Yesterday the world's best competitive eaters met at a pizza eating competition in New York City's Time Square. Joey Chestnut, the nation's champion in hot dog and hamburger eating, broke the record with an amazing 45 slices in ten minutes at the Famous Famiglia pizza eating competition. Pat "Deep Dish" Bertoletti was Chestnut's closest opponent — he ate 43 slices in the quick ten minutes.
Chestnut folded the regular cheese slices before launching them into his stomach. He washed the pizza down with water in paper cups and "never appeared to chew." After winning the pizza-eating contest, Chestnut is certainly the current star of Major League Eating. Although I find the whole thing pretty disgusting, I'm excited to see what other records Chestnut miraculously beats.

Yuck. His poor digestive system. I can't imagine what his poor body has to go through to regulate his blood sugar from 43 slices of pizza.
Truthfully, I don't get it. But it's his choice to participate in this competition.
1What his body has to go through is what makes him an athlete. Joey Chestnut is absolutely amazing to watch. The human body may not be designed to eat 43 slices of pizza, but it's also not designed to withstand the up to 9 g's that military aviators train to handle. I think both of those attempts to push human tolerance are incredible.
A lot of people will likely criticize him for wasting food. I, personally, am much more critical of Nascar for wasting both petroleum and rubber.

3i watched something on MTV 'True Life' a while back about competitive eaters and there's a LOT that they have to go through in order to be able to do what they do so i commend them, and this is really impressive. not something that i would ever want to do mind you - but it's kind of impressive. it's like a car accident, you know that it's not a good thing, but you can't help but watch and be fascinated.

9A friend of mine is a competitive eater, actually ranked in the IFOCE (not high, mind you), and I saw him compete in a deep-dish pizza eating competition almost 2 years ago. It was amazing and horrifying to watch all at the same time. The guy is like 6'5" and maybe 200 lbs of pure muscle, and watching him put away a whole deep dish pizza... I mean, wow.
