In addition to being grilled cheese day, this Sunday is also National Red Licorice Day. To help us celebrate, the folks at Red Vines recently sent us a care package of various flavors. The Sugar HQ is actually full of die-hard Twizzler fans, so I decided to see what they thought of my fave Red Vines. I took the three Red Vine flavors — pink strawberry, red cherry and original — and strawberry Twizzlers and put them into unmarked bowls.
I then asked folks to come taste them, and rank them from fave to least fave. With 21 taste testers, the results were more or less split down the middle. However there were a few surprises with the Red Vines strawberry option. To see what happened in our oh-so-scientific taste-test, read more.
To begin, the votes were broken down as follows:
9 for original Red Vines
7 for strawberry Twizzlers
4 for red cherry Red Vines
2 for pink strawberry Red Vines
While this wasn't that interesting — nearly split down the middle like I expected — the surprising part was in the comments. Overall, we decided that Twizzlers have a plastic texture, while Red Vines have a rubbery texture. We also learned that if you were a Red Vines fan, then you ranked Twizzlers last, and vice versa. It was the difference in texture that seemed to be what people used as a ranker. Those who grew up with Twizzlers thought it tasted "more authentic" while Red Vines people thought their choice was the real deal.
The intriguing part came from the two die-hard Twizzler fans who ranked strawberry Red Vines as favorite. They thought the flavor was great — I thought the two were really close in flavor — and wondered how they could swap their loyalty so easily.
To follow up on this, I did a blind-taste test with a few other folks. They agreed that the flavor of the two were quite similar. Yet I was surprised that it received such few votes. Turns out it was the bright pink Barbie color that really threw everyone off. Folks told me they thought it should taste like Starburst, or something "tropical" and a few folks even swore it had to be pink lemonade.
In the end, it really comes down to texture, flavor and what you grew up with. What do you think? Have you ever forced yourself to do a licorice taste test? Do you think your results would change?

Strawberry Twizzlers!
1I grew up eating Twizzlers and have never had Red Vines. I think I'll give them a try.
2Never heard of red vines before. Are they available on the East Coast?
3of course red vines is #1. they are just delicious
4i'm a twizzler girl...i've tried red vines and it might be the texture or the flavors...but they just aren't my thing. great research study there though...i wish that we had opportunities like that at work.
5GO Red Vines!!!
6I'm from the East Coast and grew up with Twizzlers, which are my fave. My best friend, from the West Coast, introduced me to Red Vines, which are okay, but I find them dry and hard to chew, and they make my throat hurt. At the end of the day, I'm still in the Twizzler camp.
7Red vines are the best.
8I've never had Red Vines, and grew up with Twizzler. I have to say my favorite is not the traditional licorice, but the Twizzler pull-n-peel. I like how soft and spaghetti like it is.
9Red Vines are TROUBLE for me. I love them. I grew up eating Twizzlers but then in college a friend introduced me to the Vines and I haven't gone back. I agree, I definitely think I like them better because of the texture. I'd rather eat wax than plastic.
10Red Vines, All the way. I love getting the giant tub
11i love them ALL....twizzlers have always been my go-to travel candy, because they won't melt if they're left in the car...YUMMY.
12Yeah, Red Vines! Go west coast!
13I've never heard of Red Vines.
14They are both yummy but Twizzlers are my favorites!
15Twizzlers! HANDS DOWN!
16This is like, the cutest taste-test ever.
17Ok, so I love Twizzlers. I moved to from the east coast to the west cost and kept on trying to give Red Vines a chance. I must say, Red Vines are only good when they are super fresh. Otherwise its like your chewing on a piece of plastic. But as far as licorice goes - Kenny's Juicy Twists are the best I have ever had!
18Red Vines forever! I didn't know they weren't available everywhere until I went to college in a place where you couldn't find them and people had never even heard of them. Horror! I used to get a giant tub at Costco anytime I was home to take back with me which was always much enjoyed by me and my other West Coast friends.
I can't stand Twizzlers. The texture is part of it, but I really find the taste horrible too. They kind of make my tongue tingle which can't be good.
19Red vines are SOOOO much better!
20I love red vines with a passion! I could seriously eat an entire bag by myself!
21I love Red Vines! They're great fresh, but I actually like them better when they're a little "stale." You can pull at them and they give a delightful little snap. I didn't know they had other flavors - I'll have to give them a try!
I don't like Twizzlers. The squeaky plastic texture is really unappealing to me, and there's something off and plastic-y about the taste too. I do, however, really like the Twizzlers Pull-and-Peel. Fun to eat, and tastes a lot better than the regular kind, IMO.
22red vines all the way. i hate the way twizzlers are kind of waxy.
23red vines are better in my opinion, with twizzlers im scared out yanking out some teeth with the amount of pullin i have to do when biting haha
24I absolutely prefer Twizzlers.
25i love redvines! they are so yummy!
26I love Twizzlers! Red Vines have a strange texture and after taste to me...
27Red Vines! Red Vines texture comes from the fat that they are made with wheat flour and basically rapidly dried. There not standard rope candy.
Twizzlers have a weird cough medicine after taste. perhaps that's why my sister loves them, she loves cough syrup.
28Twizzlers are my fave! Red Vines just have the strangest taste to me.
29For my money, Aussie licorice is the best. But second to that, Red Vines.
30I've always hated Twizzlers - they taste like plastic
31Oh hells yeah, Twizzlers.
32Red vines can go to hell.
twizzler girl here!
33I don't think I've ever had red vines. I'm not much of a licorice fan but I'd be willing to eat any of them.
34I've never actually had Red Vines, but my favorites are Strawberry Twizzlers. Much better than the Cherry ones!
35both are tasty, but i really like the pull and peel cherry twizzlers. they're my puppies favorite too!00
36Red Vines are gross! I have a bag of Twizzlers in my purse and another bag hidden in my underlovelies drawer right now!
37your job sucks.
38I grew up on twizzlers, but after trying red vines in college I had a new favorite licorice. They are sooooo much better than plastic-y twizzlers.
39Red vines make better straws
I used to like twizzlers okay when
when I was growing up, but now they are both just too fake tasting for me
40Absolutely, Red Vines all the way. Twizzlers have a strange fake taste to them and are too plastic-y feeling.
