Now that we've got the wedding cake talk out of the way, I thought we'd talk about groom's cakes - what it is, if you need one, and if so what should you get?
First of all, a groom's cake is just a smaller (and usually whimsical) cake meant to reflect the groom's interests, hobbies, profession, etc. It can be served at the wedding, during the rehearsal dinner, or even at the engagement party (although that's more rare). However it was traditionally meant to be sliced and boxed for unmarried girls to take home and place under their pillows (you know, so they could dream about their groom to be), but we'll have none of that these days. These days we just need a tasty fun cake - although, since the wedding cake is our main wedding night cake treat, we might box it up to take home anyway...
Do you need a groom's cake? Nope. Most people won't even notice it's missing and it's a great place to cut costs. Besides since wedding cakes no longer have to be white and boring, you can let your creativity show there.
Will you want a groom's cake? Possibly, and if money isn't an option, most definitely. It's a fun way to show off the groom's personality (sorry ladies, but you know you made the rest of the wedding decisions) and many people love the way they look. I talked to Susan Morgan of the delectable Elegant Cheese Cakes (who made all the cakes shown here) and this is what she had to say:
"Watch out, [The groom's cake] will steal the show with creativity and flashes. I have heard that at many weddings where we have created the cake and groom's cakes, people will line up their pictures taken with the groom's cakes."
Ultimately it's up to you, but after taking a look at these great cakes, how could you not want one?

Bloody Hell..Isn't wedding stressful enough, LOL.
1I'm kidding yum
2we had a groom's cake and it was nice. my husband loves yellow cake with chocolate frosting. he also loves books. so we had a sheet cake that looked like a book with the yellow cake and chocolate frosting. he picked out a latin phrase (he is a geek:)that was iced onto the pages that translated into something sweet (something like "let us live and let us love, lisa"). it was not much more to get that cake and we did not have to make an extra sheet cake in order to feed everyone. and he felt good that he got something that was very "him" (which can often be overlooked during the wedding process).
3I love the idea of a groom's cake. Hopefully we'll be able to get our act together enough to have one. You never know though...it's all so overwhelming.
4Haha. remember the groom's cake from Steel Magnolias? That big grey Armadilla with 'blood red' cake (red velvet) hahaha. too funny.

Why don't you wear the face you have when I am not around?
One of my most favorite groom's cakes was for our family's best friend's son. It really fit both of them though, as it was of the Lighthouse on Hilton Head Island where he proposed. It was beautiful and tasty! I thought that was a fabulous idea for a cake at the rehearsal dinner.
6I got a groom's cake for my hubby! It was Air Force, and totally cute. I got into it more than the hubby even cared though. It's not the most important thing I don't think.
7cool creations!
8didnt know they made stuff like these for the groom
I haven't even heard of these before! I don't think it is necessary but they sound like fun and it would be a good way to give props to the groom. The golf/Xbox one is totally my bf!
9I think it's really more of a Southern thing. I've only ever seen them at weddings in the South or where the bride or groom is a transplated Southerner.
I'm all into two pieces of cake at the reception though.
10My hubby's grooms cake was a couple walking down a path and he has a HUGE cake ball chained to his leg. They piped Good Luck Joey on the cake. It was CUTE. My cake didn't have a topper. His did! I have to post pics in my blog. It was CUTE!!!
11This is definitely a Southern thing! You almost can't have a wedding in the South without a groom's cake. In my experience, however, groom's cakes are usually fairly simple - like a chocolate cake to contrast with your (vanilla) wedding cake. I like the ones in the pictures, though! Kind of reminds me of the armadillo cake in "Bridget Jones Diary!"

We're in the North East and I got my hubby a groom's cake (in the shape of an XBOX, since we are both big gamers). It was served at our Rehearsal Dinner and not only did he flip over it but our guest's loved it too.
14That is really cool thirtyo!
15That's awesome thirtyo! I think the whole idea is cute!
16Thanks. And it tasted good too :9
17cravinsugar: I always think of that cake from "Steal Magnolias"! LOVED that. So funny!
18yumsugar: I'm SO lovin' that coach and tv cake! cutie!
i love these. IMO the bride always shines during the wedding/planning etcetc. so theres no harm sharing a little of the spotlight with the groom
