After 94 years, cookie company Mother's Cookies has closed its doors.
The Michigan-based company, which filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy on Monday, told its workers last Friday that cookies would no longer be made as of Monday.
The reason cited was the economic climate. Chief Restructuring Officer Jeffrey Granger explained that the company has been "operating at a loss due largely to the significant increases in raw material costs and the record high fuel costs across the country."
I'm saddened by the collapse of another company and more job loss, but the hardest part is the sudden parting I have to make with iconic cookies such as circus animals and taffy sandwiches. And there will be no holiday frosted cookies for us this season, either.
Are you surprised to hear of this? What Mother's cookies will you miss?

I have always loved their Circus Animal cookies . . . every year when I was growing up we got my mom a bag of them for Mothers Day and she would eat them sitting out in our backyard by the pool . . . Haven't done it in years, but every time I saw the bag in the store, it made me think about how nice those days were
My other favorites of theirs are the sugar cookies. Man. Now I have to go and stock up on
their cookies!
1I LOVED those iced animal cookies! Haven't had then in like 15yrs but I still remember their yumminess. I feel really sad for the employees.
2AW MAN! I'm going to buy a few packs today!!!!!
I'm going to miss these so much. They were my favorite cookies growing up!
3I loooooooooove those frosted animal cookies.
4I absolutely hated those frosted animal cookies. And I hate them now. I'm hardly upset by them not being made anymore. Hoozah!
5Noooooo!! I'm going to miss the Circus Animals and especially the Taffy cookies.
6Aw...how sad, after 94 years. The animal cookies were pretty good and my mom loves the English Tea ones.
7Oh how sad! I love those frosted animal cookies, especially the Christmas ones!
8NOOOO! I rarely eat them, but have nothing but fond memories of those little pink and white gems.
9For some reason, I loooove their lil chocolate chip cookies. When I lived in NYC and would come back for visits, I would buy a bag to bring back. My friend used to tease me because she said it's what her mom would buy because Chips Ahoy were too expensive.
10Oh man! I sure will miss those circus animals.
11Oh no!! I love their frosted animal cookies!!
12The circus animal cookies are one of my absolute favorites. I am so sad. Granted I have only picked up a bag a couple of times in the past several years...but I don't treat myself often (as you can see). I had better go grab a bag tonight. Now I know how my friend felt when Postum was dropped from production.
13SAD!
14Sad! They make the best frosted animal cookies!
15I will miss those frosted cookies...
16Oh no! Boo hoo, I loved those cookies!
17I will miss the Circus Animal cookies and the Taffy cookies (so GOOD with a cup of coffee)!
I'm really sad to hear about this. So many great companies are getting pulled down by this economic meltdown. Maybe someone can buy the Mother's recipes and bring them back?
18Oh no! Taffy cookies were a huge part of my childhood, we always took them on car trips. Every time I eat one, it reminds me of going to California to visit my aunts and granny. I have to go stock up now!
19
20I am going to have to go to the store and stock up! that is so sad. I love the circus animals, the taffy sandwiches and the iced oatmeal. So so sad
21OMG, this is really sad. I haven't eaten their cookies in years (allergies), but I loved knowing that they were still around.
22i don't think that i've ever heard of mother's cookies in the areas that i've lived but i think that it's a shame that the times are causing things like this to happen. it's like with the whole mrs. fields thing that's going on - it's soo hard on companies that we've grown up with to see them shut their doors because of the economy.
23Oh man, I will miss the circus animal cookies.
24I am soooo sad! I'm pregnant and have literally had major cravings for the frosted Circus Animal cookies. I can't believe it - this is really sad since so many of us grew up with these cookies. How very unfortunate
25OH NO!! I am truly sad to see them shutting down. I have enjoyed their cookies for many years.
My faves are the frosted animal cookies and the assortment bag.
Guess I will have to stock up on them now
26Sadness!! I love the Circus Animal cookies!
27Officially in mourning, I am. My faves were the iced oatmeal and the circus animals, it's like a piece of my childhood has died.
Dig around on Etsy or google, a company called ClothMoth has a cool circus animal cookie t-shirt that might make you efel a bit better, or perhaps worse, depending on your need for nostalgia.
28NOOOOOOOOOOOOO! I buy Mother's Cookies all the time, my two daughters love them! The assortment bag is the best, I like the chocolate ones! The frosted animal cookies are wonderful! My husband likes the Taffy cookies. My favorites are the Gauchos, peanut butter! YUM! I'm going to the grocery store in a few minutes to pick some up!!!
29Oh no! I will stop and get some Animal Circus and Taffy today after work.
30Noooooo! I love Mother's Cookies! I have so many fond memories with them. I loved getting the bags of cookies and partake in cookie movie nights with my friends. man the frosted oatmeal cookie is one of my faves.
Petsugar, i absolutely love the chocolate chips as well. they're my favorite to just dunk in milk and crumble...
i definetly have to stock up on them!
sad for the people who lost their jobs as well.
31mannnnnnnn i was watching channel 7 when they announced this. i was shocked! my favorite was definitely the animal cookies! there's nothing else that tastes like it
32This is very sad, we'll have to stock up on some frosted animal cookies and those delicious toffee cookies. Sigh.
33What is the emoticon for "temper tantrum" with stomping of feet and banging of fists on the floor?? In the immortal words of my 18-month-old niece: "no, no, no...bad, bad!" Now I must make a cookie run to the store and buy a case of Circus Animals and English Tea cookies to stash in the freezer. My darling husband is not going to understand my need to hoard these sugar-overload-causing treasures! LOL
However, I am grateful for the heads-up
because I would have had a small crisis if they had simply disappeared from the shelves. (Yes, I am a mature adult....most of the time, unless it involves cookies)
34This is way too sad. I'm going to need to buy some circus animals and frosted oatmeal. And to think that my son will grow up not knowing the pleasure of pink and white frosted animal cookies is even sadder.
35Well sh*t
36I bet their animal cookies are sold out by now!
37It's been a few days now, and I'm still pretty bummed about this news. I adore the Circus Animals and am savoring my last bag (I don't have much faith in the way the ones I froze will taste when I decide to pull them out of the freezer!)
38I read the article on another website on the 9th or 10th and yelled "oh no!" and told my husband "I have to go and buy cookies." I told him Mothers Cookies was shutting down and he said, go buy cookies. Yep, there are now a few bags sitting on my kitchen counter waiting to make the trip to the freezer.
39what?? i read this just now? noooo.... i love the chocolate chip cookies.
40It sadden my soul when I came home from Iraq and the first thing I wanted was a glass of cold ice milk and Mother's Taffy sandwiches. You can't imagine having to carry on a craving that will never be satisfied. It hurts me even more to know they will no longer be made WHAT DO I DO NOW?
41Mother's Taffy Cookies were my mom's favorite, store-bought cookie, may favorite, too, and also loved by my grandchildren. I'm so sorry to hear that Mother's Cookie Company has become another victim of this dismal economy.
42Thank you, Kellogg's,for carrying on with these classic treats.
I COOKIE STEVE once took a tour through the Mother Cookie factory in Oakland, CA. I miss the smell of cookie in the air in my neighborhood. I, Cookie Steve would like to buy that factory and put the smell of Cookie once again back in the neigborhood and throngh out the world. Thank you Mother Cookie. $$$$$$
