This map shows the popular generic names for soft drinks by county. I'm really surprised, I thought more states used the word "soda" instead of "pop" and I actually didn't realize that so many people used the word "coke" to mean all soda.

So hey, what do you call a soda?

Triumph
Torrini
Debenhams
I called it REFRESCO (Spanish), but not all of Latin America uses this word.
1SO cool, yum! Thanks.
i'm a pop girl.
2SODA!
3where i'm from it's pop. but..i moved around in college and couldn't stand people looking at me weird, so i started just referring to it specifically by name. if i want pepsi i say pepsi, coke i say coke, etc.. simplifies things.
4this was the biggest debate at my college: soda or pop. we had folks from up north and we had midwest kids like me. it's SODA. Coke refers to Coca-Cola not Pepsi. obviously. and I don't even know what "pop" is. A verb? Does soda make you pop? soda-pop...okay, but that was a terrible Britney Spears song so let's just cut that from the lexicon!
5i'm from chicago and i call it soda. i find it really weird when people call it "pop"! i used to call it coke all the time because it's the whole using-a-brand-name-to-mean-the-product-in-its-entirety...like calling all gelatin "jell-o", calling all bandages "band-aids", and all facial tissue "kleenex." when i was younger i even called parmesan cheese "kraft" hehe. it's definitely soda haha and i get corrected sometimes and argue about it.
6i live in central texas, i think i say coke the most, but i say the other two alot too, guess it depends on my mood
7for me, "pop" was what my mom called it growing up. Brings back fond memories. But I haven't heard anyone call it anything but soda since I was a youngster
8This is such a great poll ! Love it ! I'm going to keep checking back and looking at the results because I find this so incredibly interesting. I've been to places where its coke, soda, soda pop and pop - crazy!
9It's POP in Michigan!!!
10soda
11In Texas, if you want a "soda," you'll request "coke," and then be asked what kind of coke.. ie: pepsi, coca cola, sprite, etc.. It's all coke here!!
12I grew up in the South calling everything a coke -
Mom: Do you want a coke?
Me: Yes please.
Mom: What kind?
Me: Diet Sprite, thanks.
But for the past few years I've used the generic term "soda" because sometimes people will give me a Coca-Cola, and I don't drink full-sugar drinks, only diet. By referring to it as soda, it is known that I'm using a general term and not referring to a specific brand name.
13I love this map!! Growing up in TX everything was coke, and then when I went to college (DC) it was so funny to hear all the different names people used. I had never thought about it prior, but using "coke" is like saying "kleenex" instead of tissue or "ziplock" instead of baggie- using a brand name as a generic for everything.
14In asia, or Singapore, where Im from, we call it a "soft' drink or carbonated drink.
15I've never understood what the big deal is, I go to college in Seattle and we have lots of kids from California so there are many facebook groups about it being soda or pop. I honestly think I use both and most of the time I'll say exactly what I want- Coke, Sprite, whatever.
Pop,
soda, soda-pop
how about we all compromise and say soft drink?
16coke definitely prevails in texas. if you say soda or pop we laugh at you! haha. it just sounds so strange! but then again texans sound strange to a lot of people.
17I don't get why on earth people call it Coke. It makes no sense.
18Coke is a TYPE of soda pop. You ask for a Coke, you get Coke. Thats like someone saying I want a Pepsi and meaning 7-Up. Wierdness.
I grew up in MI and it was pop, so I'm use to calling ti pop, but soda seems just as well. I just don't get Coke at all.
Ah well.
I live in North Carolina and my philosophy is that soda is a yankee word. Pop is a midwestern word and it drove me crazy when I lived in Chicago when people said that. A Coca-Cola is Coke. That should not be the all inclusive term. They are soft drinks unless you are being specific like "I'll have a Sprite, Coke, Diet Pepsi..." and so on.
19i think the regional difference is unreal. i'm from buffalo where it is referrred to as pop, yet people from syracuse a couple hours away say Soda. i already posted earlier, but i can't believe the overwhelming use of the brand name Coke as a general term for all of it. when i was waitressing and someone ordered a coke they'd get a coca-cola. it's so weird. like i said, i find it easiest if you just say the actual name of what you want. especially if you are traveling!!!
20lisalove - I'm with you, I come from the Syracuse side of the Soda/Coke divide, but my Mom is from Buffalo, so she calls it Pop. Now I'm living in Atlanta, so everything is Coke down here!
21I say Pop, but I'm from England, so I suppose that doesn't really count.
22I had no idea they called it coke down south, I always assumed they called it pop down there. I've heard people call it pop or soda, and I'm a soda gal myself.
23In Alabama, it's coke. But it's a little more complex than just being a generic term here where I live. "Coke"/"Diet Coke" means whichever dark cola is served, "Sprite/"7-Up" means whichever clear drink is served, "Mt. Dew/MelloYello" means whichever yellow colored drink is served.
But Dr. Pepper is always asked for by name.
24Just as a carbonated beverage, soda, but Coke means any dark carbonated beverage! I'm from GA, it doesn't translate well to here in IL!
25In canada its pop...
26and we also call couches (sofas) chesterfields...does anywhere else do that??
i say coke.
27Soda.
28I'm from Canada & I always say pop.
29I say soft drink, unless I'm asking for something specific.
30But luckily I don't drink them anymore, so I don't really have to face the huge differences lol

I'm originally from Illinois, where it is pop. I lived in Wisconsin most of my life, where it is soda. Now, I live in Tennessee and it's coke. I still say pop, where I'm known as a Yankee.
31i was gonna say that super win! LOL
although WHY its called that i'll never know!
32i think i use all three, i am originally from ohio and i used to say coke or pop but now i am in the west and i think i call it soda more often than not
33Soda, for sure. I'm surprised by how much less of the country says that though...I always thought it was a few states that said "pop" and that was it!
34I've always wanted to call it pop, but people would look at me strangely here (in New Jersey), so I always call it soda.
35I love in the SF Bay Area and everyone I know calls it soda, but when I go to visit family on the East Coast they always call it pop.
36I've never posted before but this topic brought me out...I'm from Minneapolis and we call it Pop and only Pop...when I came home from college saying Soda my friends and family lost their minds when I would say Soda...they'd laugh and laugh because it sounds so 'geeky' to them - you gotta admit Pop is a cooler word than soda...soda is what you put in a cocktail - soda water = tonic water...growing up when they would say soda on t.v. shows we'd wonder why they were saying that!
And here in Minnesota we say Tennis Shoes (i.e."Where are my tennies" or "I love your new tenna shoes") when we are referring to what the rest of the coutnry calls Sneakers...I can't imagine ever saying Sneakers! LOL!
37In Boston it is called tonic. I've gotten used to using this, but confused as to what to ask for when I want actually tonic water, ie. Gin and Tonic. haha. soda is soda.
38I'm also from the South so it's Coke in our house.
39I also have heard 'soft drink' a lot.
40In South Africa they call is Cool Drink.
41SODA!
42soft drink? i like that word, pop!
43Coke.
44Soda.
45i've always called them soft drinks
46I snicker every time I hear someone call it pop. It just annoys the heck out of me! I'm so Southern.
47I use coke and soda interchangeably. Strangely, I never picked up "pop" even though I lived near Chicago for 10 years.
48It's ALL COKE!!
If I say I want a coke, you ask me what kind!
49Soda! Always soda! Coke is only Coca-Cola (and occasionally generic brand colas), and pop is a type of music. And "soda pop" is, as someone said, a bad Britney Spears song, and should be eliminated from the lexicon!
