A Warren, MI, pizzeria is exchanging free pizza in return for McCain campaign signs.
"Turn in your sign, get some free food," offers Diana Franzoni, owner of Salvatore's Pizzeria, the restaurant giving away the pizza. Still seething over the fact that McCain pulled out of the battleground state, she contends: "McCain gave up on Michigan, so you should give up on him."
Salvatore's, which has collected hundreds of signs in the past two weeks, has become the center of controversy. The pizza-sign exchange has led to many signs being stolen from supporters' front lawns. "You're putting a bounty on a McCain sign for a pizza," said one supporter whose sign was stolen. The McCain camp has admonished the offer as "wrong," saying that true McCain supporters would not be likely to give up their signs for free pizza.

Um, that pizza looks delish.
And, yeah, how hard would it be to imagine that people would steal signs to get free pizza... unless that's secretly what the owner wanted too.
Not. A. Good. Idea.
It could be fun if you come in wearing an "I voted" sticker you could get free pizza.
1I'm with sy on this one. I can see people stealing them from yards and people going into campaign headquarters and getting signs just to turn them in, which I also think is wrong. There are a limited number of McCain/Palin signs as it is!
Also, that owner's reasoning is just childish.
2Sy, that pizza really does look amazing. And it doesn't help that I haven't had lunch yet. Maybe I'll go steal my neighbor's McCain sign...
3"Is the offer spirited and fun, or reminiscent of a nasty campaign?" Seems to me if you have to ask that question you PROBABLY already know the answer. What a pathetic attempt by these pizza shop owners. Thanks for letting us know who it is too, because I will be CERTAIN never to darken their doorstep if I'm in that area. And I LOVE Pizza!
4Well my only hope is that people will see what a bad idea this is and boycott the place.
5Yum, that pizza does look good. People will steal the signs for the free pizza.
People who get lawn signs are big supporters of their candidates. I can't imagine they would be so easily swayed to trade it in for free pizza.
I'd say most of those lawn signs they've collected are stolen ones. Maybe if the owner put a one person/one sign limit on the offer that might help keep people from stealing signs.
6I think it's hilarious! I'd go steal a couple of signs for some of that pizza, it looks yummy. LOL!
7I love that idea. The fact that people are going for it is so very AWESOME.
8That's just asking for trouble. Sign stealing is a big enough problem without the offer of pizza.
9Anyone else think the owner kinda sounds like Sarah Palin?
10I agree hippie.
11I just want everyone to realize that you have to PAY for those signs. They aren't free or giveaways. I have had two stolen and it really just deepens the partisan divide that is happening in this country. Yes, it is this business owners right to do this. But as all business owners know you have a social responsibility as well.
12GS, you should go to your county's McCain/Plain headquarters. We got ours there for free. But, you had to be there the day they came in. Those things go like hotcakes!
(I'm sure a lot of this depends on what area/state you're in, too. My parents got free signs in Ohio, my roommate and I got free signs in Virginia. I'm guessing the battleground state status helps!)
13It's an icky feeling to know that someone has stolen something from you. It's a hurtful violation, whether you're stealing their car radio or just their election sign. You're scheming and sneaking onto SOMEONE ELSE'S property and taking something they obviously care about and took the time to obtain. It's rude, distasteful and immature.
14Amen Foxie. And Kim, i'm not putting another one up. I don't want to give them that satisfaction. But thanks for the tip!
15People! Put your signs inside the windows of your homes! Then you're still advertising the candidate you support without having your stuff stolen.
It doesn't matter what candidates or initiatives you support, it's something we all have a right to promote in this country. And I'm saying that as a pretty adamant Obama supporter. While the pizza parlour owner has a right to hold that promotion in her business, it's pretty lame that people would steal signs as a result. I really hope that wasn't her intent.
16That seems like a good idea, but rocks are being thrown through the windows of the people who did that.
17That also only works if your house is visible from the street. My parents, who live on 2.5 wooded acres, don't have that option.
(They are in a super-Republican area, so they don't have to worry about their McCain sign being stolen, but still.)
Also, nothing against you, Deidre, but I hate when people blame the victims of any crime, no matter how small or insignificant the crime may seem.
18I live in Texas, so I was surprised by the thefts.
19Maybe someone stole your sign who couldn't afford one of their own or didn't want to buy one. They may be sporting your sign in their yard.
20I wish, but the fact that you see them destroyed on the street all through the neighborhoods leads me to believe that isn't the case.
21I love pizza, but this is ridiculous! It just takes the integrity out of voting. Shame on Salvatore's for imposing their beliefs on others and bribing people with free pizza if they vote for a particular candidate. What happened to people using their own voices and voting for whom they think is the best person for the job?
22Wow...I completely misuread the article. I feel sheepish. Hang on.....
My new take: I still think this is ridiculous. What's wrong with rewarding voters with free pizza instead? Salvatore's should take a tip from Ben and Jerry's on that
23Yes thats what Syako said. I agree. I would much rather they give free pizza to the people who come in with the I Voted sticker.
24I think this was more for free advertising then for being mad at McCain.
25zeze, and look it WORKED! Only trouble is, I don't think they'll be getting much business from conservatives after this. LOL
26i think that it's a bit extreme to say that mcain gave up on the state. you have to realize that there are campaign analysts who have the job to determine where to spend $$ and make appearances this late in the game, and i think that he did what he felt he had to. i hope that people realize that. i do have to say though that it's kind of cool to get free food for a sign. seeing as how i'm so poor right now - i think that i would do that even though i don't usually eat pizza.
27So wrong on so many levels. Stealing is stealing. I shouldn't have to put my sign in my window so it doesn't get stolen. Maybe I should invent some sort of invisible fence for humans
28Sign-stealing is awful no matter which candidate you support - it goes against the whole idea of America - free speech and all that. Everyone should have the right to support the candidate of their choice without fear of retribution from their neighbors. I'm sure both candidates would be horrified to know that their supporters are throwing rocks at the houses of the other candidate's supporters or stealing their signs. It's so nasty and divisive, it's just making this election that much uglier. Don't they realize that we all have to come together as one nation at the end of this? That pizzaria has to realize that someone who had the dedication enough to buy a sign wouldn't turn it in for a free slice of pizza, and that therefore the signs they're getting must be stolen. That's low.
29They're encouraging people to steal. Those signs cost money! If I were a McCain supporter with a sign in that area, I would mark something on the back, and if it got stolen, pay a little visit to the restaurant to see if they have it.
30LOL. That is too funny. Some one stole my Obama sign, so I might as well get free pizza for stealing a McCain sign in return
But no, really I wouldn't steal any one's sign. I am annoyed that my car was egged the same night my Obama sign was stolen, I wonder if that was just a coincidence?
The whole sign stealing, beating people up, and vandalism is really stupid, and makes America look like a bunch of idiots. What happened to free speach?
31That's funny! But I would hope that people don't steal signs of others to get the free pizza.
