Do you remember the Diet 7Up Taste Challenge Kit I told you guys about a few weeks ago? Well mine arrived yesterday, and we decided to put our tastebuds to work immediately. When I opened the box I was greeted with 2 sets of instructions (I think this was a mistake), a coupon for a free 2-liter bottle of Diet 7Up, a can of the new Diet 7Up, a can of Sprite Zero and a ridiculously banged up can of Sierra Mist Free. The instructions said to refrigerate the sodas for at least an hour before tasting, but they arrived ice cold - the same temp as the sodas in the fridge - so we dove straight in. I thought that the Diet 7Up we had in the fridge was different, so I ended up throwing that into the mix as well.
I poured each drink into red party cups labeled A, B, C and D - set them out and let everyone taste. No one knew which was which (except me), so there would be no bias. Out of the ten people who participated, 5 liked A the best, 3 for C and 2 for D. To find out what was in each cup, read more
A was Sprite Zero, B was Sierra Mist and C & D were both Diet 7Up. The study itself was ridiculously flawed - I thought C & D were different types of 7Up, but really they were the same (although oddly, most people thought they tasted different) and the Sierra Mist was flat, flat, flat (that was probably since it arrived all banged up). Overall there was no real winner (although both PartySugar and I liked the Diet 7Up the best), and we learned some interesting things (including the fact that one person said she'd never drink D, only to find out that she drinks it all the time). We also had to wonder why, if given a choice, would you drink a soda with no caffeine and no sugar and very little taste? Why not just drink water or sparkling water instead?
If you didn't order a taste challenge kit in time, you can always set up your own. If you do, let us know what you think.

I can provide some insight into the why drink a drink with no caffeine, and no sugar. I have heart problems and am sugar sensitive and I DO drink A ridiculous amount of water, but anytime a new flavor/drink comes out that matches my needs I'm willing to give it a try!
I'd imagine there are plenty a diabetic, or dieter out there that also have heart issues and would be willing to try this.
Growing up a caffeine free coke addict, then becoming sugar sensitive a couple years ago was a true heartbreaker. Water is good, and good for you, but in my opinion it's nearly as satisfying as pop sometimes, no matter how you sparkle or flavor it!
I'm still laughing over the "I would never drink this" taster! Thanks for the test!
1I love sparkling water but sometimes I just feel like something sweeter but don't want the caffeine or sugar. And another thing I like about Diet 7Up, Sprite Zero, etc. is that they don't stain my teeth as much as Diet Coke and coffee (not that I don't drink a lot of those too).
2The diet 7ups might have tasted different because they changed the formula kind of recently. It was made with Splenda for a while, and now it isn't. Also regular 7up switched to all natural so they might have changed the base formula for diet also. (I work along with a 7up distributer sometimes.)
3Amity - I'm pretty sure they were the same, the packaging was the same and the both have the new "lemonlime" "naturally flavored soda" on them. They're both the new 7up, i thought the one we had was different, but it wasn't, they were almost identical. I personally think it was the power of suggestion, people thought it was different so it "had to be," right?
4I don't drink any of those, but I still found this to be interesting! I'm still laughing over the person who said they'd never drink whatever is in 'D' but really drinks it all the time! haha
5I haven't rec'd mine yet. Maybe tomorrow!
6oookay. here comes some debunking. just the other night i was reading "blink", malcolm gladwell's follow-up to "the tipping point" and he talks about the pepsi challenge and how on the sip test pepsi was ANNIHILATING coke. so pepsi developed it as a marketing campaign. coke freaked out and in response developed "new coke", which in tests beat pepsi by a comfortable margin. of course it was a complete disaster because we don't drink a "sip" of cola/sprite/beer/tequila, we drink a WHOLE can/bottle/flask handed to us by some guy in cabo. and the taste that was making pepsi win (sweeter and something else i don't remember, the book is in the other room and i'm watching the rockets game) was actually off-putting by the time you got to the end of the can. now that we all know the non-relevence of sip-tests, lets talk about how AWESOME those flip video banners are, i wonder what artistic genius did them??
7I gotta laugh at that person who said they'd never drink this as well!
8I am not a pop/soda person but OCASSSIONALLY I will have a craving= and without hesitation will reach for a diet. I do taste a difference between that and regular but I guess I drink it so rarely that I don't mind. And when mixing drinks with pop- at home or at the bar, I opt for diet as well, I just feel guilty about the added unnecessary calories. Personally I am bummed when diet pops DON'T have caffeine in them- that is just a bonus if you ask me
I ordered
the kit when the original post was made so I am excited to get it!
9that's very interesting. on occasion, i enjoy the crisp coolness of a Sprite more than I enjoy sparkling water. sometimes sparkling water (even the flavored kind) tastes too bitter.
10How cool! I am anxiously awaiting my kit!
11Yeah Yum!
12It turns out you didn't just have a taste test, but a little psychology experiment on the side!
i signed up for one, and while i already know sierra mist is my fav, i have been buying the "new" siet 7-up since it has been on sale, 3 for 3.50 plus .55 off each 2-liter with coupons. haha. usually i drink tea or water, but every once in a while I get on this i want soda kick, and since I am dieting and can't have caffeine, clear sodas are for me!
13Very interesting...
14At my boyfriend's parents' house for Mother's Day, all they had to drink for soda was Dt. 7-up. I haven't had it in years since we have always just bought Coke or Pepsi products. I have to say I really enjoyed the taste of the Dt. 7-up and I will probably buy it next time it's on sale! It had a sweet and crisp flavor that didn't leave an aftertaste in my mouth.
15Now I'm pretty thirsty ladies....
