A couple of weekends ago, I attended a deep-fry party at my favorite bar in San Francisco, 15 Romolo. The fiesta was celebrating the inauguration of their new deep fryer and everyone was asked to bring an ingredient to fry. There was a delicious assortment of crispy goodness including Snickers, game hens, cheesecake, bacon (my contribution!), arancini, and crab cakes.
There was also a selection of more outlandish items like fried durian, oranges, squab, and mealworms. Typically used for fishing bait, mealworms are the larvae of a beetle. They are perfectly OK to consume, so being an adventurous eater, I popped a few in my mouth. They tasted earthy, with a chewy texture similar to calamari. If you had been attending the party, do you think you could have stomached them?

1No. I'm pretty damn liberal when it comes to trying new things - I'll put almost anything in my mouth, but one thing I will NOT eat are insects of ANY kind.
2no way. i'd eat them only if i was in some situation like lost on a island and could not find any other food... after 3 days of starving.

5I'm very much a texture eater and anything chewy in the meat family is a no no. No steak, no shrimp, etc. I'm weird, I know.

7Hell no! I'm a big proponent of "I'll try anything once," but apparently I'll try ALMOST anything once. The thought makes me shudder, as does the gross mealworm in that picture.
A regular worm though? I have eaten that (granted, I was only a year old and would probably have put anything in my mouth).
8I would. I eat snails every year so while I would probably freak out a bit, I would try it. People all over the world eat worms, ants and lots of differnt insects. They're not dying because of them so should be fine for me too.
9After a couple of beers, and with a spicy ketchup, sure I'd try this.
10That picture made my stomach roll just looking at it. And while I'm all for trying anything once, this is one thing I would just have to miss out on.

19I actually HAVE eaten fried mealworms and they are pretty good. I thought they kind of tasted a bit like toasted popcorn kernels. They had sort of a grainy flavor (I'm guessing because that's what they were fed their whole lives?) and they were actually pretty good.
20I had a friend growing up who was a bug fanatic! She always used to talk about eating bugs, so one day she made them for a bunch of us (this included mealworms) and we all tried them together. They don't taste like anything, but you have to get paste the fact that you are eating a bug.

22Not only would I not eat them but I would never eat anything out of that fryer again, thanks. Deep fry oil is most often reused over and over so I hope they waited to fry those till the end.
23I love Romolo too! I would try the mealworms. I love anything deep fried except for candy and Twinkies, barf bag please!
24no way no how no can do! aside from the fact that i'm a vegetarian and i won't ever eat a living creature anymore- i think that it's just an awful thought!
25I'm game for pretty much anything, but I used to feed mealworms to my hedgehog. After seeing her eat them (still alive!), there's no way I could eat one.

31god yes id eat them i took a survival course and am now a survival instructor and there not that bad pan fried ones taste a little like pop corn and in halifax nova scotia at the discovery museam they fry them up and you get a chance to eat them and they offer candy with mealworms in them like suckers...etc its not that bad before you say anything you should really try it
