Costa Rican Fruit Cocktail
Mamones
A vendor kindly gave me a small bunch of mamones after showing me how to eat them. The skin breaks off quite easily to reveal a slimy grape-like fruit. The stringy flesh was rather hard to remove from the seed. However, with a little practice I began to enjoy these lip puckering lime-like fruit.

I dont know about Mamones, but we Puerto Ricans call these Quenepas.
You can get them from any street fruit vendor (in the summer) here in NYC - generally 1lb for like $1.99.
I wonder what they are called in English though?
1I LVOE LOVE LOVE mamones!!! I want to be back home right now to be able to have crazy amounts of good fresh fruits.
2I'm almost positive this is the green fruit I remember having as a kid, but I can't remember what they were called at all.
3Never mind. I just asked my mother and it was a different fruit.

5In Guyana these are called Ginnips. They are the best fruit of all time and I miss them terribly!
6They're called ginnips in Jamaica as well. I agree they it's tan deliciosa one of my favorite fruits taking second place only to mangos.
