At a recent restaurant outing, a friend and I ordered an appetizer that was an unusual (but not unheard of) combination of flavors: gruyère cheese and Fuji apples.
The combination of melted cheese and apples has always been a favorite of mine, and it made me ponder the other unusual pairings that I've loved in my lifetime. As a 5-year-old, I wrapped Kraft singles around my bananas. In college, my roommate got me hooked on canned tuna with cottage cheese. And these days, I enjoy chips in my sandwich.
I'd love to hear your confessions: What are the unusual (or even gross sounding) food combinations that appeal to you?

Bacon-and-peanut-butter sandwiches!
1Cheese and peanut butter sandwiches: it's the best! It's a double dose of fat + carbs.
2ooh, apples & gruyere cheese is not weird! it's delicious! ^-^ hmm, i know i eat some weird combos but i can't think of any right now.
3Lays potato chips and brownies, salty and sweet!
4I love dipping my french fries in a chocolate milkshake!
5ElleJay I was about to say that! They're the best in a Wendy's frosty, mmmmm.
As a kid I was hooked on peanut butter and honey sandwiches although I don't know if that's that weird.
6I'm a big fan of a peanut butter and dill pickle sandwich on wheat bread, yum!
7pan fish with syrup.
8Any kind of breakfast meat with syrup!
9In middle school I used to eat cold applesauce and dominoes pizza. Weird combination, I have no idea what started it. I guess it goes back to the cheese and apple combination.
10peanut butter and white cake icing! sugar + fat = yum!
11Pretzel sticks dipped in cream cheese.
12i always loved adding powdered lemonade mix/ powdered sweetened kool-aid to vanilla ice cream. It was the perfect combination of sweet, tangy and artificial coloring
13Mashed potatoes mixed with cottage cheese! =]
14Marionberry (or any jam) and bleu cheese on tasty crackers. Not all that weird but I love the salty/sweet thing. My trailmix is dried cranberries, pretzels (any salty nut/chips) and dark chocolate chips.
15JudeC, you completely took what I was going to say. I love peanut butter and bacon sandwiches. Mmmm...
16Aren't they the best, mjane?
17I like to mix mayonnaise, some ketchup and a little mustard together and dip my fries in it. I personally don't think it's weird but apparently some people do!
18Rice with sugar
19Chips mashed onto my sandwiches
Pickles eaten on top of chips
I grew up on grilled cheese sandwiches dipped in ketchup and peanut butter and dill pickle sandwiches. I still crave these sometimes and my friends think I'm nuts!
20Pizza with mangoes and cream
21waffles and cream cheese
22I love ketchup with almost everything. I don't eat any breakfast food without it.
23"Exotic tartare"!
24I used to eat apples with salt, and then graduated to apples with cheese. One of my favorite snacks of all time. I also put apples in ham and cheese sandwiches, but I've seen that at cafes before.
Not odd, but not very "American": Mayonnaise on my fries.
25As kids my brother and I LOVED hot dogs with peanut butter on them... sort of a twist on the bacon and PB that others have mentioned.
26I make potunas....you scoop out the insides of a baked potato, mix tuna, sour cream, mayo, red onion and shredded chedder...stuff it back in the potato and bake
not sure how odd that combo is, but it is one of my favs:)
27I like vallia milk shakes with french fries .
28fruit roll ups wrapped around pretzel rods are good (sweet, salty, crunchy and chewy)
29also, spicy ramen noodles with melted american cheese on top. yummy!
As anyone from Utah knows, fry sauce (!!!) is good on everything from fries to sandwiches to burgers to who knows what else. It's a delicious mix of ketchup, mayo, and sometimes various other odds and ends like relish or mustard.
30I love a grilled cheese with granny smith apples in it. Also love the chips in a pb and j. Also when they are nice and ripe cantaloupes in Caesar salads are wonderful. Literally anything with horseradish.
31I always put butter on chicken (my dad used to yell at me for it), and I love to scoop up vanilla pudding with pretzels.
32Gosh I have so many weird combos.
