We've all been in crazy situations, and I want to know how you handle entertaining fiascoes and bad restaurant behavior. I'll present a situation and you tell me what you would do. Here's this week's scenario:
You've heard all about Starbucks attempts to improve the quality of their coffee and service so you decide to stop in and treat yourself to a Frappuccino. The drink is delicious and rewarding until you get about half way through when suddenly you realize nothing but giant chunks of ice are left! What would you do?
To see what I would do in this situation — true story, it happened to a Sugar gal! — read more.
I would return to the Starbucks where I purchased the drink and ask them — politely — to remake it, taking care to thoroughly blend it. I would thank them nicely. Later while at my computer, I would file a complaint post on My Starbucks Idea.

Wow, that's happened to me as well. I love the flavors of the Frappucinos and like the fact that they have a "Light" version of many flavors... but it seems that every time I have bought one they never seem fully blended... I have never said anything to the barista because usually by the time I notice I'm already long gone. So my solution, and it's a permanent one, is I no longer go to Starbucks. They are way over priced anyways, and the quality of service tends to be very poor, no matter what Starbucks you go to.
1I'd definitely ask them to reblend it. I don't go to Starbucks very often just because of reasons like this one. I don't think that their coffee/service/product, whatever, is any better or more special that any other place.
2For as much as they charge for drinks, I'd say something to them. Most Bux I've been in the Barista's are very accomodating, although I did have one nasty one once, when I asked whether it was indeed sugar-free (I could have sworn I saw him pump from the full sugar one) he said "yes" and I said okay are you sure...he replied with a nasty "Listen I know how to do my job"...Okay Mr. Cranky Pants! I've also not seen him in that Bux ever again...
3I agree. For their price it must be perfect.
4I might be disappointed at first, but then I would remember that people are rioting across the globe over access to food, and how pretentious and asinine anyone would be to to complain about chunks of ice in their drink.
Are you serious?
5That down time they had to "perfect" their coffee was a waste of time and money. I tried their regular coffee and it still has that bitter, bad taste. My friend got a frapp, and she had a different issue: it was still separated. Obviously, she had them re-mix it. Like Brandi, I don't go there anymore. The coffee I brew at home is MUCH better and cheaper.
6Buy a bottled frap instead; no ice in there.
7I used to LOVE Starbucks back in the day, and was even a Starbuck's barista for a few years in high school. My manager would have KILLED me if he knew I served a drink with chunks of ice in it or if I gave a customer an attitude.
That said, it has been quite a few years since my barista days, and I have notice the quality of their service and product both drastically decline.
There actually (surprisingly!) aren't any Starbucks in my neighborhood or on my way to work, and I've found I enjoy the coffee from small local shops much more than the corporate chains.
8For some strange reason, the Starbucks in South East Asia tastes much better than the ones here in the US.
9I had the same basic thing happen to me a few weeks ago. I got a bad drink and took it back. They remade it and it was still bad. By that time I was fuming so I just left.
I did, however, write in to customer service via the website and got a very nice response and two drink vouchers as an apology. I was impressed. For that price it had better be right and they went far enough to keep me as a customer.
10i never order frappucinos but i've had TOO MUCH foam in my latte's . so much there's more foam than actual liquid. All I do now is ask for NO FOAM, and if i forget and they add too much foam then i'll ask for them to make it again (and not just add milk)
11If I were still in the store and the line wasn't ridiculously long I would probably ask them to blend it again But...I probably would just so Oh Well and drink it anyways
I guess because I'm not a big Frap drinker...Skinny Lattes mainly (with a little whip cream!
) The guy at Starbuck's laughed when I asked for a Skinny Honey Latte with Whip!!
Sure...SKinny...sure! Hey it makes me feel better! LoL!
12i agree laurenmarie--not a huge deal...maybe have them remake it but to complain? i like my fraps with a little ice anyways--maybe not chunks but it wouldnt reeally bother me.
13i think that i would also return to the starbucks to have them reblend my drink. if i wanted an iced coffee i would have ordered that. we all know that mistakes are made though, when blenders are involved too - but you're paying a lot of $$ for a blended drink and if you can't drink it then it's a moot point.
14I don't think it's pretentious or asinine to make a valid complaint over something you spend your hard earned money on. At the same time I think it's ridiculous to spend money on Starbucks, like I said in my post earlier it's over priced and not very good. I had to learn that the hard way. I'd rather go to a local coffee shop and purchase their drinks and in a way help out the community... not some corporate giant that can't get their act or employees acts together.
15frappuccino's are my FAVORITE thing at Starbuck's. When you order, ask them to DOUBLE BLEND your drink. that means they blend it two times to make sure it is SUPER smooth
be sure to say "double blended" and not "blended twice". i've had them misunderstand me and make me a "blended chai" before.
