Nobody's perfect and when it comes to cooking, I've had my fair share of kitchen catastrophes. The funny thing is, I often make the same mistake over and over again! For example, every couple of months I forget that a plastic cutting board is NOT a hot plate. Last Saturday, I ruined another cutting board by placing a hot frying pan directly on top of it. I know I'm not the only one who repeatedly messes things up, even the most skilled chefs experience kitchen bloopers. So in the spirit of dishing, tell me your common kitchen mistakes by leaving a comment below!

I let dishes/messes build up. =(
1I burn my fingers at least twice a week...steam, splattering oil, etc. The last time I burned myself, there was a pan that had been soaking in the sink for several minutes, so I thought it was fine to clean. Unfortunately, the handle was still hot
I've learned to run burns under cold water and ice them right away though, so I'm fine after a few minutes.
2my sister always overstuffs the blender when she makes smoothies --> not a pretty sight! Once she was making tomatosoup for her boyfriend and had to blend it in his new shiny blender and managed to get everything in his kitchen covered in tomatosoup! Needless to say she hasn't cooked for him since
3My worst was I turned the wrong burner on without realizing it. About fifteen seconds later I hear a loud burst and the sound of glass hitting. I had a glass casserole dish (empty) on top of the burner I mistakenly turned on and the thing exploded, shards of glass were flying everywhere!
4I am still "new" to cooking meat and will let it overcook regularly instead of undercook even with the help of a thermometer.
5jjuliet i do the same thing! i think i am always in such a hurry that I am always burning myself. Being in a hurry leads to many of my other mistakes as well!
6I've had my mixer for about 12 years so it's pretty old school. It came with a large and small glass mixing bowl. I don't know why I did this but I was being lazy and tried melting chocolate in the large glass bowl. You would think I would use the microwave... oh no, I put the glass bowl directly on an open flame. Yes I put it on my stove top. Once the flame hit the glass it started to crack. I was so mad at myself. I had to throw it away. I'm still sad and it happened 6 months ago... I still haven't replaced it with a proper mixer. I just bought a hand mixer as a temporary fix. I think I'm still punishing myself for making that silly, silly mistake.
7The thing I've done several times now is think I have all the ingredients to make something, I'll start making it and find I'm missing one thing. Then I end up having to make a trip to the grocery store.
8Not using the kitchen at all.
9The other day I was making french toast sticks. I love warm syrup So i put the syrup container in the oven while it was heating up not longer then 3 to 4 minutes.I thought it would be easier then putting in something that fit in the microwave. Who knew plastic melted at 400 degrees. That was a huge mess.
10I only skim the "easy" recipes and every once and awhile forget an ingredient. Last week I made scones but forgot to add butter hahaha
11I am with TidalWave - wrong burner, but it doesn't happen very often.
12I put pans on the kitchen tablecloth after taking them out of the oven without gloves on (a common but painful error.)
13Oh and i have grilled things in the oven with the foodstuff actually touching the grill resulting in small fires :S
I'm completely useless at rice. Like seriously... either it boils over or burn on the bottom. It's so sad.
14I burn myself frequently. And just yesterday, had my broiler on and left a plastic measuring cup on top of stove, stove top got so hot from broiler, that it melted my measuring cup!
15I burn myself a lot, too.
16I tend to only skim recipes and leave out important steps...especially if it's a recipe I use pretty often. I figure I should have it down by now, but I usually don't.
I always leave things that melt (plastic, etc.) on the hot stove.
I don't make them anymore (now I do it from scratch), but I ALWAYS would mess up boxed brownies--HOW can you do that?!
17i find it nearly impossible to boil water without having it spill over onto the stove
18i normally walk away then hear the sizzling sound and have to go running back over
I once burned a ring into a table (through a placemat, mind you) with a hot pot of soup. But that was long ago, and my parents have never let me forget what I did to their table.
19Well, this is not a common error, but...
A number of years ago, when my oldest son was younger and had a serious sweet tooth, to the exclusion of ever eating healthy foods, I would have to hide cookies and treats from him.
Then one time I was preheating the oven, and I had forgotten all about the package of Keebler Fudge Stripe cookies I had hidden in there. Ha, kids wouldn't check an oven would they? I should have hidden them in the vegetable crisper.
Oh, yeah, it melted plastic and goo all over the place. So that was fun to clean up.
20I don't read recipes well enough. Lately, I get ready to cook dinner and realize I have forgotten to let the meat marinate. overnight. Then, we have to order a pizza. I also turn on the wrong burner, once ruining a plastic bowl.
21Haha Tidalwave, my bf did the EXACT thing you mentioned.
