Recently at Waterbar, here in San Francisco, I ordered the fish & chips. I was blown away when the waiter brought out an entire rock cod — eyes, fins and all! The fish was battered and deep-fried whole for my eating pleasure. I immediately began to dig in, but some of my friends sharing the gigantic entrée were a little more hesitant. How about you? Could you stomach this unique version of fish and chips?

That is absolutely grim! Unique but not touching my plate.
1poor fishy.
2It's not like your going to eat the eyes and all. Just cut off the head and enjoy.
3Nope I couldn't eat the fish like that.
4in order for me to eat it, someone would have to cut it for me so its not actually looking at me while im chewing on its insides
5When I studied abroad in Senegal, the first meal they plopped in front of us was fish still with its eyes and tail. It definitely startled us all a bit, but we got used to it.
6I know where I'm eating the next time I'm in San Francisco. That looks awesome, serving a whole fish like that is common outside of the U.S. I grew up with whole baked, grilled and fried mullet and cod. I never would have thought of modifying fish and chips like this, though.
YumSugar, what is your review of the entree other than the looks?
7I'd eat it, for sure, but the whole point of battered and fried cod is to get that delicious golden crust. By filleting the fish and battering each side, you get twice as much deep fried goodness, which seems lacking in that photo.
I serve fish with the head on all the time, mostly because I really can't be bothered to clean the things. Great stuff.
8gross! I'd never eat that fish! I'd eat the chips though.
9I can't eat anything if it still has eyes... :s
10I wouldn't eat the eyes or any fish innards that might still be in there, but I'd definitely eat the rest.
11well, I would try it if someone showed me how to eat it!
12I'd eat the chips, but I don't know if I could get past the fish eyes. I don't even like shrimp with the head on (though I've managed to get past the fact that crawfish still have heads.)
13fins and tail wouldn't bother me so much...it's eyes!
14I'm not a big seafood fan to begin with. I'm trying to incorporate some into my diet, but this is definitely not the way to go!
15aside from being a vegetarian - i refuse to eat anything that has a face - and seeing as how you can clearly identify each part of this fish - i woudln't go anywhere near it!
16EWW!! no, no no no no......i feel bad enouf as it is going fishing, watching them die a slow death while they are skinned and then eating them.....let alone having them stare at me while i rip out there eye balls....BLEH....im no vegetarian....but ......idk
17Id have to say no.
I dont do fins and innards, and wont do heads and eyes.
So, big fat no.
18fishy is frowning. probably cause he's all crispy.
I would never ever evveeerrr eat this. I'm all for eating fish, but not when it is looking at me.
19Staying away from the head and fins, I'd eat the fish. Definitely not the whole thing. How bad could the chips really be?
20How much does a plate like this cost?
YUMMM!!! I wouldn't even share!
cheers,
Angela
21Everyone the fish was divine, we did ask for the sauce on the side! So everyone could decide on their own smothering. If you are in the SF neighborhood, the waterbar is delicious!
22Defintiely. I LOVE WHOLE FISH.
23I wish I had been there with you Yum. It looks amazing.
24My hubby would eat all the bones, heads and fins etc, but he would have to tear the meaty flesh away from me. It looks delicious even if i would waste half of it.
25The chips but not the fish. It's not because of the eyes it's because I only it fillet fish now because I got choked on a fish bone when I was a child.
26That's horrific. I'd send it back and ask for the head to be cut off and then I still wouldnt eat it. They should warn you when a fish is going to come out with the head on with a dish that doesnt usually include head. Poo.
27how about we chop off a human head, batter it and deep fry it.
28Serve it on a platter, surrounded by frieds and coleslaw.
Ew
i've done it... it's tasty
29PUKE.
30The head doesn't bother me...it's the fact that it's still full of bones. I hate picking fish bones out of things.
31No way... I like to keep up the illusion of my food not being living things. Kinda can't do that when it's staring at you.
32My thoughts exactly deedoucette. I hate having to pick out bones, fat and the innards - other than that - YUMMERS.
33I would try it because I like to try everything before I decided I don't like it, but I would be upset that it wasn't mentioned on the menu that this is how it would be served....
34i would try it..
35My parents used fight for the eyes and fins when I was little. And one of my favorite memories and one of the things I love the most is having a whole fish. so yummy yummy in the tummy!!!
36I would PEE if someone served me this... especially if I'd had a beer or two,lol
37I'm ok with the eyes, but the fact that it tastes like fish would be a problem for me.
38I would devour this. I love the whole chili fish you can get at Thai restaurants.
39It's normal to eat fish that way in the Philippines.
40Nope - couldn't do it. Also, fish bones are scary to me so I kinda prefer to have a boneless filet.
41I would eat it. It's just a fish, gezz.. It's not like a cow head on the dish. >_>
The "absolutely not" option is funny. hahah
42I often joke that I never eat anything that didn't have a face, so I'm totally ok with this. In fact my fav sushi is Ama Ebi, at good places after they bring you the shrimp... they also bring you the shrimp head- battered and deep fried of course! I love it!
43That fish is going to give me nightmares.
44Oh yeah, I would totally eat that. Eaten waaaaaaay worse in Japan and the Philippines...
45I would dig in, eat the bones and all the fishy face parts. I am grown up enough to know that meat has a face, and most of the time its a delicacy and super yummy.
If anyone i knew actually freaked out after being served this, it would be the end of my friendship for sure.
46umm, barf!
47Heck no, I'm a vegetarian
