Green tea frozen yogurt may be cool, but the war between frozen yogurt chains Red Mango and Pinkberry is heating up. Only weeks after Pinkberry hired branding firm Bulldog Drummond, archrival Red Mango has cut a seven-figure deal with the Richards Group ad agency.
In the past two years, a new kind of frozen yogurt has exploded in major American cities by way of Asia. The tart, icy treat with fruit, mochi, and cereal-flake toppings quickly gained a cult following. As a result, copycat chains have sprung up across regions like Southern California and Florida, bearing similar brand names like Blue Mango, Diet Berry, and Peachberry.
Red Mango wants to respond by giving its gluten-free, certified kosher, high active-culture count yogurt an extra edge. "There are so many copycats out there. We wanted to educate customers on why Red Mango is different," the company's USA president, Dan Kim, said. He wants Red Mango to be the Starbucks of the frozen yogurt world.
Have you tried the "new" style of tart frozen yogurt? What do you think of it? Do you have a preference in brands? With aggressive branding and advertisements, which company do you think will come out ahead?

I LOVE PINKBERRY! It is really really hard for me to walk by pinkberry every day and not go in. I try to limit to once a week. I love the original flavor topped with strawberries, pineapples, and kiwi. It's low in calories and delicious! The only drawback is that it's expensive.
1There is a new place in Glendale called Twinkles that sells 18 different flavors of yogurt and it's sold by the oz. You can go topping crazy.
2I love Red Mango. It tastes like real yogurt - tart, not ice creamy.
3cocochic, we have one like that in oc but it's called yogurtland. mmm, yummy. just had one today!
4btw, I've never heard of red mango but I love pinkberry as well. it's just really expensive! I'd rather have a combo at carl's jr. lol.
5but to answer the question, I think pinkberry will win just because more people have heard of it and they were featured in that american express business card commercial.
I love Pinkberry, I think they'll come out on top in this war.
6Yes, I've tried it. It has too much sugar for my taste.
I rather have my homemade non-fat yogurt cheese topped with fresh fruit.
7I love pinkberry but I rarely get it because it's too expensive. Pinkberry was my first frozen yogurt experience. I tried Red mango recently and didn't like it at all. Red mango taste more like ice cream because it's creamier. I love the tart flavor of pinkberry!
8I've never heard of either brand. We don't usually get the cool stuff until much later. I'll keep my eyes open, though. Sounds delicious!
9The one by my house is called Red Cherry...random.
10The smell of pinkberry makes me gag..... It's a fad like boba..
11the one by my house is called applegreen haha. YUM though. had some the other day!
12Just tried Red mango for the first time and it was yummy, but never tried Pinkberry so couldn't say one was better then the other - can tell you that I love Yogen Fruz because they actually blend the Fruit into the yogurt so you have a fruit flavored frozen yogurt, not just plain with the fruit topping - a nice twist!
13Pinkberry is seriously like a drug. Wonder what kind of addictive additives are floating around in there...
Sad it hasn't come to NorCal just yet.
14I have to tell you, I've never had any of these before, but have heard of Pinkberry - so, I just tried to go the website to see what the deal was and my work internet blocks www.pinkberry.com because they consider it to be "sexual advice"...would love to meet the person who creates these categories and then decides how various web addresses get put into them
15it's really interesting how this category can really get vicious so quickly. there's a RED MANGO right by my office and i can't say that i've gone there yet but i've heard great things. most people don't know about the store though but they all do know about PINKBERRY since so many celebs have gone there on reality shows and are photographed there.
16I stumbled upon Red Mango while in Hawaii last month, and absolutely fell in LOVE! Soooo good! I wish there was one near me!
17Isn't it Starbucks that invested in Pinkberry already? And I have already seen Pinkberry flavored drinks at Starbucks. Besides, they might merge one day and call themselves Redberry.
18Menchies is a new place and sells by weight (so you can either pay 2 bucks or 20 bucks).....plus they have many more flavor options and topping options too!...... It is the best new place (fad).... I used to love Maggie Moo's but they are it all few and far between. Menchies is growing slowly..... and they have both an orange yogurt and one that is already like a 50/50 bar....