And as with a lot of people, I burn myself a LOT! I was at the dermatologist today and he was scanning my body for any unusual spots, and he asked about all the burns on my arms, wrists, & hands. Literally, it's about once a week for me.
AND, I am incredibly messy when I cook. Like, REALLY messy. Other than that, no real huge mistakes. Oh, wait, often times I am making a meal, and totally forget to start the rice, which usually takes the longest to cook!
22I usually forget an item on my recipe list so I end up going to the store again.
23I live in the South, and we eat a ton of fried foods, and my biggest mistake is letting the oil get too hot so that it starts to boil and spew everywhere. Thankfully my stove is in the island in the kitchen and not against the wall. But I do it with all oils, because I turn it on high and forget to turn it down. I also did that with the grill recently. My stepdad is teaching me the art of grilling but he wasn't here this night to remind me of things. I turned it on just fine and put it on high to heat it up. My mom was still marinating the meat, so I didn't put it in there for a little while. When I came outside, the flames were spewing outside of the grill nearly onto the side of the house! It was full of flames on the inside, and I opened it to see what was happening, only causing the flames to get much bigger! My mom called my stepdad and he said to just let it die on itself, but after seeing the flames out the back, my mom poured a pitcher on top, cracking the porcelain cover in an attempt to cool it down. It finally cooled down, and when my stepdad arrived he asked why we didn't just move the grill away from the house. I don't know. Oh I also burn popcorn a lot. No one lets me make it for them anymore.
24*ps: long, sorry, but it was intense! I saw the life of my house flash before my eyes. Thankfully father's day is coming up and my stepdad is due a new grill anyways. I think the one I ruined is nearly 20 years old.
I always forget that I am toasting nuts and burn them in the oven. Every time.
25I don't make mistakes.
26I've done the "miss one key ingredient" and the "wrong burner" before. But the one mistake that I will never make again is grabbing something out of the oven with a WET kitchen towel. I got a major burn on my hand.
Sugars, don't ever grab something from the oven with a wet kitchen towel!!! YEEEOOOOWWWW!
27For whatever reason, I always fill my loaf plans too much when making bread. It overflows and makes such a mess in my oven!!
28i burn things... usually cook them too long. or i end up cutting myself with something sharp.
29oh- and more times than once i have left the cardboard underneath the frozen pizza while cooking in the oven!
30I turned on the wrong burner once, also. Unfortunately the one i turned on had a package of cheese on it that i was going to add to my omlette. What a mess. I could never get that burner clean and just stopped using it.
31ElleJay- i have done the same thing - leaving the cardboard under the frozen pizza! that sucks!
32I'm sure I have my faults, but the things I don't do well in the kitchen hubby does; like I hate to prep meat, poultry, fish and seafood. So I don't mess up often cause someone else is doing the job. He's also a better baker than I am; except for bread I have a bread machine.
33Just today, I put popcorn in the microwave (I know, it's not cooking, but it's food!), for 3 minutes 21 seconds. Stupid me.... I smelled something burning and opened the microwave and an army of smoke steamed out!!! Now the house smells like burned popcorn!
34AlwaysalwaysALWAYS burn my fingers. To the point where I feel like I've lost a lot of nerves! Ouch!
Also I've forgotten specific vital ingredients several times. Examples: eggs (probably the worst), baking powder, baking soda, oh my!
35Something in my oven dripped and was burning at the bottom. I tried to scrape it up really fast using a *plastic* spatula. Needless to say it melted and not only had burnt food in the oven but burnt plastic.
36Small, metal kitchen gadgets (such as garlic press) falling into the disposal. I don't notice until I turn on the disposal.
37I always forget to do things that take a while first. For instance, I'll forget to melt butter first and let it cool while I work on the rest of a recipe. It's annoying, because when I'm done with everything else, I'll have to just sit there and wait for butter to cool!
38I turn on the wrong burner all the time! I'll be waiting for something to boil and come back 10 mins later wondering why it hasn't boiled yet!
I also forget to preheat the oven on a regular basis, and always forget to butter/flour pans first, I always end up doing it after everything is ready to go.
39The biggest cooking mistake I've made was actually on a disposable BBQ at the beach, with my sister. It came in a cardboard tray that said "REMOVE BEFORE USE" on every side... I guess we were just a bit too eager to get cooking and didn't see it. So the whole BBQ catches fire and we had to throw it in the sand. Not our finest moment!!
40shoneyjoe can get over herself!
41I tend to either forget one or two things and have to make multiple trips to the store, or I leave the stove on. The second one is obviously worse, so I've taken to rechecking that I turned it off. I'm also a big spiller. I spill things all over myself on a really regular basis.
