Whenever my dad would make grilled cheese sandwiches, he would always end up coating the top of his with grape jelly. As a kid, I copied him and have grown up enjoying the delicious pairing of sweet and savory. It may sound weird, but a lot of folks use fig spread and it's not much different than that. Last night I ended up having a simple one with raspberry-peach jam, and thought it was an extremely flavorful pairing. So tell me, would you eat this grilled cheese sandwich?

S***r
L.a.p.a.

That's how we served it at the café I used to work at. Not my favorite though. My husband and I (wow, it feels weird to say husband) sometimes add a fried egg and some ketchup on top.
1I recently made a fontina and fig jam gcs that was to die for!
2Interesting combo - I've never considered adding jelly on top, but I will now.
3I've actually never heard of that, but it does sound pretty good!
4Fig or apricot jam is good with melted brie and ham.
5Not thanks- I am ALLL set with that. But then again, no one would think a peanut butter, mayo and olive sandwich would be good either? haha
6At first i thought NO WAY GROSS!!! but when i was young, i would sometimes have toast with mozzarella and jam. the cheese wasnt melted because it wasnt a grilled cheese, it was just toasted bread... i havent had that in YEARS... but i guess this would be good after all.
7i've tried this once...it certainly gives a different taste:D which is not for me...
8i use Lingonberry, being norwegian
9I love grilled cheeses with fruit or jam!
Brie with anything is yummy! I like apple chutney or white grape preserves.
10Honeyed goat cheese with pears... mmmm.
Cream cheese and banana!
Cheddar and apple.
So yummy! I don't usually eat it on top though. I peel back a slice of the bread and put the jelly inside.
11it's awesome.. i love block cheddar with strawberry preserves...soooooo gooey and delicious!
12I'm willing to try it, but I would never think of doing it on my own!
13Why not? It depends on the cheese though. I think raspberry with the right cheese would be yummy.
14Sure, sounds good!
15nope - no jam for me. although i do put ketchup on the plate to dip - kind of like a cheeseburger w/o the meat (yay vegetarianism)
16the only sandwiches I will eat jam or preserves on are PB&J or a Monte Cristo.
17I would probably try it, though it does sound strange--it reminds me of how my dad would always eat bacon & strawberry jelly sandwiches on toast when I was little, and I ended up loving the same combination.
18I was thinking, probably not, but I'd give it a try.
Then I read CiaoBella's post
and remembered how yummy apricot preserves are with brie--I love that combo in puff pastry!
I'm convinced, now.
19Lisabarn--Fontina and fig sounds good too
Mu husband made this for hiself when I was out one day after seeing it on Ham on the Street. I think he used swiss and strawberry jam...he said it was great!
20i eat rasberry jame with a monte cristo so why not? sounds kinda tasty!
21I got admit, I never thought about it, but thats a very convincing picture.
22No
23Yes, I love grape jelly on grilled cheese!
24Mmmm, I love jam and grilled cheese.
Everything taratootie said sounds good- cheddar with green apple slices is one of my faves, actually!
But I think my absolute favorite combo, to this point, has been blackberry jam with mozzarella or provolone.
25I think I'd use onion jam with grilled cheese. Does that combination count though? Since onions are usually savory...
26NO jamm way.
27I think a good cheese and fruit preserve pairing would taste amazing.
28sure, I would try it..it sounds good
29Mm, I think it'd be especially good with sour cherry jam or cranberry jam and brie. Mmm mmm!!!
30I'm with taratootie & Rigatoni - hubby turned me on to this 25 years ago. YUMMY!
31I've never considered that before. It sounds like it would be good, though. Will definitely have to try!
32I don't like jelly...but if I did, I'd try it!
33It'd be nice with Chili Jam.
34I love sweet/savory combos! One of my favorite quick breakfasts at home is a piece of toast with jelly and a fried egg on top. Yummmm....
35OK, this is like the fattest thing ever. But has anyone tried the "Monte Cristo" from Bennigan's?
It's a fried ham and turkey sandwich served with powdered sugar and raspberry jam?
It's so good, but I can only eat it once a year since it's huge, battered and deep fried. That why me and my sister call it the "Monte CRISCO"
36I think with the right cheese/jam combo, this would be amazing. My best friend makes a great appetizer by spreading jam over a wheel of brie, covering it in crescent roll dough, and then baking it. its amazing! I also looooooove to eat salty cheese (like cheddar or feta) with juicy sweet fruits (like pears or watermelon) so combining these flavors into a sandwich sounds great to me!
37Maryanabananas- That sounds like brie en croute... and it IS very very delicious!
38Ooh! I've got a spicy-sweet red pepper jelly that would probably taste great on a grilled fontina sandwich!
39I love the combination of sweet and savory- I love sweet with EVERYTHING! I'm not really a cheese fan, but this sounds yummy. I'd definitely use all-fruit spread instead of jam or jelly though.
40i put splenda on mine - i like them sweet
41Maybe. I would have to be in a mood for trying new food combinations. Sometimes I just want something I already know is good, rather than expiermenting, lol.
42Try dipping your grill cheese in ketchup, it's killer!
43yum..!
44That's a good picture! I would try it at least once. It doesn't sound too terrible.
45They have jam and cheese panini's at my college, which are yummy. I love trying interesting combination sandwiches.
46I'm a HUGE fan of peanut butter on my grilled cheese and bet the jam/jelly would be good, especially if you used a slightly salty cheese to compliment the sweet spread. Mmmm, now I'm hungry...
47I love Fig or Strawberry preserves with my grilled cheese. I typically use white cheddar, brie, or gruyere cheese on sourdough bread. It's so yummy! And it reminds me of Paris.
48I think that sounds kind of good, surprisingly.
49well i love brie and raspberry preserves together, so this seems like a natural pairing to me! plus, i'll try most anything once
