I was wasting my time on checking out YouTube when I came across this video clip from Buy Me That! an old 1980s special that taught kids the tricks in advertising. In this particular clip a "makeup artist for food" — these days they would be known as a food stylist — teaches everyone how to make burgers look tasty and delicious. The key is to cook them for only 20 seconds on each side, and to mark them with skewers. Oh and if it's too tiny, just rip it and spread it out, no one will know. To check out the video and see if you know all the tricks, just read more.

i remember watching that! in fact, i just told my friend the other day about gluing sesame seeds onto buns in commercials.
Wow! Super-interesting. I love food-styling secrets. I also read that glue is used instead of mayonnaise. And at my old job, we faked ice cream all of the time!
LOL Tidal! I was thinking the same thing while watching this again...I saw it back in like elementary school!
my husband will love this!he's a burger freak and has a burger blog. i bet this will be the next 'video of the week'.
I want to be a food stylist. Why does that seem so cool. I have seen this video before.
bellaressa I want to be a food stylist too. I also wanted to be one of those people who put the sound in the movies afterwards. I forget what they're called...sound editor maybe?
Follie (or is it folly) artist?
That's so cool! I love watching food stylists at work. It really makes you understand why the pictures on the boxes look SO much better than the products you make at home.
The truth of food styling is so weird...I read somewhere that for ice cream pictures, they add food dye to vegetable shortening and scoop it out. It looks perfect and never melts.
i like how she says "even tho the burger will only be on the screen a few seconds, he's got to look SO big and juicy..." that's so pervy but funny..
Oh wow how different...
