Recently, my parents returned from a vacation in Ireland.
Being as it was their first time in on the island, they eagerly sampled the local products, pubs, and pints. They picked up a fondness for a chocolate-colored, Irish ale named Smithwick’s (pronounced Smitiks). Their rave reviews made me curious, so when my dad invited me to join him at a local Irish pub, I jumped at the chance to taste the brew. Despite its dark color, the beer was surprisingly light and refreshing. The rich liquid was not bitter, but smooth, full, and stimulating. According to my father, the American Smithwick's lacked the frothy head of the brew he enjoyed in the old country, but I didn't mind, I thought it was delicious.
Have you ever tried Smithwick's? What do you think of the beer?

1Mmmm...Smithwick's is an old stand-by in my circle. Delish! We also really like Boddington (great British pub ale) and Lion Stout is my husband's favorite stout EVER - and he's a HUGE stout lover.
2Hey, that is my favorite imported beer. If you have been "afraid" of dark beers, you will be pleasantly surprised by this.

4My husband LOVES this stuff, as well as Guinness. I prefer a crisp Magner's cider.
5It's like an even yummier smoother Newcastle. I ALWAYS get it if its on tap somewhere.
6when i was in ireland i felt the need to sample a lot of what they had and i don't think that i came across this one - but if you say that it's lighter than you'd think - then maybe i'll try it when i go to an irish pub next time. i'm always looking for something new and different to drink - but my preference is always in a lighter pale ale type thing.
7o its yummy- def lighter than guinness or other dark beers- but still heavy enough if you like a darker beer. of course all irish beers are better in ireland (or even in london for that matter) but its still good over here- and you can get it a surprising number of places on tap now!

9Thank you so much for enlightening everyone on the correct pronounciation! We didn't learn it until we went to Ireland in '06. We also learned that it tastes SO much better on tap (and in IRL) than the bottles you get here in the states. It's ok on tap over here, but still not the same.
