The other day one of my sister's friends stopped by with a bouquet of pretty pink flowers from her garden. They were ranunculus (pronounced ran-UN-kew-lus) a small camellialike bloom that ranges in color from red to yellow to pink and white and grows here in the Western United States during springtime. Wildly popular, there are over 400 different species.
When planting ranunculus, monitor the soil's moisture and handpick away slugs and snails. These bulbs grow in full sun to partial shade, spread naturally, and do best with cool night temperatures and slightly warmer days. When cut, a ranunculus can last over a week, making them an ideal choice for a bride's bouquet, a wedding centerpiece, or a mailed gift. They combine well with pansies, sweet alyssum, and other early spring blooming flowers.

they are so pretty, great colors!
1oh my god, I can't tell you how excited I am to see this post. The ranunculus has been my favorite flower for years. I love the way it looks and the fact that the name sounds more like a disease.
2Those are gorgeous! I can't wait to see more flower posts - they brighten my day!
3my sister is using these in her wedding! so great to see a post on it!.
4What an interesting flower!
5hmm, am i weird? cos i just dont seem to like flowers all that much. very un-girly i know. lol
6mandiesoh - not too weird, i know a few people like that. for me it has to be the right kind of flower. i like to have fresh cut ones in the house and i planted a bunch of tulip bulbs this year. i really can't stand roses and i hate carnations, but tulips are so lovely and i'm realling digging on these ranunculus too.
7I've always been nuts for foxglove, personally, but it's in the digitalis family and my dogs eat everything I plant. Dangerous combo. These are pretty. I wonder if they're poisonous? I need to find something that tastes really bad and isn't toxic.
