Recently my dad has been on a quest to find the best Joe's Special in the Bay Area. He's determined to try every brunch place that serves the scramble until he finds the most delicious one. I don't think he's silly or even crazy, because I've been on many a food quest, so how about you? Have you ever wanted to try every restaurant until you've found that one perfect dish?

YES!
Steak Tartare!
But I found some at the resturant my birthday dinner was at!
Yes! Best Roast Chicken!
Of course!! Shrimp & Grits. NOLA in the quarter is in the lead!
No - I don't obsess about finding *the* perfect dish. However, there are certain things I order just out of tradition wherever I go. Döner kebab is one of them.
I test Tex-Mex restaurants by how well they can make cheese enchiladas and salsa.
I have. Tuna tartare, butter chicken, General Tao's chicken (Tao, not Tso in Quebec), nachos, Sangria, sushi,... My best friend and I try a new restaurant every week.
Yes, my once in a while splurge breakfast: scrambled eggs and chorizo with beans and handmade tortillas with the best cup of coffee...talk about a combo!
i've never been on a quest to find the best of something amongst several places, but i have been on a quest to find exactly what it was i was craving! once i found it one place- i stopped!
Oh, testing Chinese-American restaurants by their orange chicken is another food quest I've done.
i want to say that i've been on one - but i can't remember what i was searching for. i think that part of it was to look for something mexican...but i'm not really sure.
Here are some I've been on: sangria, chimichurri, nachos, flamenquin, meatballs.
After honeymooning in New Orleans we were on a hunt to make acceptable jambalaya. After trying many recipes and experiments we finally came up with one.
Sushi, after 10 pm. I've also had quests for Quizno's, Potbelly's, Sofrito/Goya products (hard as hell to find out here), and even certain Organic foods (like my damn milk...I'm lactose intolerant, and can't even drink non-organic milk b/c it hurts my stomach).
I've also gone on quests like that for shoes and other "wearables".
I think I've been in one, but I can't really remember. It might have been paella. I found the best in Valencia. (Yep, I went that far.)
Nachos, salsa, tacos, and enchiladas. Thank goodness the hubby likes Mexican food as much as I do.
I have never even heard of Joe's Special...but it sounds delish. Too bad I don't eat ground beef.
I am still trying to find farro for a recipe I want to try. Craving wise was looking for a good burger the other day.
roxyb - nola shrimp and grits are heavenly
i've never quested to a restaurant necessarily (well except to find a sweet mexican place in a city that only sells sushi) but my friends and i did travel over a number of borders in search of Fiji water once. and i ended up flying some home from a trip to hawaii.
I'm on a perpetual quest for the best french onion soup.
Always trying to find the best sushi in a land-locked city.
me too! except i'm not landlocked here. recently i've trying to find the best kosher sushi place in brooklyn, and on memorial day i may have found the winner! sushi meshugga. although china glatt comes in at a close second.
I was in Atlanta recently and was determined to try at please one place mentioned in a recent spread on it in Bon Appetit. The one place I reaallly wanted to go to had had a fire and was closed but we hunted down the Cabbagetown Market which was a good idea because I don't think I would have ever thought to go in there let alone be in the neighborhood.
I've been on a fro yo quest for months. Right now, its Berry Wild on 3rd Ave. in NYC as the winner.
I'm always on a coffee quest. If I see a local coffee shop, I have to stop. I'm always on the lookout for the best latte!
We once drove 6 hours out of way to experience Nuremberg sausage in Germany. It was sooo worth it!!
i guess my quest is for the best bbq. so far i have found a place in san jose and sunnyvale that both rank pretty high, but i am sure i can find better!
i guess my quest is for the best bbq. so far i have found a place in san jose and sunnyvale that both rank pretty high, but i am sure i can find better!
eek... sorry for the double post...
I look for the perfect recipe. I will try and tweak tons until I find it! Esp once I have been to a restaurant and I liked something. Then I try to recreate it! I am trying to develop my pallate to make it easier....any suggestions yum or party on how to do that?
I once embarked on a Hot and Sour Soup quest in my town, and can now say i found the best one.
I've been on a Hot and Sour Soup quest for at least 15 years! The problem is that once I find a place I really like..it goes out of biz or they change the recipe.
Deep dish pizza. A group of us drove from New Jersey to Chicago...We wanted to real thing
*the not to
Tell ur dad to try the joes special at the Flower Maerket restaurant its MY dads favorite. I am always on the quest for Salvadorian Horchata. My niece and I call each other when we find some because it is soooo hard to find. mmm horchata mmmm
Always looking for the perfect sweetbreads. Had some great ones in BA Argentina but have a hard time finding them locally.
Baguettes in Boston...
The hottest Buffalo wings...actually no wings, all drummys please. The best so far is Scoreboard in Minneapolis/St. Paul
I'm always on a quest for Mom and Pop type independent restaurants that serve great food at a cheap price. The best burger in my area is at a Harley-ish bar, is flame broiled, perfectly seasoned, and comes in one of those cheesey plastic baskets. The decor is what I would call "Early VFW." A small price to pay, though, when your tab, with a fries and a soda, is just over 5 bucks!
Right now I'm looking for the best hanger steak in the Twin Cities. Preferably cooked medium with maître d' butter. Yum.
Holy shiite on a shingle! Three posts in a row from Minnysooodans! I think we deserve a prize, Yum. Might I suggest bacon?
In the Cinque Terra, Italy, I searched for pizza that was made fresh and not sold by the slice, which means it sits around under warming lamps getting soggy. And once in Paris, I got on a hamburger and pomme frites binge, looking for the perfect duo. Fixation is troublesome!
I feel like I'm on a never ending quest for arancinis. Can never find them anywhere. Which is good I guess since 1) theyre deep fried, 2) none live up to the fresh ones in Italy.
Best hash brown quest is a never-ending one in my life. You need different ones for different things, so it's a delicate balance of delicious!
Yes! Funnily enough I was looking for Jaffa Cakes, a british snack. there are a lot of ex-pats in Boston so I figured it wouldn't be too hard, but I was wrong! I finally got a tip from a woman in Harvard Sq to try a specific Indian/Irish grocer and I was so excited when they had them!
Too many to recount. Latest quest has been for the best Banh-Mi in Seattle. The vegetarian Banh-Mi made at the makeshift deli counter in a little Vietnamese market tops the charts so far.
Bo tai chanh!
A GOOD Italian Beef here in the Bay Area. After living in Chicago for a few years I miss them so. Someone told me they had found a good one in San Jose, but when I tried it it was awful. If anyone knows of a place I would love to hear it.
Oh I go on quests all the time! Sometimes they are to find who has the best of something: Best chicken lettuce wraps, best moroccan cuisine, best cupcakes, best french bread! And sometimes my quests are to find a place that makes something really specific: a perfect french pastry filled with chocolate bits and pastry cream
The most recent quest was for an In-n-Out burger imposter south of Denver. The menu was very similar with a little bit of the wording tweaked.
