NO!!! NEVER!!! I could never ever do that.
41I'd eat it. I wouldn't order it for myself, but if I were at someone's home or at a dinner banquet, I would try a bit.
Additionally, the dogs used for consumption aren't somebody's family pets. They're animals raised for consumption, much like cows, pigs, chickens, etc. So you wouldn't be eating a family pet, just "livestock".
42thanks for changing the pic...now i don't have to shield my pups eyes from the screen.
43The idea of dogs being pets or family is so ingrained in western culture. I personally wouldn't eat dog, but who's to say I wouldn't if I was Korean or some other nationality who considered them livestock? In India, the cow is considered sacred and is not eaten, but in America it's beef beef beef all the time. It's all about how and where you were raised.
44I would never eat it knowingly. As much as I hate to say this, I seriously am very picky about chinese food because of this. There was a huge ordel a couple years back, one of the chinese food places near me got in trouble because they were caught catching birds and they had them in their restaurant. So..............never know, may have eaten it without knowing.
45Not just NO BUT HELL NO!!!!!!!!
46I'm a vegetarian and i don't get that people can eat cows but not a dog. Whats the difference? Its all animal flesh.
47The point of that picture is to be disturbing! It's the real world, this sh*t is happening! People want to pretend that disgusting, vile acts of cruelty aren't happening when in fact, THEY ARE. And yes, I am a vegetarian and I'm not afraid to say what I believe in. If you want to mock me and say I'm some zealot and too biased to have any real pull in the world, think about your children. Would you let this happen to them? Because to me, my dogs are my children, seeing as how I physically cannot carry any of my own. So stop complaining about seeing a picture that you didn't like and realize that this is a real problem and it hurts many of us to see, but we need to be educated.
48I wonder what dog would be the tastiest, i would guess those portly little squatty ones....greyhounds would be too sinewy, and the toy breeds just wouldnt be worth the frying oil.......oh i am going to hell.....
49this is just terrible! it's 2008 and South Korea isn't exactly a developing country, so wtf...vietnam is definitely a much more impoverished country, and I know that dogs are eaten there by people simply because there isn't really anything else and they're starving...but i just can't understand this for a country that isn't struggling in the same way...plus, maybe it's just me, but I'd think that they would want to distance themselves as far away from that stereotype of "dog-eaters"...
