Whether you're making a sandwich or trying to copy a dish at a high-end establishment, restaurants can be great inspiration for home cooks.

CaterpillarGirl, I would LOVE your recipe for Eel sauce.
2Mirin seasoning sauce (not the wine), soy sauce, white sugar
1/2 cup mirin, 1/4 cup soy, 2 tblsp sugar, simmer till thick, add more sugar if you want it thicker.
You can get mirin at any chinese market.
3I have been wanting to start a feature here that does just this. It would be called Restaurant Recreations!

It would be really awesome, Party! Please do it!
Count me in. My job gives me a little inside edge.
6My big thing is recreating food from comedy shows - a lot of UK ones but Seinfeld is good for this. I've made soup nazi soups, and chocolate babka recently which went down very well!

There are a few websites out there that do recreate restaurant recipes. Most of them are recipes from uninspired big chains. I prefer the exotic local eateries myself.
As for recreating recipes myself I try once in a while but I usually take a basic idea and make it my own rather than try to completely recreate the dish. I also like to try to recreate some
of the items on Iron Chef. That one can be a major challenge.
I made the black bean soup from Zoup! I was so proud of myself!

I was like yes I don't do the fast food copies that much and totally forgot I made Carl's Jr Santa Fe chicken sandwich. It was spot on
Sure, if I love the meal, I might try to do my own version at home...there is this amazing vegetarian restaurant in Key West and I had some delicious sandwiches there last summer. When I came home, I tried to recreate them.
11I have replicated a few recipes from restaurants. And I make the Cracker Barrel hash brown casserole a few times a year.
12I *want* to recreate recipes, but I have no clue where to start. If only I could get Surf Taco to send me their vingarette stuff...
13I would love to have that feature party. I have done a few sandwiches but that's it. Dh and I go to restaurants because we can each get something we like. It is a picky eater so cooking at home is boring because the dishes we both eat are limited.
14I made lettuce wraps for my cocktail party last night (thanks to a YumSugar recipe!) and it was a HUGE hit. Three girls asked me for the recipe.
15I do this all the time and everything always comes out amazing. There are websites out there for this and they are so fun. A lot of the times I just put my own personal spin on things but take ideas from the meal at the restaurant.
16I recreate dishes all the time, even ones from movies. The timpano from Big Night was a particular success! I also made French Laundry's "Oysters & Pearls" for a dinner a few years back. Delicious.

My bf recreated a vegetable & chorizo Moroccan cous cous from Chez Omar (Paris) and it was actually really good! We've also made our own paella before but that could be improved.
Very rarely...
