Ladies and Gents, were you as disappointed in the Food Network Awards as I was? For having all those big personalities, it was pretty darn dull, don't you think? This picture of Paula pretty much says it all. I had it on in the background, otherwise I don't know if I could have sat through the whole thing. Although, I must say, as much as I was dulled-to-death by it, I was not nearly as irritated as our pal Anthony Bourdain.

The production itself--above and beyond the witless, ill-considered, just-plain stupid "concept" of an Awards show where most of the "awards" went to inanimate objects (accepting the award for Best Comfort Food is...Macaroni and Cheese!!), appliances or cities (Portland's mayor wisely did not bother to show),--the production values--were lower than whale shit. The food styling during the "Best New Appliance" looked like some kind of 1960's themed monkey effluence, dying, soggy, butt-ugly.
And yes, I know, Bourdain's "I totally hate on Food TV" schtick is a little off-putting and old-hat to some, however I still love every scathing word of it.
Did you watch it? What did you think? Tell me about it in the comments! Oh and did anyone else notice that they used the same music that Top Model uses??
And finally, if you want to know who won the metal cake statuettes (even though most of the recipients are inanimate objects), or see more red carpet imagesread more

- Viewer's Choice: Best Ball Park Eats - Citizens Bank Park (Philadelphia)
- Viewer's Choice: Kitchen Appliance You Can't Live Without - Microwave
- Viewer's Choice: Fave Cool & Classic Cocktail - actually, I missed this one... anyone know? My guess is going to be be Margarita (choices were margarita, mojito, daiquiri & martini)
- Share our Strength Humanitarian of the Year - Floyd Cardoz of Tabla (I must say this was the one interesting, if not totally different, part of the show. Floyd seemed genuinely touched)
- Food Network Hall of Fame - Julia Child
- Culinary Dream Come True - Matthew Finkel (and I thought it was also interesting how they made him think it was a competition, even though he was the only candidate. I also loved how Alton started to let his true feeling for the giant metal cake statuette slip through)
And that folks, was honestly a waste of my time... I wonder what they'll do differently next year, because you know there's going to be a next year...

Favorite kitchen appliance? You're kidding me...Not that I don't love the microwave, but geez...
1OMG I CAN'T BELIEVE THE CALIFORNIA RAISENS ARE IN THAT PIC!!!! Does anyone else remember them?
"i heard it through the grape vine'

Why don't you wear the face you have when I am not around?
just an update, I found the press release and it looks like I was right - it was the margarita that won for favorite cool & classic cocktail.
3is that catherine zeta jones?!? what's she doing there?
4She was pimping her new upcoming film, "No Reservations" where she plays a chef. It's a remake of the German film "Mostly Martha"
5I do remember the California Raisins! Now I'm singing =]
6I watched the first two awards. The production values were truly dreadful.
The only highlight was that I felt that the banter between the presenters was actually better than other award shows featuring performers. The mix of product placement with the plushies on the red carpet was one of the oddest things I've seen in a long time. Of course it's not like the Tonys aren't a big long commercial for Broadway.
I don't plan on watching it again.
7i love those california raisins!
8I watched and I was disappointed too. The show following it about diners was much more entertaining.
9That Liz Hickok is AMAZING. Those Jell-O creations are... WOW.
10I have a weird crush on Anthony Bourdain. I totally agree with him on a lot of things.
11I love Anthony Bourdain too, but I am getting tired of his rants on the Food Network. I know the network is awful, so I don't watch this stuff, and I don't get mad. Easy as that.
12hehe im a teeny wee bit happy it tanked cos i didnt get to watch it over here. im
i knw
13I was there.
It was beyond bad. People were falling asleep. Walking out in droves. Even during the humanitarian award.
So much so, I had to tag them:

I didn't even know it was happening (telling, no?), but I'm sure I'd agree with Anthony's assesments. The food Network is Tired, and even the catagories of the award show just sound... sad.
15The award show was horrible , I shut it off I though they were going to honor people on the network and things , not grocery stores . I do like watching the food network otherwise. The food network may be boring to some professional chefs ,bakers etc. but I think most non professional watchers(who its aimed at) find some of the stuff entertaining. I personally enjoy Good eats, unwrapped, Paula Dean - and her sons. But there problem is they do show repeats to much.
16Jeff - I love your recap it is so hysterical! The end is the best part. Kudos to you for sticking around.
17tify - Good Eats is a great one! I love watching some of the shows like Food Finds and that sort of regional stuff as well.
Jeff - You're hilarious! I love this line: Apparently, Mrs. Butterworth was in rehab. I'm still laughing!
