I've never liked the taste of mulled wine - perhaps I love red wine too much to mess with the taste quite so much. My spiking of choice for the cider is Pimm's #3 cup (made with brandy, as
opposed to Pimm's #1, which is gin-based). It's not available in the US but I had a friend traveling to the UK bring some back for me. It tastes of clove, citrus, and a variety of other
spices, and works amazingly well heated in cider. Pimm's #3 was phased out but has returned as the seasonal "Pimm's Winter". It is, however, still unavailable in the United States, which is
quite the tragedy.
Everyone, at some point in their life, should travel to Germany around Christmas time for the Weihnachtsmarkt (Christmas Market) and Glühwein (Mulled Wine) that will undoubtedly be available.
God I miss Germany.
My FI proposed to me last year on our trip to Brussels at their Christmas Market...they served warm spiced wines and spiked cocoas in the streets with chocolate dipped waffles. It was
amazing.
Just mulled apple cider sans the booze for me or some hot chocolate though I have
never tried mulled wine I am curious but extremely doubtful I would like it anyways
i've tried mulled wine and it's not my thing, so i think that i'd be more included to have the spiked cider (granted i guess it all depends on what it's spiked with and how much it impacts
the flavor)
A delicious spiked cider after a day of working outside in the wind and rain or finishing a day of apple butter and pumpkin butter making...A yummy mulled wine at the end of a cold and rainy
winter day in front of a gently glowing fire...ahhh, bliss! Although the spiked hot cocoa idea sounds delicious too! I think I'll do that this evening!LOL
My fave spiked cider recipe is to heat 2 parts apple cider to 1 part cranberry juice, then add some spices into a tea ball (cinnamon, nutmeg, cardamom, cloves) and warm. Then add a bit of
spiced rum to taste and enjoy!!

This soup ends up being a good source of three blood pressure-lowering minerals since the milk adds calcium and the potatoes deliver a dose of potassium, as well as magnesium.
I like them both!
1PS - you need a poll option for "both are fine" - I did not vote for that reason.
2I picked cider, but only because I don't know what mulled wine actually is.

I adore Gluhwein, I was lucky enough to find a box of the spices in a German Christmas shop last year, so I'm just waiting for an excuse to make it!
