Recently I was making dark-chocolate raspberry ice cream. A friend was over and he was desperate to help. Always one to encourage cooking, I told him to prepare the raspberries. Before adding the sugar to the pan, he held up the quarter-cup and asked me for permission to add it to the saute pan. However, his cup was filled with rock salt! Luckily, our disaster was averted, but replacing sugar with rock salt is a serious error that would make the dish inedible.
We all make mistakes, especially when new to the kitchen, so everyone should have something to share. Fess up: from burnt cookies to boiled-over pots, what ended up in the trash instead of on the table?

I tried to make cinnamon bread last weekend. The recipe called for 2 packets of instant vanilla pudding and 2 cups of flour. I was side-tracked by the kids and totally forgot the flour. The bread still looked undone after more than an hour of cooking and finally I realized what happened. Nothing I can do, I have to start another batch.
1Even experienced cooks make mistakes. A couple of weeks ago I made a 16 quart stock pot of chicken soup using most of a roasted chicken. I made the soup on Friday and it was delicious. However, I managed to forget to put it away that night. The next day I had about 30 people over for a BBQ and, again, forgot all about the soup still sitting on the stove. Sunday, as I sat in my office and my husband was in the shower, one of my cats must have climbed onto the stove and bumped the lid on the pot. The odor that escaped was the most putrid thing I have ever smelled. From behind the closed bathroom door my husband shouted, "WHAT DID YOU JUST DO!" I was frantically searching the house for what I could only assume was cat vomit. When I finally realized what it was we put the pot outside to air out the house. I'm not lying when I say that the smell managed to stink up half of the neighborhood!
2i feel like that happened on an episode of top chef when they used salt instead of sugar or vice versa.
i think for me, my mom always used to make frosting from scratch and we had this recipe down pat. well my friend and i were having a sleepover at her house and decided to make it ourselves, yet when the recipe called for 1/2 of milk, we put in 2 cups and couldn't figure out why it wasn't getting creamy like usual....i called my mom and she started laughing at me since she realized what we did.
suffice it to say - we just went out and bought a container of premade frosting to save the trouble.
3Worst kitchen catastrophe has to be letting a new wok get so hot that the oil ignited in flames as soon as it touched the pan. Really huge and smelly flames. I put the lid on the pan and had took the pan out on to the deck. Smoke alarms went off and the house smelled like burnt oil for a couple of weeks. Oh, and I was cooking for my date.
4Oh I've had a few-
undercooked turkey on christmas
inedible dish with raddiccio that must have been rotten
caught cookies on fire
5adding a TABLE SPOON of baking soda or powder instead of a TEASPOON will cause your cake to overflow and ruin your stove ):
and super moist fried rice ): *sigh
6Mistake? In the kitchen? I'm sorry, I'm unfamiliar with that term.
7Ha! I always make mistakes, no matter how much I cook. I usually skip steps in recipes, leaving out very vital ingredients (I've done the teaspoon to tablespoon, sugar to salt). And last year I lived in a rental with a very bad stove, and everything I cooked was burnt! My poor husband. The sad thing is, I consider myself a very good cook and do a lot of it, its just if anyone is in the kitchen with me, I talk and get completely distracted!
8I can't remember any cooking disasters off hand right now, but I'm sure there are a few. But kitchen mistakes, I have a ton of. The best/worst one was that I had put a glass bowl on top of a burner on the stove in our old apartment, because there was no room in the sink. My husband came along and accidentally turned on the wrong burner when he was trying to heat up a tortilla on the stove. He turned on the burner under that glass bowl. When the bowl cooled after being heated, we heard some cracking and then the bowl exploded! Luckily we weren't hurt, but I was still cleaning up broken glass when we moved out of that apartment, years later!
9I love pad thai, but since I can't afford going to a Thai restaurant on a regular basis, I decided to try making it myself. I got a recipe off the internet, and even though I *thought* I was following every step, the noodles turned out mushy and sticky, and the sauce was way too sour. I tried to eat it anyway because I hate wasting food, but I gave up after a few mouthfuls and threw the rest away.
10In middle school i wanted to make my mom a chocolate bundt cake, so i did and it smelled okay, she bit into it and made a funny face and said "sweetie what kind of oil did you use?" and i pointed to it and she said "thats olive oil!" it was so nasty.
11I have a chocolate, peanut butter oatmeal cookie recipe that I love. It calls for quick-cooking oats, but one time I accidentally bought slow-cooking oats...the cookies were chewy and dry...a weird combination!
