When my friend found out that I was going to be covering wedding cakes this week, she immediately asked for help in finding a fantastic cupcake wedding cake. A few years ago I might have had a difficult time finding a bakery willing to do this, but these days it's a snap. Cupcakes have become so popular — what's not to love about a precious mini cake?! — that most bakeries will be able to present it as an option.
The cupcake wedding cake is usually in lieu of a regular wedding cake, however sometimes a traditional cake is used for photos and the cupcakes are used for serving. In a true cupcake wedding cake, there's usually at least one cake tier (or separate cake) that is used for the bride & groom to slice through. Also, a cupcake wedding cake is usually a cheaper option than a traditional cake, and since there are so many little cakes, you can actually have a lot of different flavors!
These cakes came from (left to right) Beautiful Cakes and Bridals (based in Rochester, MN), Butterfly Cakes (outside of San Francisco, CA) and the famous Cupcake Royale (in Seattle).

I *love* the idea of cupcakes. They're adorable, they're already "sliced," and you don't necessarily need a plate to eat one. I think it's a great (and more laid-back) alternative to the formal cake.
1Oh and I forgot to mention; they can be just as chic and grown up as their larger counterpart.
2I always thought this was such a cute idea, but there was something about just having cake that appealed to me in the end. Girl's gotta have a little tradition!
3Those look sooo good! I LOVE the idea of a cupcake wedding cake. Very different and cute! LOVE it!!
4One of my two BFFs wants to do this. I think she is looking to do something like the one from Butterfly Cakes.
5I love the idea of a cupcake wedding cake. I've always thought it was a good idea. I'm glad it's becoming popular, so when my time comes I'll easily be able to find a place to help me out!
I've been to cupcake Royale in Seattle, they are great!
6This would be very cute for a more casual wedding... although apparently it is already going out of style, so don't wait too long to get married, Mon715.
I've never been to a wedding with a cupcake cake in lieu of a traditional wedding cake, but
instead of a candy bar, a friend of mine had a cupcake bar at the end with loads of different flavors, and everyone got a box with 4 spots and got to take 4 cupcakes home with them.
7i recently attended a wedding that had one of these and it was nice because it guaranteed that every guest would get one rather than trying to slice enough cake for everyone.
8I still want a traditional 3-tiered cake for my wedding, but maybe I'll use this idea for an engagement party or something. Cupcake cakes are hot this year.
9I love the cupcake idea! They look so cute!

these are just too gorgeous!!
absolutely adore this idea. now i know what i want to do for my 21st!
11the frosting gives them the perfect touch!
12love their design
Man I love the idea of having a party with cub cakes! It's delicious..something we don't really do here in UK. We have tea and scones. But it would be good to have latte and cup cake.
13OMG!!!!!look at those cuttie little cakes...Im starving.......I can eat all of them! I really wanna eat something now...
14I am doing a cupcake cake at a bridal shower that I am throwing...it makes it so easy on the host. Plus the guests can take dessert whenever they want. Just beware at weddings...guests might start grabbing before the cake is cut!!
15I'd never heard of this cupcake idea but I love it! I wouldn't make it my main cake but it'd be great to have. I checked out Cupcake Royales site and it's very cute, definately recommend everyone check it out and pick up some of the cute merch!
16Love the idea - certainly though as with any other lots of TASTING should be involved. Since the cupcake revolution began, lots of new companies have come out. Although Cupcake Royale makes a good frosting, the cakes themselves aren't that great. A little dry and crumbly. I've found at least 3 local cupcakeries here that are much better...alas a girl will just have to taste them all!
17I am totally going this route when I get married! That's what I look forward to, wearing an awesome dress and eating
18scrump-didli-umptious cupcakes!!!
I think that is a good idea....saves money...
19I soooo wanted to have cupcakes when my husband and I married a year ago. However, since my future mom-in-law (a retired professional cake artist) was making the cake and now has arthitis, I wanted to be reasonable and not cause her a lot of pain. Decorating 175-200 cupcakes would have been asking way too much of her and besides, I wanted her to still have nice thoughts of me after the wedding.
Nothing kills nice opinions like cramped hands!
I would gladly have helped decorate but lacking all artistic ability, I settled for baking
the cake tiers while she affixed the "squiggly lace" looking decoration.
20All the bakers I talked to in my area said no to the cupcake thing or else asked for a much higher price to do it, I went through 3 bakers before I finally found on, but I didn't even mention cupcakes for fear I might lose another baker. I wanted cupcakes so much I almost made my own cupcake wedding cake but thought against this. My cake was still very elegant and beautiful, and yummy.
21I will be making my own cupcake wedding display. I am frugal, and my husband loves cupcakes. I wanted to share with people an idea for a stand to hold around 100 reg cupcakes. I went to a glass shop and got a quote for: 18", 16", 14", 12", 10", 8", and 6" round 1/8" thick glass cut with polished edges. I was quoted just under 27.00, that is great! Next I went to our local hobby store and bought crystal candle sticks for $1.00 a piece after the sale. All I have to do is assemble and glue. It will be inexpensive and elegant. I saw some on ebay for about $70.00 to hold the amount I wanted and that was plastic. I figure it will be 50.00 or less to make my own cupcakes and frosting, I did invest in a 20.00 frosting gun (this price was not figured into the cake materials). I also plan to use 10" doilys trimmed down to wrap around the cupcake. I have seen some you can buy for 1.00 each wrapper, mine will be .10 each.
22I am having cupcakes for my wedding. They will be on stands that hold 10 or 12 (can't remember) as centerpieces for my tables of 8 people (so there will be extra--cool.) Not only will they be pretty, but they will save me money on a bakery cake, floral centerpieces, and my guests can eat their wedding cake whenever they want. For tradition's sake, and to hold my adorable custom wii cake topper (from Paul Pape designs--google him), I got a giant cupcake pan to create a large "cupcake" for the head table. So we can have our cake cutting, I get to have an adorable topper, & everyone gets to have cake/cupcakes. Win. Win. Win.
