Teens Not Sleeping Enough Because of Their Gadgets

This is definitely one of those studies that doesn't surprise me. An Australian study has shown that over 50 percent of third- and fourth-year high-school students aren't getting enough sleep because they are too busy playing games, watching TV, listening to their iPod, or chatting on the phone.

It was the males who were found glued to their video games, TVs, or media players, while the females couldn't get enough gab time in on their telephones. What's happening is the teens can't seem to pull themselves away from gadgets before bedtime, which is causing them to lose large amounts of sleep.

Dr. Kurt Lushington, a professor within the School of Psychology at the University of South Australia, who lead the study had this to say about it: "Sleep is very important for learning and memory, particularly in year 12 when pressure is on to perform. A lot of kids are reporting that they're tired when they wake up and there are quite a few reporting they're sleepy during the day."

It'd be interesting if they conducted a similar study for adults. I may not be chatting on my cell before bed, but I am trying to catch up on my TiVo taped shows!

Im guilty of losing sleep cause i cant pull away from my gadgets too. If its not the laptop, its the mp3 player, and if its not the player its the ds, and if its not the ds its the television. There are endless things to do! Guess we can all sleep when we're dead, which may come sooner than we think

Well yeah, but have you considered that the insane amounts of homework we get might be contributing too? I dare you to go find a teenager that says they never wake up tired on school days. It just doesn't happen. I will admit that my laptop doesn't help...

I agree, BellaEdward4ever. I'm a senior in high school, and I balance my schoolwork with a part time job that typically averages about 30 hours per week. It's usually well past 8:00 pm before I start on my homework, and I've got to confess that my study time is not without (more than) its fair share of procrastination and distraction. To be honest, I can't remember the last time that I went to bed (on purpose) prior to 1:00 am . . . the only thing keeping me going is copious amounts of caffeine.

When I was a teen, I stayed up late reading books. This isn't anything new or different.

I try to keep my bedroom as free of electronic devices as possible. When I had my computer in my bedroom a long time ago, I would get up late at night to check email, IM, etc. Consequently, I would be supertired in the morning. I also keep my cell phone downstairs now; if it's really important, my friends should just use the landline. I'm what you might call a light sleeper, so it's important for me to "unplug," as they say. But sometimes I'll be up late anyways, reading a really good book.

I listen to music or check my favorite blogs on my Blackberry before I go to sleep.

Haha! I, on the other hand, CAN'T sleep without them! ..Well, my iPod at least. It helps blocks the noise and thoughts out. Sticking out tongue ha.
