A few weeks ago I asked my dad if he could give me his recipe for goulash. I grew up eating this tomato-pasta-ground-meat goodness — which is nothing like Czech goulash — on a regular basis and was really craving it. However, when I asked him for it, he just laughed and said there was no real recipe. He tweaks it and makes it up each time, depending on what is available. So I went to the store, grabbed a few items, and made my own version.
The dish is easy enough for a weeknight meal, but hearty enough for a weekend. If you want to see how mine came together, read more.

Ingredients
2 1/2 cups uncooked radiatori pasta
1 onion, diced
2 cloves garlic, minced
1/2 pound ground turkey (you can use ground beef, chicken or pork)
1 28 oz. can of whole peeled tomatoes, chopped
chili powder
salt
pepper
olive oil
Directions
- In a large pot, cook the pasta as directed.
- Meanwhile, in a bowl, season ground turkey with chili powder, salt and pepper.
- In a large skillet, heat several tablespoons of olive oil. When oil is shimmering, add onions. Sauté for several minutes then add garlic.

- When onions are nearly translucent, add ground turkey. Cook until turkey is fully browned and cook all the way through. Note: If there is excess oil from the meat, drain at this point.
- Next, add the tomatoes. Cook until heated. Season with salt and pepper as needed.

- At this point, the pasta should be about ready. Drain and return to pot. Add tomato mixture to pasta. Stir until fully incorporated and serve!

- Garnish with parmesan cheese, minced green onions, etc.

Definitely not what I think of when I hear goulash. I would eat this one HAHA!! Neat looking noodles. I have never seen them before.
1I remember went I was first dating my fiance I told him I was making goulash for dinner. I made something similar to what you did. He was expecting the Czech kind. He was sort of bummed, but soon got over it when he realized how awesome my goulash is

4I have never had goulash but this recipe sort of reminds me of American chop suey.
5I grew up on this as well! Only differnces being that we used beef instead of turkey, and added chopped red and green bell peppers. Never heard the term "American chop suey" until I moved to the East Coast! We always called it "hotdish," a term that THEY had never heard of. Still makes me giggle.
6It doesn't resemble at all the stuff we get in Europe, but it certainly looks really yummy. I'll have to try it.
7My mom frequently made goulash like this and also a similarly ambiguous casserole called "Johnny Marzetti" which was basically goulash plus corn and cottage cheese covered with cheese and baked.
8I'm SO glad someone else grew up eating this "goulash" too! It might not be authentic but it's pure comfort food to me! I like to use a LOT of old bay seasoning in mine and I really like turkey/ro-tel tomatoes too since I like a lot of kick.

11haha. glad we all grew up on "goulash"- in my house it was pasta, marinara sauce, corn, ground beef, and cheese. Always yummy! My boyfriend was thinking Czech goulash when I first told him, too. I now tell him to think of it as pasta casserole, as that's probably more apt.
12I make something like this, but in our house we call it Yergess. As in, "Mama, what are we having for dinner." "Yergess." "What's yergess?" "Your guess is as good as mine!" ha ha ha Seriously, when I was first married and we were broke, we ate this often because it's cheap and tasty!

14It's so funny, but even to this day, I will ALWAYS opt for a warm plate of "hotdish" over a fancy pants dinner. Well prepared comfort food is the best!

18I actually made this dish last night but I forgot to add the parmesean cheese. I believe it was hit because the pot is totally empty today.