16Next time I went in I would ask them to make sure it was blended cause last time it wasn't. If you notice before you even leave the store you could ask them to blend it a little more. Always make sure you check things like this before leaving.
17I would love to have it reblended, but by the time I realize there is still too many chunks of ice I am blocks away. I don't stay at Starbucks to have my drinks. I get them to go. If I notice it immediately..of course I would say something. I have had it happen more times than I can remember!!
18if your still there get it reblended, but if not ask them to blend it a little longer next time and explain why.
19Since I can't get to Starbucks myself, my husband or the friend who helps take care of me is usually the one to go there. Neither of them would have a clue as to whether it was blended right or not, and there's NO way I'd ask them to go back to have it reblended if they didn't do it right. Since I'm at home, I'd probably have them bring the blender to me and blend it myself (partly because then I'd know it was really the way I wanted it, and partly because I'm not about to trust either of them with a blender - they're HOPELESS in the kitchen! LOL)
However, if I asked them some other time to get another, I'd be sure to write down exactly what I wanted, including the instruction to have to blended longer and then, when they get it, shake the cup a little bit to see if they can feel or hear large pieces of ice. If so, get it blended some more.
Usually, that's not going to be an issue for me, though, because I don't do Starbucks very often, and when I do, it's almost always a really big (I don't speak Italian) decaf mocha with peppermint. Heaven in a cup!
20I hate chunks in my blended drinks which is why I stopped going to *$. I now visit coffee bean and tea leaf who make a much smoother blended drink and they dont make me feel like a idiot when I ask for a small.
21Wow, I have NEVER had this issue at a Starbuck's before. I've found ice in blended drinks from independent cafes before, but not Starbuck's. An issue I do have is that I need to stir my iced caramel macchiato myself. I get that that's the way it is supposed to look, but I have to mix it myself before I can drink it.
22I hate the iced drinks, so I always go with the Fraps. However, I have had ice chunks at the bottom of mine on a few different occasions before. It wasn't enough to bother me, though.
Lately, the problem has been that it's not blended enough. It is quite aggravating to get half way through your drink & the last half is some barely flavored frap ice! I'll try the double blend request next time.
The last time I was at my nearest Starbucks, I asked for no whip cream & of course, the guy gave me a ton of it. So, after I asked him to please scrape it off, he displayed a bit of an attitude & he actually huffed while he was scraping it off. It clearly irritated him. I just kept thinking that it has to suck to work at a coffee shop & I gave him a big thank you.
23I gave up on Starbucks. The quality of the drinks were never consistent. I've switched to Peets and I love them way more.
24We are Batdorf & Bronson drinks. We rarely go to starbucks. If this had happened to be I would do what most everyone is saying and have them re-blend it as long as I am in the store. However if I have left and didn't notice until it was almost gone, I don't think I would ask them to make me a new one. I would let them know the next time I was in.
25Yeah Shannzu! Im a barista at Peets and I would have to say it's the best coffee Ive ever had! Plus the company is good about fixing customer complaints-- if you're ever not happy with the product, be direct and polite and you will get the drink remade, and probably a free drink card. You can email the company too and they will email you back drink vouchers.
26for me, by time i usually drink the frap im back at the office, and its not worth it to drive back. i think it really depends on who is making the drink and how busy they are. im lucky to have good experiences with them. but at the same time, i will go out of my way to hit up my local independent coffee shop! ^___^
on a random note, there is a starbucks on charles street in baltimore that seriously made the best fraps i have ever had. visited a friend there and i was SHOCKED. it was so good! =P
27I don't really like fraps...I stick to one drink (latte) either in the hot or iced version...with various amounts of espresso depending on how tired I am. The only problems I've had with the lattes from Starbucks is the occasional over-zealous barista that adds about a half cup of foam.
Which is why I always get a no-foam latte
28I've never had a problem with Starbucks service, and more than once i've gotten a free coffee. Once because it was slightly the wrong drink (I ordered skim milk and she made it with whole, but caught her mistake before she handed it to me) and secondly because it was busy and it took awhile to get my drink. Just realize that people make mistakes and if you're polite mostly people are happy to fix the problem
29I feel like this has happened to me every time I've ordered something cold from a Starbucks.
30I was a barista in high school for an independent shop and the Starbucks way of making coffee always bugged the crap out of the rest of us - and definitely spoiled me to espresso shots hand-pulled and lattes and chai without flavored syrup.
I agree with sauterhead...it seems like every single time I have ordered a frap at Starbucks half of it is unblended ice chunks. I've never complained about it because I figured it just went with the frozen drink territory. I eventually stopped ordering frozen drinks from Starbucks and even more recently stopped going to Starbucks at all because it's lost it's appeal.
31When I used to order the frapps I would always tell them to double blend it. I just don't even bother anymore because it always taste watery. I get the green tea lemonade extra sweet and sometimes it still not sweet enough so I just go there once in awhile.
