Many people believe that the difference between stuffing and dressing is how you cook it. If you cook it inside the turkey it's called stuffing; if you cook it outside it's known as dressing. However, it may be a regional thing: apparently in the South it's always called dressing. I've always referred to it as stuffing whether it's cooked inside or outside the bird. What do you make? Do you cook it inside or outside?

I call it stuffing but it is cooked outside of the turkey.
1Yep, we call it stuffing too, but we actually stuff the bird. We also make another type of stuffing that isn't in the bird.
2I live in Ohio, but I've always heard the inside/outside rule for the name.
3I've always called it stuffing no matter where it was cooked.
4Here in Dallas, TX Ive always called it stuffing, and NOT made in the bird! I like cornbread stuffing but NO sausage!
I actually made some last night with some leftover cornbread! And at Thanksgving I skip the turkey and ham and go straight for the stuffing and sweet potatos.
5I open a box of Stove Top Stuffing and follow the directions except I use chicken stock instead of water just the way my mom did.
I've made homemade stuffing and I and my family just prefer the salty box stuff.
6I call it both stuffing and dressing, although I never cook it in the bird.
It's one of my favorite dishes. Everything else can be a wreck, but for my family, the
dressing must be done right.
7The question was asked "stuffing or dressing" but the question *meant* do you cook it inside or outside.
I cook it outside. Whatever you want to call it, I cook it outside.
ps. I call it dressing.
8We cook it on the inside and outside...and when it's done we mix it all up. YUM! We call it stuffing regardless if it's in our out.
9My family background is Texan, and my grandmother always called it "dressing" and it was always made with cornbread. My aunt's family is from Back East and she always made "stuffing" with toasted bread. Either way, the dressing/stuffing is always baked outside the bird because we like the edges "well done".
It is definitely one of our favorite dishes.
10I'm from the South, and it's always called dressing, and it's always cooked outside the turkey!
11We stuff it in the bird and call it stuffing. SO GOOD!
12i'm with mtiger...in the South it's always cooked outside and it's always dressing. mmmm with gravy! gosh i can taste it now! 2 weeks!
13I live in California and we've always called it stuffing, cooked inside or outside of the turkey.
14We call it stuffing and cook it alone - pretty much everyone at the Thanksgiving event doesn't eat turkey!
15BOTH!!!
16I call it dressing & cook it outside of the turkey. I'm Southern, but if we cooked it inside the turkey I'd call it stuffing.
17I cook it inside and call it stuffing, though my mother's family from Central PA calls it dressing. I love stuffing, bread, sausage, onions, celery, celery salt, and butter and it is delicious, deadly, but once a year is ok!
18I call it stuffing, and it is cooked outside of the bird. I like it crispy on top instead of soggy!
19I'm from NE--we cook it outside, but call it stuffing.
20I too have always called it stuffing, regardless of where it was cooked. Which in my house is outside of the turkey..you know, separately. And I live in the South.
21And my mom was born in Michigan and SHE calls it dressing! Maybe we're backwards?
22I do both. As much as I can stuff into the turkey, and then more in a pan.
23We make two sets of dressing - and they both end up gone!
24It's stuffing. We cook it outside the bird, usually Stove Top because it's the only one everyone can agree on! We like the cornbread variety.
25They are both stuffing. I think that in the bird comes out with more flavor and is moister.
26I like cooking whatever's outside the bird with the giblets.
27How about both? My dad always stuffs the bird with a traditional recipe, then he makes a separate batch in a casserole dish with oysters. There is usually joking around every year about someone getting their dressing/stuffing mixed up because no one else eats the kind with oysters.
28We make both, since hungry boys like to eat lots of it.
29I live in North Carolina and it's always been called dressing in my family, however, it's always been cooked outside the turkey so perhaps we're just following a rule;) Cooking the dressing is always my mothers thing so I should ask her.
30I cook it outside and call it stuffing
31I cook it outside and call it stuffing
32i call it stuffing, but i also cook it outside the turkey because i'm a vegetarian and i'm not a fan of eating anything that's been associated with the turkey
33I've never heard of the inside/outside rule. Lived in CA my whole life and I've always heard and called it stuffing no matter where it was cooked. We usually stuff both end of the turkey until ridiculously full and plop the leftover stuffing in a dish to be baked right along side it
yum
34We cook it on the outside, but we call it stuffing. I chose 'dressing' on the poll though because you said it's cooked on the outside. I didn't know what dressing was until my ex-boyfriend's grandmother cooked dressing for us earlier this year.
35Well, we don't eat meat, so, we don't cook it inside of anything, but we've always called it stuffing.
36I live in a box. I only heard of stuffing. Now I know that it can be called dressing too.
37inside or out we always call it stuffing (and cook it outside) in our house and it is always my favorite!!!
38We always call it stuffing, and we always cook it outside the turkey. Always.
39My family actually uses both words stuffing and dressing interchangably. I guess its because we always make it inside and outside.
40Always make it outside the bird and we make cornbread dressing in particular.
41I'd call it stuffing even if it weren't cooked in the bird, but my parents always stuff the bird with stuffing and bake the excess stuffing in a separate dish. So you can see how that would get confusing if they had different names but were in fact the same thing.
42I've always learned that stuffing and dressing are two different things, no matter if they were cooked inside or outside the bird.
My mom and I make stuffing - lots of chunks of different textures (bread, sausage, apples, chestnuts, etc.) and cook half in the bird and half out of it.
My (Southern) grandmother makes dressing - cornbread-based, usually a smoother, more uniform texture that is creamier and less "dry" than stuffing (though our stuffing isn't actually dry).
43Generally I do a bit of both. I don't want to alienate any vegetarians that show up by presenting food that was cooked in a bird.
44Mom makes dressing. Personally can't stand the taste or smell of it.
45either way it is cooked - in GA we call it DRESSING and its so yummy I cannot wait til Thanksgiving Day!
46my family makes both, also oyster stuffing. but i prefer the stove-top stuff, for some reason
47We always call it stuffing.
