While many of us celebrated Memorial Day on Monday, the people of Gloucestershire, England, celebrated a different annual occasion, their infamous Cheese Rolling tournament. In this crazed and unique sporting event, men and women chase an eight-pound cheese wheel down a steep hill. The person who grabs the rolling cheese — which can reach up to 70mph! — before it crosses the finish line wins. The prize for winning the race? The handmade Gloucester cheese wheel. While the race may be all fun and games, each year numerous people are injured as they slip down the hill. To watch a video of this year's cheese rolling, read more.
What do you think of the competition? I'm a huge cheese lover, but would never plummet my body down the side of a hill. How about you: Would you participate in this race for cheese?

that's hysterical. as much as i love cheese, i don't think that i would chase a wheel down a hill.
1So how drunk are the competitors?
2Logan went to this on Gilmore Girls...
3He did? Maybe that's why I feel like I've heard of this before but can't quite put my finger on where I heard of this before.
4Good lord!
5Haha, my friends and I were just talking about this competition on Friday. Has anyone actually ever caught the cheese? I thought the winner got 25 pounds for first place, 10 for second etc.
6I think some people *have* caught the cheese, but that hill is really steep - it's not worth it, IMHO!
7Umm...
8Looks like fun! And yeah I remember this from Gilmore Girls too! Mentioning it anyway, I don't think they showed it. The people going down the mud slide cracked me up. I'd definitely do this just for fun and hope not to end up on a stretcher.
9I'd do almost anything for cheese, especially bleu cheese.
10I'd absolutely duct tape Nerf Balls to myself and do this! It's cheese!!!
11Hilarious.
12Totally worth it. Gloucester cheese is amazing.
13Well, cheese is amazing. Duh.
Shoney,
I've got the Nerfs and the duct tape. You bring the Tylenol and ice packs and were on! May the cheesiest win!
14I remember seeing this on tv about 10 years ago, and thinking I'd love to be there. Its actually a tradition that dates back hundreds of years. If I'm ever in England at the end of May you'll see me there!
15On second thought...maybe I'll try to start my own tradition here. We've got some pretty steep ravines around these parts, and I've got some pretty crazy friends. I'm not the biggest fan of cheese though, maybe a really good loaf of bread.
