Last week a few of us were talking about how difficult it is to get our parents' recipes. My mom and dad both tend to eyeball things, and when I ask them how much they usually say, "Eh, just a little, not too much."
Each time I go home, I watch my mom prepare dishes and take notes, sometimes even video. It's tedious, but I know that I now have those recipes in hand.
The family recipes mean a lot to me, and I was wondering how you felt about them. Are yours written down somewhere?

I call my dad and mom routinely to get recipes. I have some of them written down, but need to get more.
My M-I-L made an Italian family cookbook for my husband and his brother/cousins a few years ago. It's great to have them all together like that!
1I don't have all the ones I want...like your parents Yum, my mom eyeballs everything! Its so hard to get exact measurements out of her.

I've been collecting them lately. I'm going to put together a book of family recipes for my grandmother's birthday. So I'm finally getting some of the recipes I've wanted for years!
4I have most of the ones that I want, but occasionally I'll go to make something and I'll have to call my mom for the recipe. I have them all saved in my computer. One of my projects this summer is to print them out and make a cookbook
5I've got the two top recipe's in my family, creamed cabbage and a super cheesy version of stuffed bell peppers. There are a few more I need to collect, but I am very glad I get to carry these traditional recipes on to my family.
6I have some of them. It's been one of my goals to combine all the recipes from both of my grandmothers and put them into a printed cookbook.

8My mom recently called me and she was super excited. Apparently my grandfather just discovered a long lost recipe for these amazing shrimp my grandma used to make. Now he is going to teach me the recipe so I can make them for my mom!
9Well, they're not really recipes, but specific things I want to know how to make because my family is from the Dominican Republic. On my list of "must learn how to make" is what Dominicans call torta (not the same as the Mexican one at all).
10In the last 10 years or so, i have made it a point to gather family recipes, and whenever possible watch them make the dish, every christmas i help my scandinavian grandmother make swedish meatballs, Krumkake, little doughnuts, almond cookies. My now deceased paternal grandmother left her recipes and we all have been trying to get them right (she must have reworked them as time went on and the written one is just a guide!) My mother in law just printed out recipe books for all her children, and she adds to it periodically. ALong with stories about each recipe and now pictures!
11My grandparents are/were from Lithuania and there are a few AMAZING recipes I now have.
12We don't have any kids yet, and much of what we make is improvised, but we've already started a "family cookbook", with recipes, guidelines we use for improvising recipes, etc, all in preparation for when the potential future kids want those recipes. It also is a great way to keep track of favorite recipes from other sources, such as online or some of our cookbooks, especially since we usually tweak them anyway, so just remembering where we got the recipe from isn't enough.
13Frozen fish sticks...well done lamb...peanut butter. The only spice in my mother's kitchen was ketchup. I don't think so.
14my mother is so a eyeballer that I think I might have to steal that video taping idea because writing it down would NEVER happen with her especially for things like pan con pavo mmm which she makes the best out of our WHOLE family!
15My family doesnt keep recipes written down. I just learned them from watching as a kid and then eventually making them myself. Puerto ricans just know how much to put and when to put it.
16there is just one special recipe in my family - my mom's great-aunt's pie crust. we even have a ritual: when somebody gets their own place for the very first time, their mother buys them the joy of cooking and writes the recipe on the inside cover
17my family's recipes aren't written down, so i learned them over the years.
18It's a little of both. We have written down most of the family favorites that are baking (i.e. eye balling a little more difficult). Most of the other items are just passed down from generation and to the next. I've learned to cook many of my husbands favorite things by cooking with his mom. Same with my mom (although she's the kind of lady that HAS to have and follow a recipe). I'm more of a free lance chef - I like to keep it loose and easy.
But, I like the idea of a family cookbook. Maybe some other century when I have time I'll take a stab at that project.
19I have my fav recipes my mom makes, but getting recipes from my grandmothers' are another story. I have one for my maw-maw's famous rolls and chocolate pie, but my nanny doesn't use recipes, and she is at "an age" where she thinks it is silly to use recipes so the only time I get them from her are when I watch her cook, which unfort since I moved is not often. I do have one for her fried chicken, and she told me how to make her famous 14 layer choc cake, but I don't don't know how to make the delish fudgy icing. I am on a quest though!

21We made a cookbook on shutterfly with photos and put together all my mom's recipes, especially my greatgrandmother's cookies that we make every year at christmastime. It is really cool - comfort food like meatloaf and soups, my mom's potato salad, and everything we have shared and used through the years.

My grandmother & great-grandmother on my father's side, wrote all the recipes down on idex cards; we have two index card tins full of recipes.
However I do not have recipes from my mom or great-aunt. My great-aunt always eye-balled amounts (which she was terrific at) so we always have to guess (she never wrote them down and she is too old to remember them now.)
My mom would write hers down if I asked; she has some wonderful dishes.
23Forgot to mention that my favorite family recipes were:
- my grandmother's homemade meatballs with oninon.
- my great-aunt's egg & potato salad.
- my great-grandmother's tuna salad which my grandmother also made.
- my mom's lasagna.
- my cousin's ham & egg salad.
My father also cooks however he doesn't really follow a set recipe; he always uses dumpling or soy sauce, red peppers, ginger zest, curry powder, rice or pasta, onion, garlic and tomato.
24My mom and mother-in-law both gave me handmade recipe books with family recipes at my bridal shower. They're awesome although I haven't perfected everything yet.
My dad makes amazing meatloaf. I've helped several times, but his favorite words are "until it looks right."

26there are some recipes that i have that i'm happy about but there are still a few that i'd like to track down since they aren't the most common of dishes to make.
27I have been trying to get a bunch of recipes from my mom for the last few years. I realized that if I didn't get them they would be lost forever once she's gone. The hardest part of learning her recipes is that she does everything by taste so I have to guesstimate all of the measurements!
The big test will be New Year's Day...I told my mom I would do all of the cooking (this is a huge deal for us Japanese folks). I'm nervous just thinking about it.
28My mum got me to learn how to cook for the whole family when I was about 13 so I learnt all her recipes, and as they are all eye balled measurements Iv adjusted them over time, and sometimes my dad now prefers my variations over mums!
