Happy Hour: Absinthe
Last week a bunch of us partook in an after work
happy hour. We spent the evening at
Shanghai 1930, where we ate tasty dim sum morsels, and drank way too many drinks. One of these drinks was a straightforward absinthe service. It's an interesting and dramatic thing to order — the sugar is lit on fire — with a nice, full flavor. However, you'll want to avoid it if you dislike anise flavored things. My ex brought some back too, but he came back through the States and they made him discard it.
A friend ordered this..NOT CHEAP!!! and it tastes like blace licorace to to me. my hubby did a strait shot with her hubby and about fell flat on the floor!!

even tried it with the sugar cube and water, still didnt' like it.
3Some of my friends smuggled in some absinthe from an Amsterdam trip a few years ago. It was the real stuff and they served it correctly, and it did NOTHING for me. It was so bizarre!
4I'd like to try it - but the REAL kind and not the new kind without the hallucinogen that they now have in the States.
5So some form of "the green fairy" is legal here? Well without the part that makes it famous for apparently driving artists mad... It was mentioned a lot in my 19th Century French painting art history class.
6Legal in Boston!
7Can't wait for the televised Fourth of July from the Esplinade. The first several rows of people are always cranked from drinking all day. With that stuff being legal, holy sh*te!
8*Esplanade.
9We had it served like this when we honeymooned in Victoria. I really didn't think it was doing anything to us. I look back at some of the pictures and maybe it was
10Oh my. I had a crazy New Year's Eve two years ago that included Absinthe. haha
11My dad bought some absinthe as soon as they re-legalized it out here in California. (I mean that, too. As soon as he heard, he was in the car on his way to get some.) He was giving it to some of the people at our annual Christmas party. Towards the end of the night, when he was kinda toasty, he announced, "Hell, I've had stronger stuff than this!"
My dad is crazy, but I love him.
12Can anyone describe what anise tastes like? I've never had it before, well, not that I know of.
13emsilees09: check out this little article about anise.
14What a fun slideshow! I'm sad I missed the flames!
15What a coincidence. I'm attending a party this weekend called "Night of the Green Fairy." They will be serving absinthe as the main drink. Can't wait to try it.
