My friends and I often debate this very question. Does the almost universally loved category of sandwich include hamburgers? In many ways, the hamburger has transcended the definition of sandwich; if you are craving a burger, you probably wouldn't say, "I really want a sandwich." But I guess technically, it's still a sandwich. What do you think?

I think a hamburger is it's own entity.
1sand·wich
–noun 1. two or more slices of bread or the like with a layer of meat, fish, cheese, etc., between each pair.
ham·burg·er
2–noun 1. a sandwich consisting of a cooked patty of ground or chopped beef, usually in a roll or bun, variously garnished.
oh, the definitions were from dictionary.com
3i think of hamburger in its own little world...
4i think "burger" is just a subset of sandwich.
although i'm not sure anyone says "i could go for a sandwich" without thinking of something more specific than "anything between two slices of bread at any temperature."
5Burger is in its own lil world. IMHO it's not a sandwich. But both look good right now
6Well on menus its usually in the sandwich section so yes I consider it a sandwich.
7It's a sandwich in my book. I won't call it that when I refer to it in everyday convo, but that's what it technically is.
8By Definition, sandwich.
AND I do believe that at most restaurants if they serve a selection of burgers, they have a burger section on the menu, And the other is hot and cold sandwiches.
9Does anyone really call it a hamburger anymore? There are so many variations, I never say hamburger, just burger. And no it's not a sandwich to me.
10I agree with Party. A burger is a burger!
11Although I get that it is kind of a sandwich, I don't think of burgers when someone says sandwich.
i really don't care, just as long as it tastes good!
12Technically, yes it's a sandwhich, but it's kinda evolved and it's its own thing.
13I would gladly pay you Tuesday for a Hamburger today...

i guess there could be a bit of debate about this one - but to me, i would say it's a hamburger. it's kind of become it's own thing and regardless of the bread you put it on - it's still going to be that in my eyes.
15Technically, the term "hamburger" is derived from the term "Hamburg Steak", which is solely the meat patty. So what you've got up at the top of the page is: on the right, a ham sandwich, and on the left, a double-decker hamburger sandwich.
I don't know what I've proven though, because while I could use that knowledge to say that what the vernacular calls a "hamburger" (ie. a hamburg steak sandwich) _is_ a sandwich, I could make a very convincing argument that the word "hamburger" refers neither to a sandwich nor indeed to a hamburg steak sandwich.
...or am I overthinking this one?
16I think hamburgers are different...when I think of eating a sandwich, I think of ham, cheese, turkey, etc. Burgers are different...and yummy!
17Who cares? I just like to eat.
18technically yes!!
19and sometimes say here.."I want a burger sandwich" oh yeah!
lol damn I'm hungry now..tho I don't like hamburguer
i just like the pictures for the burger and sandwich
