I was a server... it was hard, but I LOVED it. I ended up with so many regulars and new friends from working at Cheeseburger in Paradise. But, I'll take my steady paycheck over tip-dependancy
any day.
waitress. it was exhausting! my husband waits tables now and he has to work until 2 in the morning some nights because the restaurant is also a bar - that sucks!
I'm a server/bartender now part-time and i love it - easy money, great people, keeps you busy. it's the ones who are the most attentive to detail who make the best servers.
Worked at everything from a coffee house, frozen yogurt and Del Taco in high school, to Spago in West Hollywood. Have been a hostess, cocktail waitress, server and trainer and eventually
consultant. Everyone should be in the service industry at some point just to see that side of it. I've been out of that industry for a long time but I'm glad I did it. It's invaluable
training if you work for a good company.
As much as I hated my time as a server, I think it should be mandatory for all teenagers to spend at least a few months working a service job like that--it definitely teaches you that your
server, hostess, etc. are human beings too, and should be treated with respect
When I was in high school I was hired at a friend's mom's Japanese restaurant for one summer. But when I got there all they wanted me to do was wash dishes. I was hoping to learn something,
not slave over a hot sink.
I think I lasted 3 days and never went back.
Oh, and I did learn that they put MSG in literally everything on the menu. The restaurant isn't around anymore.
as a reservation agent/security becuase they set up the table I would work at during the day in front of the door and a TON of people would come in asking for a table when the restaurant
didnt open until 5pm. I was so freakin lonely at that job I had to quit. I love love love F&B life and wish I was back at the F&B side of our hotel instead of rooms division which is
boring.
...as a server when I was 16 in a small steakhouse along the interstate in a DRY county. (Which means NO ALCOHOL served or purchased) Some people thought it was just the FUNNIEST THING they'd
ever heard of, a dry county. Grrrrrr....
But I do have some verrrrry interesting stories from hanging out with coworkers.
Waitress (many moons ago, server wasn't a term then) and made lots of money and never paid for food. I agree with you, Jude. It was a Mexican restaurant and oh so tasty.
i've worked as a bartender but not in a restaurant - in a bar...so i guess i can't say that i've ever worked in one. i don't know if i would really ahve the paitence for people since i know
how picky some can be .
"Phone girl" back in the day when someone wouldn't consider complaining that it was offensive to be called a "phone girl." (or "salad girl" as LeLuxe mentions!) Fun job, except the damn
customers.
bartender at a beer bar...also did many shifts as assistant manager...sooo glad I don't work there anymore. Due to company policy, we were not allowed to accept tips when we were serving on
the bar...that really stunk big time! I definitely treat servers and all such with respect and courtesy, and I try to overtip when I can. I know what it's like to try to survive on small
paychecks.

This soup ends up being a good source of three blood pressure-lowering minerals since the milk adds calcium and the potatoes deliver a dose of potassium, as well as magnesium.
I did!
1As a hostess then server!
I worked as a server, a hostess, and a manager for seven years. I'm happy to say that I'm glad I'm not doing that anymore.
2I worked as waitress, and I'm also very happy to say that I'm not doing that anymore! It was not for me..
3Hostess and bartender.
And I'm engaged to an executive chef who plans on opening his own restaurant in the not too distant future.
So I'm hoping my MBA in business will help with that!

22Yes I did, as a bit of everything and I hated every part of it. Cooking in that kind of environment made it very unenjoyable for me.
23I served for a few years, and went home every single night muttering, "I hate people."
24That's how you got sparkling clean wine glasses.
25hostess, server, bartender. I hope to never do that again.
26never have... i dont think i could make it as a waiter... too many picky people to please.
27Was a waitress at a couple different places.... you couldn't pay me a million dollars to do that line of work again!!!!

29I did work-study as a server at summer camp. If you think waiting on strangers is tough, try waiting on your peers at the age of 13.
