Professional chefs get help from their sous chefs, the second in command.
But many home cooks I know also have a go-to kitchen assistant to do the rinsing, chopping, and other prep. It's often a spouse, a kid, or a friend.
How about you?

My daughter or husband sometimes act as sous chef, as to various family members on special occasions when I'm cooking. I actually don't mind prep, as to me its all part of "cooking magic" as my daughter calls it. Its the clean up that makes me nuts, so having some extra hands for that is a bonus!
I usually do all of the cooking just because I enjoy it, but occasionally I'll have my BF stir for a minute or something if I'm paying attention to something else. The thing is my kitchen's too small for much collaboration anyway.
It depends on the occasion, but my dad and my friends Sonia and Emily always step up to the plate and help me out in the kitchen.
I was a sous chef in the dining hall at college ... it was one of my least favorite things to do ... so I like having someone else do the prep work for me. I tend to create really elaborate meals, so it's great when there is someone else helping me so I can concentrate more on making a great meal and not on how to dice the onion perfectly.
I HAVE to be alone in the kitchen. I cant stand someone else being there!
I don't have one --- it would be nice, but it would have to be someone who doesn't mind getting yelled at, rolled eyes at, etc. I don't like interference while cooking.
I have tried to train my cat to chop the veggies, but he just refuses to cooperate!
My boyfriend does the cooking and I am his sous chef. I kind of dislike cooking a lot.
My fiance acts as my sous chef if I need a hand. It's fun to work together in the kitchen!
My boyfriend is an awesome sous chef, he loves it! He asks a lot of questions about what we're doing and really enjoys it, and plus I get to make him to the things I hate, like de-fatting chicken and chopping stinky onions.
i usually cook and bake alone for my family. usually they're not home to offer assistance. i try to get dinner ready for them by the time they get back from work or errands.
if my fiancee is with me, he offers to help. when i'm at home, i accept, but if i cook at his kitchen i kick him out because 2 people cannot fit in that tiny hole of a studio apartment kitchen.
It really depends. If it's my dish, then my BF will be my sous chef. If it's his dish, then I'll be his. It's fun!
Nope. If I am really in a jam my husband will do something super easy -- like take something out of the oven when the timer goes off if I am in the middle of something else -- but he refuses to actually help out in terms of prepping anything or doing any actual cooking.
My husband! He does all the little stuff I don't want to do like clean the chicken, or chop the onions ;] I'm actually surprised he's as helpful as he is, because when I was growing up my Dad did not lift a finger in the kitchen.
I AM the sous chef
! My bf LOVES to cook so when he can stand for someone else to be
in the kitchen I try to help with whatever I can!
my fiance and i used to share the responsibility of cooking - so i'm not sure which one of us would be referred to as sous. since i don't eat meat, he did that stuff but i did everything else , and in many ways made the non meat things the feature of the dish.
I'm the sous chef in our house! My fiance is a great cook, and I'm... not so great.
We have fun doing it.
My boyfriend and i take turns being each other's sous chef... we love being in the kitchen and cooking together!
My boyfriend! I make him call me Chef. It's cute.
My girlfriend and I prep for each other. It depends on which one of us is the non-gender-specific monarch of the kitchen for the evening.
I am the sous chef! My husband cooks and I chop and drink wine. It works well.
The fiance. He's an excellent bus boy/dishwasher as well (without being asked!). Helps that his parents used to own a pizza place; it was excellent training.
I am my mom's sous chef. I enjoy helping her in the kitchen. It's a great opportunity for us to bond and for me to learn how to cook/bake. & believe me - I need all the help I can get!
my BF is always my sous chef (and we've made that joke a dozen times). he's endlessly curious about how to cook (but since i don't want to be poisoned, he hasn't attempted it solo yet). i really like the help. it lets me pay attention to what i'm cooking, rather than worrying about burning something while i'm chopping something else.
When home I am my mom's sous chef but at my apartment I am the head chef (although when my bf and our roommate grill my bf is head chef and our roommate is his sous chef and watching their antics at the grill always makes me laugh)I am also the head dishwasher, the head maid, etc. lol ah well
My boyfriend!
i only like to cook alone especially if i have no idea what im doing. i dont like some asking me questions or hoovering over my shoulder. when me and my boyfriend cook together i usually let him do everything. hes a control freak.
My four year old acts as my sous chef....it keeps things interesting
If friends come over then one of them usually jumps in. I sometimes ask my husband but he gets flustered easily in the kitchen so I don't take advantage too often.
I am the sous chef! I like the dirty work, like chopping, assembling, plating. Basically the stuff the other person doesn't want to do. I cook for real too, but I love the be a sous and help.
If I'm cooking, then I generally do all of it from prep to plating. But if the bf is cooking, I step in to be his sous chef, though I have to work really hard to not give my "advice" on how he could do something differently/better.
I'm usually the sous chef in my house, but when I cook, my boyfriend and I swap jobs.
My boyfriend and I usually cook together~
