Celebrity Farmers: The Next Big Thing?

These days, it seems anything can make you a celebrity. We have celebrity artists, celebrity socialites, celebrity reality TV contestants, and, of course, celebrity chefs. So could celebrity farmers be far off?

In a recent James Beard Foundation writeup on the notion, Top Chef executive producer Shauna Minoprio was quoted as saying, "Celebrity farmers? It's a fabulous idea. I am 100 percent for it. I don't think it would take much work to interest people in a television series about farmers."

Here in the Bay Area, I constantly see farm names thrown around like designer labels on menus, like "Niman Ranch pork chop" or "Marin Roots Farm chicory." While it's true that San Francisco is the epicenter of the eating local movement, I know that the spotlight on farms has spread to certain parts of the country. Do you think this concept has the potential to catch on?

Jason Mraz has an avocado farm. And Tom Selleck ( I think) has a Meyer lemon farm. It's done, they should just get the ones who do already...

well i'm not sure that it's going to catch on to the same extent that chefs have since that's something that just about anyone can experience, but i think that there's something to be said for promoting their skills and accomplishments. for myself, i don't have any means to grow a farm or even a couple herbs/veggies but at my mom's house she can and i think that if we can take the lead from 'celebrity farmers' to know what they are doing and how they do it to be really successful, then perhaps there's hope. isn't there talk about how they want the white house to have a little veggie garden? that's just the right time to make this more prominent - have some celeb farmer come in and set it all up and see what happens. the next thing we'll see is that celebs are buying homes with more grass so they can do it and then we'll see a reduction in the need to reach out to other countries for our produce since it'll all be locally grown.