33I've always liked the salty sweet combo so I often eat chips with candy bars and such. My husband makes tuna sandwiches with cinammon on top which I thought would be gross but actually turned out quite well. My favorite combo far is crunchy chee-tos with tropical flavor DOTS candies. It's chewy and crucnhy salty and sweet and somehow comes out tasting just like pancakes and syrup. I knew a really sweet lady who once made me pancakes with creamed corn in them and they were fabulous.
My two favorite odd combinations are wheat thins with rainbow chip frosting(or nutella) and string cheese and raspberry jam.
34i've actually had the apples and cheese combo and it's nice - but the weird thing that i do which everyone finds to be gross is applesauce and ketchup. i think that it has to do with the sweet and sour mix - but it's a good thing for me, and i'll use it for a dipping sauce for french fries, or even just put it on a bun instead of meat ....(in place of a hot dog). i'm weird - i know!
35I LOVE grilled cheese with pickles in it.
36My fiancee loves cantalope with pepper on it!
And as a child, my sis and I use to love hard boiled eggs with soy sauce on them!
That's funny annebreal, i started with Mcdonalds fries and shakes!
37I also remember eating rice with sugar at my grandparents house all the time when i was younger.. and my husband got me hooked on dipping my grilled cheese sandwiches in tomato soup (or if you ask him, V8 when we're out of soup!)
Scrambled eggs with maple syrup...yum!
38My current fave is guava juice and goat cheese for breakfast (not blended together or anything, just taking a drink of the juice and then eating a slice of cheese).
Kazagirl - I thought I was the only one who liked sugar with my rice! I actually grew up eating rice with butter and sugar - and I still like it occasionally. I don't think this is any more odd than my husband liking yogurt and rice mixed together with a little mango pickle (which I also love), but the hubby and others love to make fun of me.
I also like my soup beans with sugar, and cheese with apples.
39Peanut butter sandwiches with a crispy piece of lettuce in it!
40Fries and shakes are good, but the best is Wendy's chicken nuggets in a Frosty. Fried and sweet is a good combo. I guess that's why people do those fried Oreos or fried candy bars - but the thought of those turn my stomach.
41I grew up eating warm rice with milk with cinnamon sugar and milk on it. My Asian boyfriend thinks this is sacrilege.
I used to like mashed potatoes mixed with salsa. Haven't tried that one in a while.
Weirdest ever was probably dipping carrots and broccoli in chocolate pudding.
42I'm going to sell out an old roommate of mine, but she'll probably never see it: she liked cottage cheese with mushrooms.
Personally, I like a slice of cheese on my egg salad sandwiches.
43Grilled ham and cheese with jelly on top- it's that whole sweet and savory thing I think.
44Hot dogs with cream cheese...yum.
45I second the hot dogs with cream cheese! A friend from Seattle got me hooked on that one. I don't know if it's a Seattle thing...
46Love dipping fries (and Nchicken nuggets) in Wendy's Frostys. I love cool ranch doritos crushed up in a turkey (or any meat really) sandwhich. Baked potato with BBQ sauce. Ranch dressing with Cheese pizza. I also love mixing sauces together, like ranch and bbq, or bbq and sweet and sour. Also, something I havent had in YEARS, crushed chocolate chip cookies btw 2 slices of white bread...yummy
47M&Ms and cool ranch doritos. and tortilla chips and cool whip.
48Yumsugar, I think it might be a Seattle thing...cause the only people who like it are those who live up here. I thought it was just a drunken thing...come out of the club buzzed and the hot dog vendor is there with the hot dogs with cream cheese and that's why it tastes so good. But I tried it sober, still good!
49A lot of these combinations are very intruiging-sounding! I might have to be adventurous and try some. I do the fried-and-frosty combo, I've heard of bacon-and-peanut-butter, and I looove cheese and jam - particularly brie and raspberry jam on crackers. Or a baked brie with a thin layer of jam baked inside! Last night I bought a bag of Kettle brand potato chips in "Cheddar and Beer" flavor - surprisingly yummy!
