Dunkin' Donuts One-Ups Starbucks With New Special

Responding to the economic hardship, breakfast chain Dunkin' Donuts has come out with its version of a recession deal.

Beginning today, small hot and iced lattes will cost only 99 cents from 2 to 5 p.m. The new special, dubbed "America's Latte Break," is the doughnut chain's response to the Starbucks $2 afternoon coffee deal that ended last month. The restaurants will also offer a 99 cent Egg and Cheese Sandwich — all day long — with the purchase of a medium or larger hot coffee. Both specials will run through Nov. 11.

What do you think of "America's Latte Break"? Will it edge out the competition? Will you visit Dunkin' Donuts for afternoon coffee over Starbucks?

I wish Starbucks and Dunkin Donuts would form an alliance. I like Starbucks coffee better, but would definitely drink it down with a french cruller from DD Drool

it's a good move to drive up afternoon traffic. I don't think I'd ever go, but if I were in the mood for coffee, I would consider it.

I don't like their sandwiches though. The one by me uses frozen fillings and microwaves it...right in front of you. No thanks.

I like those new flat bread sandwiches and I just realized I like their skim lattes. I might have to stop over there tomorrow.

Every Saturday before work I get an egg white flatbread sandwich and vanilla chai. Super yummy. But last week, the chai was only half full when I got it, so I had to add milk. It still tasted great, but it's the principle of the thing.

I think those sandwiches look freakin awesome! I live in a really small town with no DD anywhere close though. As for the whole 'recession deal' thing, I guess you have to start somewhere....But I dont think that discounting ONE not necessarily vital item (coffee) during hours when most Americans are at work, is that admirable of a deal, to be honest.

it's interesting to me that they are doign this - but a smart move none the less, since a small at DD is larger than a grande at Sbucks. if there wasn't a starbucks in my office - then i would look to go to DD, but i'm too lazy Sad i know - that's bad. lately though i've just gotten my iced green tea in the AM and that's held me over all day. i'll just refill with water to save on the pocket book and on the calories.

I love Dunkin coffee. It's the best there is. Starbucks coffee is so bitter. It tastes like tar. That said, I love Starbucks lattes when I have some money to spend on them...

Booooo! How do we get DD to come to California? No, their ground coffee on the store shelf is NOT the same! I protest heartily and vociferously! Boooo!

Poor Starbucks - they just try and try but always get done in by MacDonalds' or Dunkin' Donuts.

Here in Tokyo, Starbucks is pretty much THE coffee joint to get your cuppa and the cafe grub is pretty nice too. The other chains just don't have good espresso coffee with low-fat milk. Crazy, eh?

I live in the biggest city in my state and see the commercials for this all the time. However, in a search on Dunkin' Donut's site, there is not a DD within 50 miles of me. Wonder what their location strategy is for their stores?

Uhm, I don't really see it as competition because there's a Starbucks EVERYWHERE. I don't even know where the closest Dunkin' Donuts is to where I live, where I work, nor where I go to school.

DD is closer than Starbucks for me (although Starbucks is my preference) I'd definitely take advantage of it!
