I swooned when I came across Phasekitty's pictures of her mother's monkey bread. Eating this treat reminds me of hanging out with friends and family. There's nothing better than catching up on good conversation while picking apart pieces of the gooey bread. The best part? Licking the cinnamon sugar off your fingers.
Besides being a great breakfast, dessert, snack, and gift, monkey bread is great to make with kids. To get Phasekitty's family recipe, read more.

My mom.
When I was young my mom and I used to make this together on special occasions like Christmas morning and my birthday. It's amazing and perfect for breakfast or dessert. I was inspired to make it after SPM posted Paula Deen's take on it recently. It's very basic and super easy to make.
Ingredients
4 cans refrigerated biscuits
1 cup brown sugar
1 1/2 sticks butter (3/4 cup) (extra stick of butter optional)
1/2 cup sugar
2 tablespoons cinnamon
You can also add nuts or raisins or anything really, but I like mine pure and simple.
Grease a bundt pan well. Combine the white sugar and cinnamon in a ziploc bag. Open and separate your refrigerated biscuits and cut them into halves, then roll them into balls of dough. Put the dough balls in the bag of cinnamon and sugar and shake well to coat. Arrange them in layers around the bundt pan. If you're using any raisins or nuts, you can sprinkle them in between layers. If you have leftover cinnamon/sugar mix, set it aside. When you're done, they should look something similar to this:
I don't have a bundt pan, but I still suggest using one as more goo will be contained and won't spill out like a lot of mine did. No one likes wasted goo!
Put the brown sugar and butter in a small saucepan over medium to high heat. Stir until it's all incorporated, then let it boil for about a minute or so. Pour this ooey gooey liquid into your bundt pan all over them dough balls:
Right about now I'm wishing I had a bundt pan.
Toss it into the oven and bake it for about 35 minutes at 350 degrees.
Let cool for about 10 minutes, then flip it over onto a large plate. Let it sit flipped over for a few minutes to let all the ooey gooey goodness drip down. Now this part is optional, but if you like extra goo (and who doesn't like extra goo?) take that leftover cinnamon and sugar mix and put it into a saucepan with a stick of butter. Let it incorporate and boil for a minute or so and then pour it onto the final product.
I only used 1/2 a stick of butter for my extra goo and it didn't turn out as well - it carmelized a little bit on top - so don't be a doofus like me, toss that whole stick in there!
Pull apart with your fingers and chow down! This is really fun for kids. Careful, it's sticky!!

Mmmm...my fiance's mom makes this whenever we visit. Classic recipe.
1I have a similar recipe that I make using crescent rolls, butter, sugar, cinnamon, and caramel....this looks yummy
2I made these yesterday! My mom used to make them for both my sister me all the time as a kid.
3This is a Christmas morning tradition in my house.
4I have three young boys... something tells me we have an activity to do some afternoon this week!
5I love monkey bread. My mother likes to make a similar pull-apart bread for potlucks that consists of biscuits, butter, green onions, and bacon bits.
6Sooo good! Boy, the recipes this past week have sure been nostalgic!
7This reminds me of a ski trip I went on this past winter. Our host mum made us monkey bread for breakfast one morning. It was really sweet!
8I like the idea of a savory monkey bread!
9I've never even heard of this, but wow, it looks amazing!! This might be Sunday morning breakfast...
10I think I'll try making it with crescent dough. I saw some at the grocery store yesterday. Better than nothing.
11Thanks for posting this, Yum!
Aw Finn, I think we'll all have to start importing refrigerated biscuit dough to you
12Wow, I completely forgot about this recipe. Looks like I'll be making this over the weekend! Thanks!
13I actually just heard of this a few weeks ago. Yes, my mom never made this. But she would love it.
14oh my goodness - my stomach just growled sooo loud! that looks amazing and i don't even eat sweets or bread - but i think that i'm going to have to make the concession for this one cause that's too good to pass up.
15oooooh, I love monkey bread. I think I'll make this next week while I'm at the BEEEEAAAACCCCHHHH!!
16This looks fantastic!
I'd love to make it but I have no idea what I would use instead of the refrigerated biscuits? I live in Ireland, so if some one could suggest an alternative that would be great!
sara
17mm this looks delicious!!
18omg this looks to die for good. and like only 20,000 calories in the whole thing
i'm totally making this soon!
19My mother in law makes this - it is so sweet I can't stomach it and always get sick from it, but my husband loves it.
20YUUUUMMMMMM!!! I'll make it right the way! thanks!
21a question: a substitute for the refrigerated biscuits?
thanks
22I'll be making this Christmas morning for sure!
23At first I thought it was going to involve bananas, but this looks even easier!
24My husband was just asking me to make him Monkey Bread. Never heard of it before so thanks for the recipe.
25mmm i haven't had this in a while. might have to try this soon!
26Is there an equivalent recipe with slightly healthier ingredients? The idea of prepackaged biscuit dough makes me slightly ill.
27Haha I love the picture of the ingredients - yay Ralphs brand everything! I'll have to try this recipe - I've never had it!! It looks yummmyyyyy...
28Yup, my mom has made this before! It's SO bad for you!
29I love monkeybread, i first made it in cooking class in middle school and it was my speciality during high school but i made it the long way by making the dough from scratch and it was yeast risen dough not a quick bread like the biscuit dough used here so Sara20478 i think that you could easily substitute the biscuit dough or make it yourself with this simple recipe
1 1/2 yeast cakes or 2 pkg. dry yeast
1 c. milk heated to lukewarm
4 tbsp. sugar
1 tsp. salt
1/2 c. melted butter
3 1/2 c. sifted flour (about)
Dissolve yeast in lukewarm milk. Stir in sugar, salt and butter. Add flour; beat well. Let rise to almost double in bulk. Punch down and roll out on lightly floured board to 1/4 inch thickness cut in about 2 inch round pieces.
hope that helps!
30Molambert - thank you very much for that! I'll be trying that this weekend now
31Molambert - thank you very much for that! I'll be trying that this weekend now
32So we make this too but we put a hershey kiss inside each one and call it Good Morning Kisses Coffeecake. It is OH SO good! Of course it's fattening which is why it's a treat and not something you eat everyday but boy is it good!!
33Mmmm...looks so good. Fresh out of the oven is the best.
34THANK YOU so much for posting this recipe! I saw PD's take on TV about a month ago and my mouth was watering. I'm definitely going to send this to all my girlfriends.
35OH. MY. GOD. I love monkey bread! I had totally forgotten about this. Must make soon!
36I made this twice over the weekend, after seeing this recipe on YumSugar. First attempt was okay, I had bought 4 biscuit cans and I really only needed 3. Too much dough, the goo oozed out everywhere and the balls kept falling off and the underneath wasn't baking. After all this, was really over it, so didn't even make the glaze, but turned out okay. Made it again Sunday, so goooooood! Used 3 cans and made the glaze. Probably took longer than 35 minutes, more like 45, wanted to make sure it was baked all the way through. Put the glaze on top and everyone ate it straight out of the oven, so heavenly! Would recommend for holidays or a special breakfast treat. Once you make it once, pretty easy to remember the recipe and has simple ingredients. I give it 4 stars! Also, I used a bundt pan and looked way better than in the pics.
37I make this anytime I'm making chicken pot pies and have just a little dough left over. I don't use the butter. You don't really need it if you don't make the glaze. I just coat the dough balls in cinnamon and sugar, throw them in a little dish and let them bake while I make the rest of dinner. 3 ingredients! So easy and a delicious little dessert
