I know some of you secretly love reading my fun facts as much as I do writing them (and acting like a know it all at parties telling people them), so I thought I'd give you a double dosing this week. I believe more and more importance should be placed on Earth Day every year so it's totally worthy of its own set of fabulous fun facts. Did you know that in some elementary schools, after Halloween and Christmas, Earth Day is the third largest celebrated holiday? Or how about that it is now observed in 175 countries and is the largest secular modern day holiday in the world? For more fun facts and to learn how much energy you save when you recycle one aluminum can, read more
- Recycling one aluminum can saves enough energy to watch a TV for three hours - it's equivalent to half a gallon of gasoline.
- Earth Day is a relatively new holiday and was first celebrated on April 22 in 1970. More than 20 million Americans participated in this first Earth Day celebration
- Earth Day was founded by a senator of Wisconsin and the day is credited for creating the environmentalism movement.
- April 22 is the first official day of Spring in the Northern hemisphere and of Fall in the Southern hemisphere and was chosen to be Earth Day for this reason.
- Never underestimate the importance of recycling: if every newspaper was recycled, we could save about 250,000,000 trees each year. Unfortunately only 27% of all American newspapers are recycled.
- More than 20,000,000 Hershey's Kisses are wrapped each day, using 133 square miles of tinfoil. All that foil is recyclable, but not many people realize it.
- Only 11% of the earth's surface is used to grow food.
- The world's first national park was started in 1872 at Yellowstone National Park in the US.
- The first major international conference on environmental issues was held in Sweden in 1972 and was sponsored by the United Nations.
- The first wildlife refuge was formed on Pelican Island Florida in 1903.
- The patron Saint of ecologists is St. Francis and the first proclamation of Earth Day was made by the mayor of San Francisco in 1970.
- A highlight of the annual Earth Day ceremony at the United Nations is the ringing of the Peace Bell that was given to the UN by Japan. It is made from coins given by school children to further peace on our planet.
Happy Earth Day!

im amazed! thanks for the info party.
1I am a die hard recycler...so people look at me like I'm silly but I it just feels right.
2its not silly chancleta! i wish i was more conscious!
3im amazed at the can recycling! wow!
4...too bad they dont recycle much here where I live
5We send all our newspaper for recycling! And I'm lugging all the newspaper we have at home to school now - the class with the most kg of newspapers, old clothes, old books... gets class points!
We don't celebrate Earth Day here though. Sad. Only 3% of our land is used for farming, I think. But it's hi-tech farming so it's high yield.
6I am amazed at this.
7home depot is giving away a free energy saving light bulb to each customer today.

I'd never thought about the Hershey Kiss thing! What a great idea! Have to remember that around Christmas cookie time...
9Happy Earth Day!!! I love recycling and all my coworkers think I am nuts. I reuse EVERYTHING! Recycling is fun!
10Happy Earth Day!
Great Facts - definitely eye openers! Thanks for sharing!
11GREAT view of FL btw!
12what's sad is that the Body Shop (where I work part time) did nothing for earth day. Supposedly, the store is reknown for its environmental ethics, but we did absolutely nothing! It wasn't even mentioned in our daily fax from corporate!
Anyway, enough venting - this is my favourite holiday! The redwood tree I planted at the park by my house when I was in forth grade on earth day many moons ago is still going strong!
And, I love the stronger emphasis on environmental ethics that we experience each year.
13we should all help save the earth together each day I recycle stuff all the time and then go and get money for doing that little good thing one day at a time GOD LOVES THE EARTH SO SHOULD WE
14Thanx for sharing the love of the world!!!

16Love the fact that you wrote about Earth Day, but you do have several errors in your “facts”.
Thanks for listing so many useful recycling facts. They are very interesting.
But, I would like to point out that April 22nd is NOT the first day of spring (and fall in the southern hemisphere.) Spring (and fall) start at the vernal equinox, which is on March 20th or 21st each year. http://www.britannica.com/EBchecked/topic/561288/spring
However, sometimes the UN does celebrate earth day at the vernal equinox. Other times the UN ignores Earth Day and yet other times they recognize it as April 22nd. In the USA, where the day was started, it's always been April 22nd. http://www.un.org/search/ (Search for Earth Day and you’ll see what I mean.)
The Peace bell, was indeed given to the UN by Japan but has been rung on the first day of spring, March 21st, since it was given to the UN in 1954, not just for Earth Day. It is also rung on the first day of fall, September 21st, which is the opening day of the UN fall session each year. http://www.un.org/pubs/cyberschoolbus/untour/subjap.htm
Earth Day was invented by Senator Gaylord Nelson of Wisconsin, who later became the president of the Wilderness Society. Senator Nelson is the one who spearheaded the whole thing - coming up with the idea and announcing it at a conference in September, 1969, selecting the date for the first Earth Day of April 22, 1970, writing to every single college newspaper in the USA, writing to every governor, publicizing the event in Scholastic publications, etc. From the start, Senator Nelson envisioned the day as a "teach-in" to teach about environmental awareness. 20 million Americans participated in the first Earth Day, and it's because of Senator Nelson's ideas and efforts, not those of others who would like to take credit.
The mayor of San Francisco did proclaim Earth Day for his own city on March 21, 1970, but he did not invent it nor was it his idea. This event in SF was a “street party” and not an educational event. An environmentalist named McConnell would like to take credit for Earth Day as well, but his announcement of the March 21st Earth Day, was made in November, 1969, well after the educational event planned by Sen. Nelson was underway.
April 22nd was chosen by Senator Nelson simply because it was good date, he thought, to get lots of participation from college students. It had nothing to do with other special dates other than to be before college finals and after spring break and Easter. (from Sen. Nelson's biography, which is quoted in Wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Earth_Day )
Also see the EPA website for more about the history of earth day. http://www.epa.gov/history/topics/earthday/index.htm
According to the Hershey website, they make 80 million kisses per day, not 20 million. http://www.hersheys.com/kisses/about/index.asp?contentid=3
17Recycling is dumb dont do it you environmentalist r-tards
