Ketchup is ketchup right? Tomatoes, sugar some spices. It's a condiment, not a gourmet sauce, right? Wrong! Maybe it's just because the British seemed more refined than the rest of us, but the Daily Mail is reporting that they're about to receive a gourmet Heinz ketchup.
The new "premium" ketchup has taken the chefs at Heinz over a year to perfect and it will cost three times as much as regular ketchup. According to Heinz it is meant to appeal to folks "who want a more sophisticated table sauce to match their palate."
There's no news on whether or not the US leg of Heinz is planning on releasing a similar product, but if they did, would you buy it?

1no thanks! i'll pay the regular amount and eat regular ketchup ... the amount i eat it anyway, i would never spend three times the amount for expensive ketchups. dijion ketchups perhaps? [barenaked ladies? anyone?]
2Definitely. I love Heinz ketchup. I would at least try the gourmet version once.
3the only thing i ever need ketchup for at home is burgers. and we don't make gourmet burgers.
4To me ketchup is just not a gourmet food anyway so this seems silly.
I remember a ketchup taste test that Cook's Illustrated did a few years ago. They rated many ketchups from hunts and heinz to far more expensive gourmet ketchups and organics. The overwhelming winner was regular Heinz. People said that Heinz was "just what ketchup should taste like" or words to that effect. So the 3x more expensive Heinz might not win a taste test either.
5What exactly makes this worth paying more money for? Does it have caviar or truffles in it? Seems like a silly idea.
6I'd try it at a restaurant, but I doubt I'd ever think it necessary to pay 3x more for ketchup. I like regular Heinz just feinz.

10I have a weird confession. I don't like ketchup.
When I was in high school, I worked at a video game store and this guy who always came in the store smelled like garbage and ketchup. Ever since then, I don't like the taste of ketchup. Weird I know, but I can't help it. Maybe I'd like gourmet ketchup. I'm willing to try.

15OMG calamari! How do you live without ketchup? I think you need to be hypnotized so you can forget that experience and give into the wonder that is ketchup.
16Keep in mind that in the UK, Heinz is known for a lot more than just ketchup. They do quite acceptable tinned soup, I've seen tinned pasta (think Chef Boyardee), and of course, baked beans. After all, Heinz Meanz Beanz!
So yeah, go for it. But they wouldn't be so foolhardy as to introduce such a product in the US without it becoming the next New Coke.
17We are sort of suckers for "luxury" foods, though (at least on the West Coast, I don't know about other parts of the U.S.). I could see this making its way into a few fancy-pants supermarkets.
