In order to be a wonderful home entertainer, you must learn how to make the classic drinks. The Martini, Cosmopolitan, and Margarita are popular drinks that highlight gin, vodka, and tequila respectively. It's good to know one basic cocktail for each of the five major liquors (gin, vodka, tequila, rum, and whiskey). Dating back to 1870, a Manhattan is the optimal whiskey drink. Take care when mixing this cocktail because it can be difficult at first to get the correct ration of whiskey to vermouth. Use a rye or bourbon whiskey for best results when making your guests this drink. Meant to be stirred rather than shaken a Manhattan is a wonderful before dinner drink that pairs nicely with salty appetizers. To see how it's done, read more

i have a silly question..whats the difference if you shake or stir a drink?
1Funny that you ask, Sarah, I was actually thinking of turning this into an article. There is much debate about when to shake vs when to stir while mixing a cocktail. The shaking action breaks up the ice and adds a little water to the drink and alters the taste slightly. Shaking also adds tiny air bubbles which can lead to a cloudy drink instead of a clear one. The rule that is generally followed (by me too!) is if the cocktail contains only spirits and/or clear ingredients, it should be stirred. If the drink contains juices, syrups, cream or egg whites, like a daiquiri, it should be shaken.
2thank you!
3I just saw an episode of sex and the city where they drink manhattans and i was about to look it up--thanks for reading my mind and saving me the search!
4my boyfriends grandparents always order this drink wherever they go its so cute
5LOVE THESE. This is my staple bar-drink-when-I-don't-have-a-craving-for-anything-else-drink.
My in-laws have a fantastic family recipe for Manhattans. They use a bit more bitters and a simple syrup. It alters the taste somewhat but oh man do they go down easy!!
6I always wondered what went into those.
7what a beautiful color
