Part French toast, part ham and cheese sandwich, the classic Monte Cristo Sandwich is an excellent quick dinner dish that will use the last bit of leftover Easter ham. A sweetly glazed ham is paired with swiss cheese in this Americanized version of the ultimate French ham and cheese sandwich, the croque monsieur. Since it's Wednesday night and we do sandwiches at my house on Wednesdays I thought this would be a taste treat. The origin of the name of this sandwich is unclear and debatable. For a heartier meal pair with a green salad, or a bowl of your favorite store bought tomato soup. I like mine alone with a bag of crinkle cut potato chips. For the recipe, read more

Monte Cristo Sandwich
From Everyday Food magazine

Dijon mustard
8 slices country bread
Swiss cheese slices
sweetly-glazed Ham
4 large eggs
1/2 Cup milk
1 Teaspoon salt
1/2 Teaspoon pepper
1/4 Teaspoon ground nutmeg
4 Tablespoons butter
Confectioners’ sugar

  1. Spread mustard on bread. Layer 4 bread slices with Swiss cheese, ham, and cheese again. Place remaining bread slices on top.
  2. In a shallow dish, whisk together eggs, milk, salt, pepper, and nutmeg. Dip each sandwich in the egg mixture, turning to coat well.
  3. In a large skillet, melt butter over medium-low heat. When butter is foamy, add the sandwiches, and cook, turning once, until golden brown on both sides, 6 to 8 minutes total. Serve immediately, dusted with confectioners’ sugar.

Serves 4.

I hvae had something similar at a tea house near my parents. They call theirs a mock monte cristo ebcause they try to make it healthier by making it a panini instead of using french toast.

Also, At the Wild Horse Saloon in Nashville, Tennessee, they deep fry theirs...it is DELISH. Then you get the raspberry sauce to dip it in....Drool serioulsy delish.

These are sooooo good. But I'm always wary of ordering b/c in the past, I've had Monte Cristos that are too soggy by the time they reach my table. My family improvises and does ham and turkey and cheese baked between layers of Pillsbury crescent rolls. Dee-lish!

Not a swiss cheese fan! Are there others that could fill in instead?

Gureye is a milder swiss cheese that would pair nicly but you could also use white cheddar or fontina.

i'm so excited to try this! the only recipes i have ever found needed a deep fryer, so this looks like it's right up my alley.

Wow this sounds soo good! Probably not good if you're watching your calories, but definitely a good comfort food.

There used to be a bar called Bennigans in a nearby town that served great monte cristos. Unfortch it is now closed and I would be scared to try them on my own. I think they would come out mushy.

Oh I've had it from Bennigans! I'm not such a fan of this, but the hubs l-o-v-e-s it. I might just try this for him.

Is there typically a certain jelly that's served with it? Or is up to whatever you want?

So, so tasty. I hate soggy Monte Cristos though, then they're just gross.

Layla, I think it is normally served with raspberry jam, but I guess you can serve it with whatever you want. I think orange marmelade would be good.