12I have messed up codfish stew more than once. I can never get as much salt out of the cod as I want to so it ends up being this gross block of salt. Once or twice its been edible but not by much. I'll keep trying though.
13I badly burnt a batch of cookies. When my dad called them a "failure" and told me to throw them away, tears welled up in my eyes.
Another time I was hosting a Spanish themed dinner party and was making tortilla. When I tried to "dar la vuelta" (flip it over) to finish cooking it ended up all over the kitchen sink. No matter, I told my guests that this dish was another Spanish specialty, a revuelto!
14Nothing like not paying attention when cooking on the BBQ. At least a couple times a year I will over cook a steak.
15When i was in college I wanted to make a special treat for my boyfriend so I decided to make a cheesecake from stratch for the first time. It turned out beautifully, but when transferring it to the refrigerator to cool I DROPPED IT and it went all over the floor. Between all the work that when into and the fact that i spent my small college student budget for the week on the indgredients I was devasted!! I even took pictures of the mess b/c I couldn't let there be nothing to show for my work!!
16I decided one night to make my fiance vegetables over Uncle Ben's Teriyaki rice. I thought the rice might not have enough flavor so I marinated the veggies in teriyaki sauce for hours. the meal was so teriyaki-ed I wanted to barf. It was disgusting but my fiance ate it! No wonder I am marrying him!
17In my high school cooking class we had a day where we were making muffins and being a little dyslexic I switched the salt/sugar. The listed sugar amt was right above the salt amt anf they were both 1/4 measurments only the salt said 't' and the sugar said 'c'. I realized my mistake of course as soon as I dumped the 1/4 cup of salt in. My group and I tried to take out as much of it as we could, but those muffins were hard as rocks. You literally could have broken a window with one. Oops.
18I made brownies from scratch once that were so incredibly dry, they literally absorbed all the moisture in my and my boyfriend's mouths! It was seriously a scientific mystery - surely they couldn't absorb that much moisture for being so small. We decided that they might be good for flood catastrophes, or space food (just add water?). With no floods or astronauts to be found, I ditched them. I should try the recipe again to see if it was just faulty ingredients, or a misread on my part.
19When I was about 11 or 12 I convinced my grandparents to let me make chocolate brownies for dessert all by myself. I wasn't too good at following recipes yet so when the recipe called for 1½ cups of flour I thought it said 11½ cups of flour. It was such a disaster. We had to throw the pan out with the concrete brownies cause it just would not come out. I still get teased to this day haha
20My first attempt at baking, I mistook a tbsp of baking soda for a tsp. Holy jebus that cake was horrible tasting. It has scarred me for life and to this day I'm still cautious about how much I put in.
21I was using a one of those no-cook lemonade pies made with frozen lemonade concentrate in a language lesson (teaching the class the use of imperative by following recipe instructions, like "Pour the lemonade into a bowl" and that kind of thing). I made what is probably a shopping error rather than a cooking error . . . I grabbed the concentrate with a yellow fruit on it at the store, and it wasn't until my students started asking me how to say "grapefruit" that I realized what the yellow fruit was. Unsweetened grapefruit juice concentrate mixed, cool whip, and sweetened condensed milk in a graham cracker crust . . . The poor kids ate it anyway, because they didn't want me to feel bad, but you have never seen such a class full of puckered faces.
22A few weeks ago, I had to have a repair man in to deal with a schitzo garbage disposal. I had gotten behind with my dish washing, so I did the logical thing....I stuffed the oven with plates, bowls, pots and pans. By dinner time the following day, the disposal had been repaired, and I was thinking about that nice filet of fish that I had picked up at the market. I fired up the oven, and stepped outside to take a phone call. Ten minutes later, I returned to the kitchen, which was billowing with smoke. Seems that Tupperware is not meant for the oven.
23In college, my friends and I decided to host a Mardi Gras party. We made a gumbo that was really good, but we intended to pair it with devil's food cupcakes. Being in college (and pretty broke) we didn't want to buy a carton of eggs just to let them ruin, so we tried making them without eggs. (I know, I know!)
24They were incredibly dense and never quite baked through. The tops burned, but once that peeled off, the insides were actually like incredibly gooey brownies.
I've never had anything yet...but my father was making soft shell crabs and used powder sugar instead of flour...we still make fun of him
25One time I stupidly poured hot melted chocolate into whipped cream and melted it. I can't remember ever being so disappointed.
26I tried to make some hardboiled eggs after having a few drinks, passed out while waiting for them, and woke up to the sound of them exploding... all the water had boiled off and there were bits of hardboiled egg all over my kitchen...
oops.
