Shiso
An herb related to mint and basil that is commonly found in Japanese cuisine, with an aroma of cinnamon, anise, basil, and citrus.
Shiso, much like parsley in America, is used in salads, sushi, sashimi, cooked dishes, and as a garnish. It also goes by the names perilla and Japanese basil.

mmmmm red snapper, shiso leaf and sea salts is one of my favs!
1At one of my favorite sushi restaurants in New York, I recently had a spicy blue crab roll with shiso leaf tucked inside of it...as well as tempura-battered shiso leaf. A-mazing!
2Sometimes when I get Chinese I bite into some kind of herb and it makes me wretch. It's so gross. From your description, I may have found my culprit.
3Sounds really good, even with the addition of anise.
4foxie, it's odd to find shiso in Chinese food. Might you be biting into cilantro? It makes me retch as well.
5Oh, dang. Yeah cilantro might be it. I don't know how to describe the taste.. it's so weird. VERY strong.
6they're so good!
7For those that have a particular gene, cilantro tastes quite a bit like soap. I think it tastes like SUCKAGE. Soapy suckage.
8i've heard of this so many times, but i've never thought to ask what it was. i like that it's got a bit of a mix of flavors and i think that if i can find it in a store around me here in the city - i'll try to make a dish with it.
9I really like sisho. I want to cultivate it. Somebody knows what climate does it need?
